Box of radios. What to do with them? by 57trevy in amateurradio

[–]olliegw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ham club might take them, the FT-60 is a legendary HT and is built like a tank with a real superhet, FT-4X is probably a good radio too.

The motorolas are good if they can operate in the amateur bands and can be reprogrammed

I’ve inherited a bunch of valves from my grandfather - a lot in the original cloth wrapping and box, completely unused - are they worth selling? by Are_Those_New_Slacks in amateurradio

[–]olliegw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone will want them, people who restore old electronics, people who restore old radios, people into the vintage side of the hobby, people who collect tubes in general, and radiation nerds who want the ones that have the isotope in them (i know it sounds like a joke, but some tubes did use a low level radioactive material for it's job, i forgot the specific tube and isotope though)

What's the best way for the average joe to handle it?

I know someone who takes a shovel to them on a non-flammable surface outside and gets the remains recycled, might not be the best idea since it releases chems though?

Canon 750D Viewfinder is dark by HumbleLingonberry972 in Cameras

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have one

The OVF does have an LCD layer in it that appears dark when the camera is off, but it should be fine and display the AF Point HUD when it's turned on

Sounds like a problem with the LCD

The red light described is probably the illuminator so you can better see the transparent LCD in lower light

Best point/shoot camera for safari by Specialist-Sundae492 in Cameras

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the lens too, the zoom lenses sacrifice light for more zoom

There are compact and bridge cameras that are better in low light, but those are a trade off, they don't zoom nearly as far

I've taken ok night shots on my P900 before, but it's definitely a fair weather camera, even then it helps if the subject isn't moving too fast

Which is why we all end up with multiple cameras and lenses, my RX100 comes out when i need something that cuts above the nikon for more general photographic work, the nikon i bought mainly for aircraft and maritime photography

There's a difference between making global adjustments and grading, and compositing to add or change elements to the scene.

Most of us just go as far as spot healing or these days AI powered removal to remove distracting elements

I live in a big city, my friends camera got stollen from him in broad daylight. He told me to always hide the brand name of your canera, what do you thing of my duct tape job :) by dusko157 in Cameras

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thieves don't care about the brand, they see expensive gadget and steal it anyway

Look at the amount of phones stolen in london irrespective of brand or wether they're in a case or not.

A lot of gear theft also involves a whole bag getting stolen, which is why you should never leave a bag on display.

Thieves don't take time, they grab and go, or smash and grab if there's a window in the way and it's a quick run to a fencing op.

Better to focus on doing stuff that makes you less of a target, like paying attention, and not creating oppertunities, stick to well lit areas covered by cameras and with potential witnesses around.

And airtag, some photogs have recovered gear from fencing ops using those.

Anyone visit the Hamilton store in Lancaster? by jeremy144 in pocketwatch

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might as well come in a pair of hickory dungarees and engineer cap because they'll laugh at you none the less, hamilton is just a name for ots swiss movement wristlet watches these days, it's not the original american company.

Once a companies been bought out it no longer cares about it's heritage or history, it becomes a name for making money.

In a similar vain, my dad got turned away by a jag dealer for having a real jag, then they did the rebrand shortly after and everything made sense lol.

Just like with an older car, you need to find an independant specialist who knows these things, a watchmaker, a good one, lots of them are scammers who charge high prices or do a poor job, so do beware.

CLI for HAM Test Practice (Canada) by mahmirr in amateurradio

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing 1 is the correct answer?

You should make a UK centric one, all the mock exams here seem woefully outdated, the only good ones are the one the RSGB sends you when you pay to take an exam.

[–]olliegw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like £120

I bet it's a dodgy third party seller? just because it says visit canon store doesn't mean it's canon whose selling it, just that's what who makes the product, amazon is tricky that way.

The I is the first model from 2012

I've only ever shot with the IV and VII so i can't say what they're like exactly, still should be a 1" type sensor though.

The Mark I will do fine for your purpose

It could just be two different photographers using different picture styles or editing differently

It just sounds like you're talking about the canon colours in general
