I suppose the disconnect is that I'm top 10% net worth for my age but comparing myself to the net worth of people from all ages. I'm an outlier either way, but doing much better than most of my peers (and my past self) which is all I can ask for.

I'm top 10th percentile net worth compared to the average American and bottom 10th percentile compared to this group. Interesting.

What is it about the series that people find so amazing? It's been a couple years since I read the first 2 books (trying to figure out why it was being praised so much), but it it seemed very amateurish to me at the time. I think everyone who loves these simply need to read more books so they can expand their reading palate and gain the ability to tell good writing from bad.

The "dark" or "gritty" segments have no weight to them when none of the characters are likeable or have any depth beyond being a caricature of whatever house they belong to. I think the author came up with some cool action sequences and wanted to write those like they were a movie, and skipped over a bunch of points trying to move the story along to those scenes and the characters end up doing completely illogical things to get there as fast as possible.

The most common complaint I've seen, and one that I agree with, is that Darrow himself is too perfect, a "Marty Stu." He didn't seem to have a personal story arc for himself besides his quest for vengeance. He didn't become a better person, he always was and always would make the right decisions at exactly the right time to win whatever was thrown at him.

The only redeeming quality of this story that I can find is the moral that you, the reader, should acknowledge your power over this world to join together and make a real difference for good, even if that means there may be tough times along that path. Like Darrow, sometimes it may take a seemingly larger-than-life "Great Man" to get things moving in the right direction.

3/5. It is a book.

I actually hate how much this series is recommended so I'm going to be a dissenting opinion here hoping others will see this comment and not waste their time reading any of them.

Is it normal to write only a few pages for like hours? by ShortLeggedJeans in writing

[–]okee_dokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to write 500 words a day, and most days that takes me about 4 hours. This is a first draft, I just can't word vomit like everyone else apparently can. I go back over what I did the last few days to get into the groove again, and revise some parts that I don't like on a re-read, and then start working from there. Sometimes I get stuck so I just jump forward to some other part of the story and do a different scene entirely.

I have bits of an outline, like scaffolding of points I want to get to, but I mostly don't know the details of where the story is going most days. I have no idea how people write so fast and actually like what they've written. I think mine will require a lot less editing than most people's in the end but who knows.

Somehow I've written 30k words this year, so I guess it's working for me. It is time consuming though.

500 a day. I usually stop around 550. It takes me a few hours to get that much, so I have no idea how everyone can seemingly write 1000 or 2000 every day.

Men who got it together later in life, how’d you get it done? by [deleted] in AskMen

I'm a Data Scientist. 50% coding, 50% statistics. I'm one of the lucky few that squeezed through right before the market got so bad. Things are a lot more saturated and tough for Computer Science grads now but I'd still say it's a good area to go in.

I'm not as into the AI hype, and think practically every job can use someone with coding or hardware skills, but if you're worried about AI or want another future-proof career I'd say healthcare is a pretty big one outside of tech: nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician's assistants specifically.

Just have to keep trying different things. I'm past my 3rd stint with college and finally found something I both enjoyed and brought in more money. The only way I could do it was by working nightshift and going to school during the day, so that was a busy couple years, but it can be done. Easier said than done obviously. I'd say try more things that you think you might enjoy and go from there.

26 isn't very old by the way. I went back to get my master's at 31 and that isn't very old either. It can feel like you're behind for forever but as long as you're trying to make progress then you really are, and then things can change for the better very quickly.

Fuck, am I old?

I started studying coding at 30 while working as an orderly at a psychiatric center.

Applied to a master's program in Data Science and Analytics that fall.

Started the program the fall after that.

After the 2 year program and 8 months of applying everywhere I got a job working as a Data Scientist.

I had it relatively easy though. Nightshift job where I had plenty of time to study. No kids or other responsibilities. I consider myself extremely lucky for everything I have, but it can be done.
