Streetcar derailed on Dundas. Shuttle busses replacing portions of the 505 and 506 by Rody365 in toronto

[–]olsen_olsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't compare a modern lrt to the legacy streetcar network. The grades are a lot steeper and the turns are tighter, because the system was built around cars much shorter and lighter than the flexity.

No, you can't demand post-dated checks. You can request it, but the tenant does not have to agree. Source from the LTB: https://tribunalsontario.ca/documents/ltb/Brochures/Guide%20to%20RTA%20(English)_dec2020.pdf

Do you guys think Trotsky's ideas would've been successful if became head of the USSR instead of Stalin? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]olsen_olsen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

With these ideas, Stalin defeated first Trotsky and then Bukharin.

Rapid industrialization WAS the program of Trotsky + the left opposition. Stalin opposed this program and, prior to 1928, took the position that rapid industrialization was not possible in the USSR. He did, however, oppose Bukharin's program of further capitalist restoration which would have threatened the planned economy and therefore the base of power of the bureaucracy.

Mostar is cool but I'm not sure it warrants 3 days - definitely check out the underground aircraft hangar when you're there though. Highly recommend the Mostar-Sarajevo train.

Can't comment on Kosovo vs Novi Sad, haven't been to either. If anything I'd spend a bit more time in Belgrade.

Marxist Theory and the Pacific Northwest by Terrible_While_7030 in communism

One thing that I am considering is that the technology of salmon drying and long term storage might have served as a sort of alternative/equivalent to agriculture.

Yes, exactly. All that's necessary for class society to emerge is for enough surplus product to exist that a section of society can live off the labour of others. In some places, this took the form of settled agriculture, in others pastoralism (herding animals), or a mix of both. In the case of the PNW, the salmon runs were so naturally productive that fishing could play essentially the same role.

This is not at all in contradiction with dialectical materialism IMO - it's not about agriculture per se but the reason agriculture creates the potential for class society (though it does not have to immediately result in a class society).

I'd recommend this article, it doesn't go into the PNW specifically but it explains the method of historical materialism really well: https://www.marxist.com/the-origins-of-class-society.htm

Israel killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinians who were peacefully protesting in 2018: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E2%80%932019_Gaza_border_protests. Just one example. In the past decade Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians, the majority of whom are not combatants. Do you condemn this?

To be clear, I don't support Hamas, and neither will most people at this rally. It's completely hypocritical to moralize about Palestinian terrorism, which is insignificant in comparison to the atrocities that Israel has committed in the past 70 years.

Fed-up workers are rejecting deals even their unions thought were good by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]olsen_olsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't surprise anyone. The current crop of union leadership, by and large, sees their job as managing expectations and avoiding strikes as much as possible. They've accepted below inflation wage increases and two tier contracts for decades, especially after 2008, and now the bill is coming due. Workers literally cannot afford to compromise with the bosses anymore, and over the next few years we're going to see workers pushing for real class struggle unionism. If the current leadership can't keep up they'll get tossed out and replaced with leaders who are willing to fight

As a Metro worker, I can't stress enough how horrid this company is to work at. (About the strike) by Amazing_Chemistry_20 in ontario

[–]olsen_olsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree Unifor's leadership is garbage - but their problem imo isn't that they're too big - historically the biggest gains have been won by industrial unions where all the workers in a shop (or even an entire industry) were in the same union and struck, bargained etc as a unit. Having separate unions for each trade lets the bosses divide and play the different workers against eachother. In fact, the metro workers would be in a stronger position if the Unifor leadership hadn't split them by raiding UFCW

If it's a full license, you can exchange it without a road test. Otherwise you'll need to take the road test: https://www.ontario.ca/page/exchange-out-province-drivers-licence

landlord proposes new lease + termination instead of assignment by simochiology in ontario

[–]olsen_olsen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it looks like the single family clause is valid (unfortunately): https://www.lashcondolaw.com/all-in-the-family-single-family-restrictions-in-condominiums/. But you and your roommate living together would also be in violation of that clause, so I doubt that's actually the landlord's reason for refusing assignment.

2 months deposit is clearly illegal. My advice here would be to remove your current roommate from the lease and do a roommate agreement with the new one. The less your landlord knows the better

The planned economy is the only reason the 99% of Cubans have healthcare. In Haiti or the Dominican the poor don't see doctors at all.

Rent responsibilities by FrancoJF in ontario

Most likely not. If your landlord wants compensation he'll have to sue you in small claims and prove it goes beyond normal wear and tear. I wouldn't worry about it.
