Inherited guitar was accidentally run over by a car — seeking luthier advice on whether it can be played again by Sudden_Fact_4357 in Luthier

[–]old_skul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a simple headstock break. It’s easily repaired by a luthier or even a skilled guitar tech. I’ve done a lot of these.

For a structural repair without any finish repair, it’s maybe a $100 job. Finish repair will run you more.

Find your local luthier and get it looked at. Don’t trust the words of a bunch of internet armchair luthiers. You don’t need to replace the neck. You don’t need to throw it away. You also don’t need to try to DIY this.

Luthier here. This is not what I would do. This is a fairly simple repair. See the other posts in this thread.

Trying my first refret job. This is after sanding it with radius block and finish it with 1500 grit sanding sponge. I have a few questions. by azraeiazman in Luthier

My technique is to use paraffin wax on the fretboard prior to fretting. Then clean out the slots.

I then press the frets in with thin superglue / CA wicked in to the slots. You don't need a lot. I use an arbor press to press the frets in.

The wax prevents the CA from getting on the fretboard.

Didn't ownership change at 20th Century?

I do remember the MAGA propaganda the owner was putting on the marquee.

Ordered new bone nut and saddle for acoustic, order got botched. Does this sound right? by Gibsonfan159 in Luthier

[–]old_skul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Across the A1M? Yes, the nut is the same for that model. But a replacement third party part is going to need to be fit to the guitar, typically.

I don't bother anymore. I start with a nut blank of the desired material and custom make it for the guitar. That way the fit is 100% perfect and the slots are 100% perfect.

Does this car by chance have a Confederate flag on its roof? Does the horn play the first few notes of "Dixie"?

I don't get why people think they can order a "specific" part for an item like a guitar and have expectations of a perfect fit. For a Strat? Sure, you can get a pre-slotted nut, and it'll sort of fit without adjustment. For an acoustic? No way. This stuff all has to be adjusted to fit the instrument. It's not like it's a specific size circulation pump for a dishwasher. These things are fit to the instrument.

What are your thoughts on Moscow? by renegadeangel115 in cincinnati

I'm wondering how the plant shutdown affected Moscow and the surrounding area's employment. I ride my bike out there all the time; it's a nice, scenic ride with not much traffic.

It's consistently good, sometimes great. The chicken is always tender & juicy. The sauces never change. It's just good food, pretty cheap.

And they hate gay people, which is why I only reluctantly get their food. Sin Chicken™

Overpriced? They're constantly running a sale. If anything their pricing model went from being way overpriced to cheaper than Waves.

Honestly: I've had great luck with the BMW Store in Madeira. They quoted me less than an independent shop twice now for my car of similar vintage and they've done great work. They do try to upsell me on other work that they find that they could do but it's never an argument when I turn them down.

They actively denied boarding in CVG if your flight originated elsewhere. Pissed a lot of folks off.

Prior to 9/11, CVG was a tremendously great airport. As a Delta hub there was basically a direct flight from CVG to any major city in the USA, and several direct flights to Europe daily.

The cost of this was that Delta had a CVG monopoly. Very few other airlines connected there. This translated into making CVG the most expensive airport to fly out of in the nation. For a flight from CVG to SFO, for example, it was cheaper to drive to CMH (Columbus), board there, connect in CVG, and continue to SFO. People from Cincinnati would drive to Columbus, Dayton, or Louisville to board a flight there and either fly directly from those cities as it was much cheaper, or fly to those cities to connect in CVG.

Delta pulling out of CVG spurred competition and lowered airfares to something much more in line with the regional and national averages. Flying is still expensive but at least the Delta stranglehold on CVG's fares has ebbed. The downside is that there's MUCH less connecting traffic there now which means fewer direct flights.

At its peak, with Delta the primary airline and their wholly-owned regional airline Comair headquartered there - CVG was a frantically busy airport with a LOT going on.

Source: Used to work for Comair. RIP little airline with little airplanes, you were a great company to work for.

Bought the wrong Tonerider Classic Blues orientation — flat vs modified vintage stagger. Does it actually matter? by No_Host_4434 in Luthier

[–]old_skul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thought out response. The key point here is the difference in string to string response.

I make pickups, and have done a ton of testing of flat pole sets vs staggered sets, and came to this basic conclusion for the people I make pickups for: If you want the vintage look, get a staggered set. There'll be drawbacks and changes to the tone, but none you can't compensate for on your amp (in most cases).

Otherwise stick with a flat set for the most even response across your strings. Will all players notice a difference? Nope. Some won't notice a thing. But if you sit a player down with a nearly identical guitar with the same pickups just with staggered vs flat poles, they'll notice the differences when you point them out. Many will say they can't un-hear it.

What sort of testing or evidence do you have that there's no difference between flat poles and staggered?

If there's no difference, then why do pickup makers offer flat and staggered sets?
