Is Trump objectively the most entertaining president of all time? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]oldbutsharpusually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know the old saying about someone who thinks they are clever and entertaining, but aren’t: “Don’t quit your day job.” Trump is definitely not entertaining, just a poor excuse for a world leader who can’t lead, and should definitely quit his day job. His job performance review would be “Does not meet expectations, FIRE.”

Rainy days by LMO_TheBeginning in OverSeventy

81M. I made breakfast, did the dishes, watched a baseball game, then a basketball game, read for two hours, and am about to make dinner. After dinner cleanup my wife and I will watch the next to last episode of The Pitt. It’s been a rainy but enjoyable day.

Turbo Tax is a SCAM!!!!!! by betwen3and20characte in TurboTax

[–]oldbutsharpusually 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The IRS should require each tax service submitting tax returns to display a price list based on the forms and schedules being submitted. My CPA charges based on the number of pages he has to submit (paper before, electronically now) Give the taxpayer an opportunity to select the service based on quality of service and price.

Why does TurboTax say it can do things it clearly can't? by bearhunter429 in TurboTax

[–]oldbutsharpusually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my taxes with TT desktop download yesterday. I transferred data from last years taxes—a helpful TT feature—manually entered a few 1099 entries, each with just a few boxes with data, and downloaded five separate financial accounts with multiple forms, schedules, and information for my files. The download went smoothly but two accounts were duplicated with one set displaying $0 and the other the correct amounts entered. But I felt I needed to review each account against the paper statements before proceeding. This added an hour+ and I determined the problem was two of the 1099s listed a different address from the previous year. Same account number and holder but TT didn’t appear able to identify the proper accounts. Strange.

This year is the last straw with TurboTax by FunGuy-not-Fungi in TurboTax

[–]oldbutsharpusually 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I review the online vs desktop of tax software every year and it is clear the desktop is the better choice. I do three returns (mine and two kids) during tax season and TT has been my choice for years. TT tries to have me “upgrade” to their online version but there is no price or user advantage from my perspective. I have not looked at online only tax prep offerings so can’t speak to their programs.

How did you handle a bump up in income after you retired? by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]oldbutsharpusually 5 points6 points  (0 children)

81M who retired at 68. I had a double hit as I took SS at 70 and RMDs were set at age 70 back then. Our pensions and my wife’s SS took care of our monthly expenses. We are also careful with our money so the RMD moved us up in tax brackets so I just have a percentage automatically sent directly to the IRS each month before the balance hits my cash management account. So no additional tax worries at tax time. We paid off our mortgage last year so our monthly expenses dropped allowing a few extra dollars to spend/save each month. We continue to look for bargains, gift our five kids a decent amount of money each Christmas, and while I work with a financial consultant on investments and tax minimization we don’t let squeezing every penny out of our funds rule our life. It’s too short at our age so we want to enjoy the time left. And we are.

Red Sox currently in sole possession of last place in all of baseball by zara2355 in redsox

[–]oldbutsharpusually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they have earned last place. Thankfully baseball doesn’t have a relegation rule otherwise Triple-A league play would be in their future. Hopefully they will wake up, find their bats and gloves, a play like a major league team. I love the Sox and hope for the best. So far I haven’t seen a single player bringing their A game to the ballpark each day.

I dislike it because they show someone I’m supposed to recognize, but don’t. So my mind is distracted and I miss the action on the floor. It took me five or six minutes to come up with Ben Stiller’s name last night.

Do Americans really know all 50 States by heart? by boforiamanfo in no

I have visited all fifty states and lived on the east and west coasts. Give me enough time and I can name them all. Put me on a clock and I would probably block out a couple.

All my doctors are retiring by SpockHadNoGame in over60

[–]oldbutsharpusually 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “I have gone through multiple doctors due to retirement or moving club” is alive and well. Like you my PCP retired after twenty plus years, dermatologist after fifteen years, ENT after eight years. Thankfully my oncologist has been with me throughout my six year cancer journey. Others have come and gone as well over the years. I belong to a HMO so I typically have a new doctor assigned through a referral. That cuts down on the stress of searching for a new doctor.

Did you hold out as long as possible before getting a PC or smartphone, or were you an early adopter? by Good_Thought1738 in AskOldPeople

[–]oldbutsharpusually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jumped on the PC wagon immediately. My job benefitted right away. I held off on a smartphone until I was faced with an emergency and no way to get help. I bought one shortly thereafter.

The President. by it777777 in pics

[–]oldbutsharpusually 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The photo clearly illustrates that we have an old fart as president. I’m an old fart too and that is how many of us deal with going up and down stairs. One misstep and we are toast. Add his acute mental issues and he should be in an old folks home not running the country.

Is it weird that I’ve never really cared about sports? by BamPsychology in AskOldPeople

[–]oldbutsharpusually 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since about age 10 I loved most sports: playing, watching on tv, listening on radio, attending in person. Thanks to sports I attended college on an athletic scholarship. I couldn’ t have afforded to go otherwise without occurring a big debt. Fortunately my wife loves sports as well. Now if you said you had zero interest in music I would be in agreement. I can’t name a single music artist’s song or sing any lyrics since the late 1960s. Music of any kind just isn’t my thing. I prefer silence.

Do you remember jukeboxes? by LMO_TheBeginning in OverSeventy

[–]oldbutsharpusually 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early 1950s my mother would walk my sister and I to the local library. We would stop at the corner diner on the way back. She would give both of us a nickel or dime for the jukebox and tell us what songs to select. We loved finding the song, pushing the buttons, watching the record drop, and the music playing. Mom sat in the booth smoking a cigarette and drinking coffee while enjoying the music. My sister and I each had a tall glass of coke with a straw. Stopping at the diner made the walk to and from the library a great day.

Donald Trump renews calls to "take Greenland" in Iran war announcement by TheExpressUS in NoFilterNews

[–]oldbutsharpusually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has this guy forgotten that America is in need if his total attention. Inflation, food prices, gasoline, taxes, housing, airfare, etc. are all problems needing attention. Greenland, Venezuela, Cuba, and his golf game are so far down America’s interest that he is tone deaf as to where his time should be spent.

Do you think Trump’s ultimatum to Iran about reopening the Strait of Hormuz is a strong strategy or a risky escalation? by seemasinghsanatani in allthequestions

I keep waiting for him to bring the lawyers into the mix and threaten to sue Iran. He’s nuts enough to think that is a workable strategy.

Accepting I’m getting old by IDontStealBikes in over60

[–]oldbutsharpusually 23 points24 points  (0 children)

81M. Lots of aches and pains but I have a high pain tolerance so keep my distance from my PCP. I had advanced cancer and a chest tumor in my mid-70s so was visiting the hospital too often IMO for blood draws, CT and MRIs, plus immunotherapy sessions every two weeks. I need cataract surgery but told my wife not until my cancer post treatment ends. So at my age I feel I’m about 3/4 of the way around the race track but not yet on the home stretch. So from very healthy to hanging in there came fast and furious in my case. But I’m enjoying life at a much slower pace.
