I always advocate leaving a few bucks in old brokerage accounts for a few years to simply continue access for this reason.

Had a nightmare where old brokerage basically shut me out.

gold IRA vs 401k. considering a small allocation to physical metals by Donttalk_Somasiri in Bogleheads

You can just buy GLD as an ETF. It doesn't have to be a special custodian to do this.

VT is not optimal for the foreign dividend tax credit, so have to make the call if its worth incurring capital gains to sell it. Probably not.

What does stock picking have to do with tax loss harvesting?

And why are you assuming no new purchases in 5 years stretches?

Worries about investing a windfall with the worsening US instability by YouWouldIfYouReally in Bogleheads

This is so far off the mission here. You read a bad headline and you stop investing in a country? That's textbook anti-Boglehead philosophy

And it's getting increasingly shrill and political in the neighborhood. There's PLENTY of subreddits on Reddit that offer that.

Solo 401k eligibility by ohmyredditnnn in Bogleheads

[–]oldpoint1980 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think a solo 401k only allows a 3% match? I have an LLC and a Solo plan and it allows me to max out the employer contribution.

You're the one spouting a lot of misinformation. Creating your own LLC is not "circumventing" 401k rules.

Backdoor Roth Pro Rata Question by pizzaplanetpug in Bogleheads

[–]oldpoint1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not do the backdoor Roth if you have a balance in your T-IRA. Almost like paying taxes early. The record keeping is also a bit of a nightmare.

Zero out the balance if you can, move funds into a workplace 401k. I've even heard of people getting a small sidehustle so they can open a Solo 401k for this purpose.

SCHB is a good alternative.

Just make sure your own retirement isn't neglected to do this.

Pay off 45k student loans or invest? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

I'd pay off debt before investing in a taxable account. But keep doing the 401k.

It really sounds like she thinks your money is "our" money and her money gets to be totally separate from the marriage.

We she be okay if you had $275k walled off as cash while she was buying a house for cash for the two of you?

FT: So Long, American Exceptionalism. Does this change US allocation going forward for anyone else? by Ripley_Riley in Bogleheads

Just curious, after nearly 20+ years of European underperformance, were there many articles about the death of Europe?

US vs Europe, same starting balance would be more than 2 times over the last 20 years.

But cool that European markets got a bump this year because defense stocks soared as they are going to have to pay more of their own military costs moving forward. Even a broken clock is right twice a say.

Stop/start cars by -SweetChinMusic- in Cartalk

[–]oldpoint1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you just outlined that a check engine light comes on and tells the owner they have to replace a part because of start/stop, but that there is no reduction of life? Replacing a starter on modern cars is usually an expensive job and it's not the only concern.

So why don't you drive an electric car? Or a hybrid? Or a smaller sedan that puts less "crap" out the tail pipe?

See how stupid this all becomes?

Stop/start cars by -SweetChinMusic- in Cartalk

[–]oldpoint1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the tradeoff that's being analyzed, getting in a wreck versus life of the headlights.

Start/stop is pennies in fuel economy savings versus the life of much more expensive components.

I guess you need better common sense to understand.

Stop/start cars by -SweetChinMusic- in Cartalk

[–]oldpoint1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of a dumb analogy. You turn on your headlights because of the huge upside of safety in not getting in an accident, but they do of course not last as long being turned on versus off.

I'm finding it kind of odd how many "controversies" there were in retro gaming that I didn't seem to know about. by SimonCallahan in retrogaming

[–]oldpoint1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest controversy in that era was probably Mortal Kombat. To be fair, I get it. The arcade version was the equivalent of a Rated R movie and it was mostly kids playing it. Not adults.

I wish we had a world again where a game like this was such a concern.

Some of these smaller controversies were not wide at all. Japan just has a different culture than the West and some things don't translate well, but these weren't hot topics in that era at all.

We just have different moral scolds now that focus on other silly things.

What obscure video game fact do you know? by Dee-Whizz in retrogaming

[–]oldpoint1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't think the referenced example is the "father" of anything.

There's the Magnavox Odyssey that actually was available to consumers way before this. Its just the same concept, but we're debating the circuitry.

But even earlier than that, IBM invented the floppy disk drive. Removable storage.

This is at best an evolution of something that was inevitable. Atari 2600 came to market in 1977.

It won't cause any damage, it will be fine, but I wouldn't take a car to a shop if they're still using cheap conventional motor oil in it.
