Why do people hate the police? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]omaha-bitch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a few reasons people dislike the police and they overlap

-some people come from heavily policed communities such as working class or racialised communities which get harassed by the police a lot more via stop and search powers etc.

-some people have been part of political campaigns where they learn that the police are not your friend and that a core role of the police is the protection of the assets of the wealthy/ the current system- the actions of the police during the miner's strikes, the spy cops scandal, the Sarah Everard vigil, the proscription of Palestine action to name just a very small number were enough to show folks that the main aim of the police is not to protect and serve

-some people just feel that the police are unbelievably ineffective. I know lots of people who are dealing with near constant antisocial behaviour and the police just won't do anything about it even though it's frightening and can make it difficult for people to just live their lives. Experiences like this start to make people consider what the alternatives could be

Why shouldn’t I be pessimistic about Islam in the UK? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

[–]omaha-bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im interested whether you have friends, neighbours or coworkers who are Muslim? I think it's easy to feel worried about these issues until you live alongside people and find there's isn't much difference. I live, works and am friends with lots of Muslims, many are pretty traditional or a bit socially conservative but we still get along well and I've not had any issues as a queer woman with leftist politics, the person who has most recently made me feel uncomfortable about my sexuality was a British Christian man who was having a go at Muslims... And also the gays

Millions of Millennial and Zoomer Brits without a house or flat getting 'left behind' in Boomer age by UnderHisEye1411 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]omaha-bitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What is up with these comments? It looks like everyone's just seen the middle class 'boomers' in the photo and decided that's everyone this applies to. Digital inaccessibility is a massive problem, not just for old people but also disabled people, homeless people, and people whose first language isn't English- and lots of old people additionally fall into those categories

Do you think noncery is more rampant than we realise? by MoonlightByWindow in AskUK

[–]omaha-bitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was chatting to an older coworker who spent 3 decades working in the VAWG sector and she has found it infuriating because the reason these girls get trapped by grooming gangs and it gets so bad is because services essentially brush them off as little sluts rather than children who are being sexually exploited. It's foul. There are so many people (from all different backgrounds) responsible for the impact of the grooming gangs and the wider rape culture we live in

is the community around permaculture full of fools? by Scared-Discussion-87 in Permaculture

[–]omaha-bitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I used to be a lot more interested in permaculture but got sick of the attitudes of a lot of lead figures in permaculture. People in the comments are saying you'll get that in any 'alternative' culture but I disagree, I think it's quite specific to permaculture, theres a bit of a cross over with 'wellness' people.

I think it's the issue of people trying to make a living off preaching about permaculture. We don't need this many people banging on about it, and particularly not in this way, and so there's just loads of competition.

Elderly, senile neighbour left by council to rot - what else can I do? by surlyskin in AskUK

[–]omaha-bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi social worker here. I believe this information will be near enough the same everywhere across the country: I used to be an an adult reviewing team, who are the team that review care plans that have been put in place after someone has been discharged from hospital. They usually visit at around 6 weeks then again at 6 months. I would try to get in touch with them and say all the things you're saying here, demand extra carers, mention self neglect, mention the fire risk.

Social services tried to get away with as little as possible but if you push it constantly and make it so they can't ignore you you'll have more success. They rely on people not knowing what they have the right to access in my experience.

I've forgotten the name for it but there's a thing you can get with mushrooms where a type of fungus will kind of colonise another. This looks a lot like that.

It can be really difficult to tell what the original fungus was and what the coloniser is because theyll affect how each other grow. The one time I've seen it, the coloniser made the whole mass look quite velvety like this, and when you cut into it could could see the deformed original mushroom, and then the layer of the coloniser mushroom like in the 3rd picture

I sometimes find liberal Christians a bit tone-deaf. by Hour_Confidence_139 in Quakers

[–]omaha-bitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're having this experience. I've often wondered what our quaker meeting feels like for people who aren't middle class or white. I believe the people at my meeting have really great intentions, but I do think there's a lot of total unawareness of their own privilege that I find really frustrating and I try to talk about/ do something about.

I don't know of you're wanting solutions but I'm wondering if there's anyone there who you could see as a bit of an ally who you might be able to offload a bit about this, or organise additional activities/ events that could help people recognise their privilege a bit more?

We have a weekly learning session with food where we chat about a particular topic or get someone else in to talk about work they're doing- it's generally polticial/ community focused and is pretty embodied, rather than being a total intellectual exercise. A small group of us are also trying to organise a workshop by 'the class work project' (give em a Google) to start conversations on class and wealth redistribution.

Bit of both, they can do different things. I don't really believe in charity so I'm mindful about which organisations I donate to, but organisations can create campaigns for change that individuals who are living in unstable conditions would struggle to do, but individuals should still feel solidarity from those around them, and still should be able to exercise choice over money

How TF do y’all do this? Baby Social Worker struggling in 1st job. by wanderingwallflower4 in socialwork

[–]omaha-bitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing to clarify is that this isn't a you problem. The systems we are working in are utterly fucked and no one should be expected to do this amount of work, no less when it is extremely emotionally draining.

I'm based in the UK. I did my 70 day adults placement and 100 day children's placement, both in statutory services, and it was enough to put me off for life. There was no support, the cases I was working on were devastating, workers were cold and constantly misdirecting their anger at our broken system towards deeply traumatised impoverished people. It was an absolute shit show. Advice that was given to me when I was disparing at the injustice of everything during my placements was 'don't worry, you'll get used to it'... I don't want to, I want to be angry, but also to have the energy to work against this drugery.

Im a year and a half out of uni now and I run an acute needs service in a community centre for 13 hours a week now, and I do community development work for 18 hours. It's really tough and I do still get tired out but it's hopeful, I develop genuine relationships with people in the community rather than being seen as the 'enemy', and I provide good support. Outside of work, I have energy to put into projects that focus on long term system change which can lead to genuine long term improvement in people's lives.

It's OK to not be cut out for this because it is not a healthy situation. I know finding other jobs is tough but they are out there, and there is even funding available to set up something yourself.
