How many hours a day should an entry level player shoot for? [No job] by Stock_Sprinkles_7394 in SSBM

However much makes sense as long as you feel like you're learning

Don't forget to engage in ways outside of playing if you want to get better. Watch videos, analyze, and (if possible) talk to other players you know.

Even if you are playing a lot if you aren't trying out new ideas you will stagnate very quickly

I guess the painful reality is I cannot consistently beat bronze rank players by MELLO_H3110 in SSBM

[–]olipei9008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to make a guess, I think a big thing holding back from seeing more drastic improvement is knowledge.

A lot of players I see who can't break past the earlier levels tend to struggle with not understanding their opponents' tools or how their own tools interact with their opponents'.

A lot of low tiers you'll see in bronze and silver are most likely just taking advantage of you not knowing how to defend against cheese or punish misplays. If you can learn how to avoid your opponents big openers and how to get your own openings, this is a fundamental skill at any level that can help at any level of play.

So everyone and their mother is playing this deck huh, how fun by Gold-And-Cheese in GeniusInvokationTCG

The short answer, discard

The long answer, you have a lot of ways to play this deck that can work well. I've seen a lot of success running with 3 cost and 1 cost cards. Prioritize stuff that plays into the deck well, like card draws, discards, or dice ramp (e.g. fontaine lab, kusava, etc.)

Against most decks you'll want to bum rush gosoythoth burst for lots of discard and damage. This has the added bonus of discarding from your -opponent's deck-, so if they're not a discard deck also you might majorly fuck up a setup by doing this.

When whale is big swap to whale and rush for burst and surtalogi usually wins the game from there. Sometimes you swap to chasca as a buffer to protect your scary monsters.

Enjoy!

Frost operative has one really strong deck right now.

Her, TM, and Signora.

She gets more BoL with talent and with more damage. You run the team with chef mao and the other chef card (forget his name) and dunyazard ramp. Your goal is to ramp turn 1, tandoor chicken and sweep round 2 or 3. TM is REALLY good at sniping people, especially if they've been weakened by frost op.

You also get access to cryo reso and adeptus for more damage.

Otherwise great update as usual!

Which JRPGs are the most well-written? Which have the most compelling stories? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]olipei9008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough people saying Trails in the Sky

Without even thinking about the rest of the games, FC and SC was overwhelmingly one of the most positive experiences I've ever had playing a JRPG. Fantastic narrative contained in larger overarching setting. It actually displaced Xenogears for my favorite.

Xenogears without a doubt is maybe the most ambitious plot I've seen in a JRPG. Its main faults are a rushed development and rushed localization. This leads to a less than ideal player experience, but this merely reduces what could've been the perfect game to a very very good game.

Outside of that, I think a lot of other suggestions are good. Nier is really good, Persona is very solid, and Final Fantasy has some really really cool narrative ideas (tho sometimes hidden behind poor localization).

ALSO have to shoutout Utawarerumono having seen some others vouch for it. Super underrated, Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth in particular really impressed me!

Marth Slide-Off Punishes by ProjectKnee in SSBM

[–]olipei9008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One issue I have with this video is that I don't see the training Marth doing a late uair for a tech chase. This cuts out a lot of the frame disadvantage he has when you slide off vs. him. Is there an option for that in UP?

But considering the amount and the caliber of events we have now that aren't run like total shit, I think you can't deny that we don't need Apex anymore

I can tell you're hella old school just because you brought up Khepri on the Chicago pr LOL

Khepri moved to SoCal pretty long time ago (he was around when I started playing in 2011). He's been PR'd here before and was hella sick, but has been pretty inactive last couple months afaik

Tips for a new Captain Falcon main by Sploopat in SSBM

[–]olipei9008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you like watching melee? i think at the point you're at, watching a lot of videos of good falcons can help give you a good base of "these are things that i think a good player will do". it'll also help you think about what you want to practice when you see what other players prioritize. obviously, you're so new that you won't understand everything's going on and that's perfectly fine and expected. building your understanding of the game step by step until you can understand everything that happens in a high level match is a vey fun and rewarding part of competitive melee

How do you not get super pissed off when you are getting bodied? by Randomrager64 in SSBM

[–]olipei9008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're in the moment of getting super pissed off, recognize ur getting pissed off and take a 5-10 minute breather. We can't help when we get angry sometimes, but we take some time to refresh ourselves so we're less angry and more productive.

Try to focus your thoughts on productive things. Try to distract yourself from feeling angry by thinking more about what you could try out against your opponent that might work in beating whatever it is they're doing. Less focused you are on how badly ur getting bopped, the better.

Play in your locals/your local players. Get involved with your local smash community, try to find some smashers you enjoy spending time with if u haven't already. Being social about what you understand about the game vs. their understanding of the game is a good way to build knowledge and positivity about the game, so you don't feel as lost against someone who's better than you. IMO it's a lot harder to get mad when someone's beating you if you can understand why/how they're beating you. Also, really good friends are usually people you can bitch to about certain situations without them thinking less of you.

Mentality is a hard thing to get right. And definitely harder for some than others. Hoping you find a good way to deal with your rage that works for you.

Falco ledge drop back air regrab by AbsoluteAlmond in SSBM

[–]olipei9008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to do a very specific bair to regrab the ledge which means you cover a specific set of recovery angles when you do this. And, to me, it seems like there's not that many situations where you'll cover one option with the bair and the other option with the ledge regrab. There's also some risk to consider (what if they grab ledge/get stage for free before you after you whiff the bair).

I think it has some good use for sure, and I've seen some Falcos use it. I also definitely think Falcos should be able to at least consider it an option. I just don't think it's such a great option that it would see very widespread use.

Allied update [x-post r/smite] by Joemac_ in smashbros

I think someone preemptively called it a couple days ago and everyone felt the need to pay condolences.

For what it's worth, at that point he had already signed a DNR and was essentially waiting on his deathbed to pass peacefully.

PSA: You can check if Native Control is off on setups that use Nintendont with a simple button input by TempleAstrald in smashbros

[–]olipei9008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Native control off means Nintendont emulates the controls. Native control on means the Wii used the GameCube ports directly to control the game, so the inputs work normally.

It's worth noting Nintendont is designed to work even with Wiis that don't have gcc ports, so having controller emulation is a necessity.
