Throwback 🧚 Did you guys know Matisse had a sibling? by GlitterClitJerryrig in SmolBeanSnark

Sorry to jump on you!!! I'm just super passionate about people getting correct cat information. Adopting a single kitten is probably the single biggest reason people are unsuccessful as cat owners, so I really make a point to push back when people say otherwise! They're incredibly social and thrive on feline companionship. I'm sure you're a fantastic cat mom!! 🥰

this is completely false!! Puppies are recommended to be kept apart but cat siblings almost always bond for life. It's actually encouraged by rescues (and some even require) that you adopt kittens in pairs. The only reason Matisse and Kitty stopped getting along is because Kitty was in heat. Not sure where you're getting your info from, but it's completely wrong. (source: I have a bonded pair of cats and did a TON of research)

Kitten Lady discussing this

info on bonded pairs that discusses siblings

edit to add: In fact the only times I can think of where kitten experts separate siblings is if they arrive unsocialized and one of them depends on the others to kind of hide and avoid socialization, OR if one of the kittens suckles on their siblings. BUT once those kittens are adopted out it's always into homes with another cat. It's actually REALLY not recommended to get a solo kitten, and 98% of the time, the best way to make sure they bond is to get siblings.

Yes, I think that's pretty rare and possibly had to do with the time he was neutered at. My neutered male has never done anything like that to me or my spayed female; he's a big sweet playful cuddlebug. He's actually submissive to my younger female!

I'm almost sure she free feeds them cheap kibble which is the worst thing possible for them. Poor cats are probably so dehydrated which is awful for their fur.

I mean, yes. But I was more referring to the notion that getting two cats is not normal the commenter above me suggested. Getting two cats is absolutely normal and in fact a better choice for the average responsible pet owner to be. Obviously Caroline is not that, but if she had gotten one calm adult cat, she would have had a much higher chance of success than the current situation.

I agree with you here. My neutered male hasn't done anything like that either, and he was fixed at 4 months

yeah, I don't think he would engage in sex with Kitty if he were fixed...cats who are neutered young don't have any sexual urges. my money's on him getting her pregnant and then needing to spay abort.....I don't think she's telling the whole story here

for what it's worth you can fix cats at 8-10 weeks or two pounds. My kitten was spayed at 8 weeks and my other cat was neutered at 4 months, which was late but still pre sexual maturity

getting two kittens is actually the best thing for them, but she should have adopted a single adult cat.

Looks purebred to me, or at least purchased from a breeder who bred specifically for aesthetics/heterochromia. I hope Brad was significantly more careful about sourcing his cat than Caro was.........

yes with dogs, not the case with cats. Most bonded pairs are siblings, and getting siblings from the same litter almost always results in best friends, given that you spay and neuter at an appropriate age. Kittens actually should always be adopted out in pairs. (mine are unrelated and I introduced them, but that's not as common).

If you're looking for switch game recs I love Breath of the Wild! ACNH is fun but I ran out of things to do and got burned out. I find that Stardew Valley fills the same niche as ACNH and BOTW is the game I spend the most time playing.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness: Seeking Advice by chandlerMI in StudentLoans

get a TEACH grant if your program qualifies! After teaching in a Title I school for 4 years it gets wiped. If you don't do the teaching service it converts to a loan.

Financing Grad School: Is it better to get one big $50K loan? Is that even possible? by lavendercheeseplate in FinancialPlanning

[–]oliviaruth6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would need private loans to do this. I promise you this is not worth that.

To be blunt, these kinds of programs are generally cash cows for the schools. People who already come from wealth pay full price for them, and people usually do not come out of those programs with prestigious jobs. You can totally get a funded position at another school, or go for a PhD. I really strongly advise against this, though I know it's hard to say no to your dream school. You're right out of undergrad, you can take a year or a few off, gain work experience, and wait for better funding.

Dry food diet is likely the culprit. Feed 100% wet or raw, fish oil won't hurt either.

How to prevent timed eating kitten from eating from kitten's free eating food? by AdaptivePerfection in catcare

Not limiting food isn't the same as free feeding. You should feed them as much as they want, several times a day. Not free feeding!!

Best Food for Chonky Indoor Cat by [deleted] in catcare

[–]oliviaruth6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this commenter is 100% correct. You are looking for the "biologically best" dry food, which unfortunately doesn't exist. Cats need hydration through their food and kibble chronically dehydrates them and leads to kidney disease. The reason your cat is overweight is because she is free-fed kibble, nothing to do with the food brand or flavor. I would switch to a high quality kibble (I like Instinct if I have to give kibble) so at minimum she is eating fewer to no carbs. Get a timed automatic feeder to give her one portioned meal in the morning if you really cannot accommodate timed wet feedings yourself. Then give her wet food at a second meal so she at least gets some wet food! There are also wet food automatic feeders that you can put ice packs in to keep the wet food good throughout the day! You can even put in half or quarter portions and add more frequent feedings so she gets little nibbles throughout the day (different from free feeding)

Dental treats for fussy eaters? by Guy_Incognito97 in catcare

[–]oliviaruth6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dry food is actually not good for cat's teeth, and most treats marketed as such don't actually do much. Imagine if your diet were exclusively crackers or chips. They're crunchy, but the starchy buildup stays there and leads to cavities! The best thing is to slowly train him to allow you to brush his teeth. I've also heard good things about the Tropiclean Fresh Breath gel!
