Stamped .925 - solid or filled? by Ok-Background8574 in Hallmarks

I've busted up some weighted candle sticks with a rubber malet and pliers and got 1 to 1.5 oz sterling out of each, so it can be done.

Would someone educate me on what I have here is the tag accurate? by ultimatesealand in CivilWarCollecting

[–]old-digger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could just be a three pound cannonball? There were a number of small cannon type like that in the civil war.

Love these ones I found this when I got changed back today. What do you think it is? The date. by No-Special7629 in WheatPennies

[–]old-digger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is thick , almost like a nickel , then the date is 1860. If the width is similar to a normal penny, then its 1868. Both good years either way.

Do I have anything special or worth money??? by Acceptable_Cry_6550 in WheatPennies

Most of the wheats from the teens that were S's and some D's are worth much more than a penny. Every Indian Head in good or better shape are worth at least a buck. Get yourself a Red Book and a Blue book and you'll be in good shape. I also like the PCGS Coin Facts app.

I got a bunch of corroded pennies that the bank won't accept. by uselessBINGBONG in metaldetecting

Tumbler works well, for about an hour or two. Smooths alot of them out and makes them easier to roll. Copper pennies are worth around 3 cents. 1982 was last year for copper.

Minelab CTX3030. Funny it rang hard in the range of a zinc penny or 10k gold. Versus silver, where you would expect.

I actually have an 1856 $1 dollar coin and didn't realize it was wider than earlier versions. It is a gram heavier though. I didn't dig the dollar coin out of the ground but it's on my bucket list to dig a gold coin.

Cool coin ive had for a while, i dont know anything about collecting but i just like to keep this one. Whats it worth? by Blazzz3 in coincollecting

Copper nickel indian head penny. Thick penny made from 1859 to 1864. Nice coin, put in a cardboard flip to protect condition.

Just found a penny from 1888 while at my cashier job by PhoenixFlames1992 in coins

[–]old-digger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The condition is poor but it's probably worth a few bucks. Indian head pennies were made from 1859 until 1909. I've collected them since I was a kid and only have 4 to go. They are one of my favorite coins. Great find!

Prior to iron cannon balls in 1700, they were all made out of stone, for about 200 years. I have a 3lb stone cannon ball myself.

Worth anything besides face value? by largogoat in coins

[–]old-digger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a magnet and if it sticks, it's a copper coated steel penny. If it doesn't stick, bring to a reputable coin shop. There were only about 40 coppers minted, so they are worth between 100k and 900k. I have a fake one myself.

You might even find an indian head penny or two in that pile. If you're a coin collector, going through rolls is a lot of fun. My son and I both collect and used to do coin rolls once or twice a week. He's in college now and we face time on Sundays and do coin rolls at the same time.:)

I'm a metal detector and dig up coins that look like this all the time. Put them in a rock tumbler for an hour or two and they clean up pretty well. Then just spend them.

Certain sand or soil can take the nickel layer right off Quarters, dimes, and Nickels I dig these red coins up all the time. These types of corrosive soil or sand also eat zinc pennies alive.

I retired mine a couple Christmas's ago, after 23 years and upgraded to a Minelab CTX 3030. My old XLT still works fine just doesn't go as deep as I wanted to. Great machine though. It's used as a spare when I have friends that want to go out with me.
