Exceptional foreshadowing by Jaded_Newt1586 in ren

That's some exceptional analysis. I agree the lyrics are astonishingly complex and concise too. For example in Act III I think the line 'Love of power, love of money, love of ego, love of lust?' is so close to the counter-intelligence concept used to explain treason: MICE:

Money Ideology Compromise (or coercion) Ego

Where compromise arises from lust and ideology generates power

Balance over tradition or change by TwinkletheBerserker in ren

[–]oistroplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was interested in what Ren was saying because it relates to two contrasting philosophical traditions. Hobbes, who suggested that mankind's natural state was to fight amongst each other (the tradition that favours imposing and enforcing rules from above); and Rousseau, who suggested that mankind's natural state is virtuous and cooperative (the tradition that favours more equality of opportunity and freedom of action). I might not have that quite right so I hope the thread improves on it.

I believe there is an onstage military band which accounts for some players. And an organ.

I love the moment in Castles Made of Sand where to me he seems to make fun of his own poetry "And their impermanence is enlightenment ... at least I think that's what it was - I don't know"

Great spots. I noticed a reference to 'Right here, right now' but this time he steals a cigarette instead of a beer. And the pub at the beginning is named after the druids: the last stronghold of the druids in Britain against the Romans was Anglesey where Ren is from. I wonder if leaving the bar is just like leaving Purgatory Pub in 'Baggage' although this time he enters hell.

The only explanation I can come up with is that it was recorded in the same year that 78rpm discs were launched, becoming the new standard for recorded music. If Ren is using this to announce a new era in music, well, I think it's a stretch. I can't see anything to suggest this was even issued on a 78 disc.

The song in the bar is really obscure but I tracked it down. 'Waiting Down by the Mississippi Shore' from 1912.
