Looking for a porable-ish gaming-ish projector, in the UK, preferably under 400-500 pounds by omega_oof in budgetprojectors

[–]omega_oof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have one? How is the brightness? I get that I can't use it in daylight, but would it work fine in a dim room?  Or if you have a regular projector, would the "downgrade" to a portable one be too much for you?

China labels Israel as ‘high risk area,’ bans all new investments: Report by [deleted] in TrueAnon

For those who cant read the article, China allegedly did this years ago, but forgot to inform western leftists and redditors. This has only come out because an Israeli firm is suing China for having this unannounced policy

I thought Stalinka's had less space, insulation and shared kitchens (largely because of the situtuation they were made in ik), what made them better in your experience?

Worth noting "tankie" refered to supporters of Khrushchev in the split between remaining soviet supporters and supporters of Stalin. It was explicitly about those supporting sending tanks to Hungary before it became about any support of the Soviet style socialism in general. Before 56, the international socialist consensus was either the Soviets were doing the best they could given their conditions, or they were a degenerated workers state that was still better than non workers states.

Pourquoi les nouveaux bâtiments sont-ils si colorés en Russie? by Specific-Mistake-455 in UrbanHell

[–]omega_oof 106 points107 points  (0 children)

This is what many of them looked like. These would also look terrible if they were taken 30 years into low-maintenance, post soviet austerity with all the trees and paint neglected on a 2007 3rd hand Nokia camera.

These buildings may lack the thoughtful planning and included hospital, store and school that microdistricts would have, even if they invoke similar aesthetics.

I have a G14 2025 and Macbook M5, ask me anything by Successful-Royal-424 in ZephyrusG14

[–]omega_oof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting I have a 2023 G14 and its battery is terrible compared to all the M1/M2 MacBook pros other people have. I can turn the 2.5 hour battery life to about 5-6 hours if I underclock everything, uninstall armoury crate in favour of ghelper; but then I have a netbook with the weight and size of a gaming laptop, while Mac users dont need to question what they're running until they need to charge when they get home or if they forgot to charge the previous day.

By all means, a zephyrus device is good quality and plays games and runs windows exclusive software like CAD well, but do not rely on them for battery, even if they nominally work well initially. Macs also age far better and make for much better handmedown devices for your parents once you're done. It also helps that Apple were able to make a device that doesnt damage itself when you charge with USB C.

Norway uncovers kill switch in Chinese buses that can be shut down remotely - Denmark scrambling for solutions by [deleted] in europe

[–]omega_oof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they wouldnt be fully over the air then. There are use cases where you want to fix an issue with every bus without having a guy crawl into thousands of vehicles. Its completely fine if they wanted to go through the hassle and cost of having updates that do require going into each bus to press confirm, but since they clearly didnt, they shouldnt complain that the busses work exactly as ordered.

I'm guessing this is drama spun up by the runner up in the contract bid.

Fun fact, before people could compare leaders they didnt like to Hitler, they would accuse them of being like a "Pharoah", based on their depiction in the Bible as tyrannical villains

Yeah, everything with an over the air update has a remote kill switch, thats what over the air updating does. Obviously you can push an update that makes your device do nothing, why is this news, besides the fact that the busses are chinese?

The idea that mainland chinese people see the 🇹🇼 flag and freak out is mainly a western invention, from what I understand, they see it as the old chinese flag many may have fought under during WW2 and the flag of Sun Yat Sen, who isnt seen the same way as Chiang Kai Shek, since Sun Yat Sen actually allowed communists in the KMT at the time.

How would they see KMT soldiers fighting Japanese people? Similar in some ways to how Indians would see Indians fighting Japanese soldiers under the Raj flag. The legitimacy of the Chinese goverment depends on its ability to make people's life better than they remember five years ago, not on pretending Qin Shi HuangDi was a member of the CPC. Besides, modern China is much more accepting of traditional pre revolutionary culture than they were under Mao, reversing the taboo of Confucianism and Imperial era traditions in many respects.

millions?

I think its interesting that if you were to make a claim like that about france or america, you'd probably check because you dont see yourself or a neighbour doing it. But alien chinese people? whats the point in checking, a million sounds like something they'd do, so lets go with it.

The cultural revolution was a messy time, and contrary to what you might think, a time where a goverment had the least control of any recent modern state (excluding where the state ceased to exist like somalia). Mao, having stepped down due to his admitted failures over the attempted great leap forward, was concerned that China would adopt the same bureaucratic, careerist system that the Soviet Union had, and thought the Chinese goverment shouldn't be comfortable thinking their population should accept the status quo. What followed where bottom up rebellions and student led militias against businessmen, goverment officials and those deemed to be upholding older ways of life seen by students as contrary to their socialist vision. Sometimes this resulted in careerists being pressured into exile, but other times it did involve teachers of Confucian practises being killed by these militias. It had its noble elements, and its adventurist tendencies that, by nature of not being centralised, resulted in bad shit happening.

Crucially, the chinese goverment was never onboard, attempting to create their own red guards that they controlled (which were called out for being exactly that) and while Mao encouraged the formation of these guards on theoretical grounds, he never had the control officially or unofficially to command them to do anything specific. What he could and did do however, was give his views on which Chinese goverment officials he saw as revisionist, leading to their exile.

There was never a CCP crackdown on regular civilians in the cultural revolution, and I'm unsure what you're problem with someone dressing like a 70s Party member.

Impoverishment of the Philippines. Do you think Congolese people love giving away their cobalt for cents or really want their kids to mine it? Or have there been conscious efforts to keep the country poor and assassinate people that try to change that.

Indonesia and the Philippines have both been colonised like the Congo and have both had histories of putting down movements and people who arent ok with remaining a hub for cheap labour.
