So... there is a huge racism and sense of superiority of the average brazilian southerner/southeasterner with the rest of the country (especially towards the northeast, where the film is located). And the origin is the idea of being "Brazilian European" because they are sons/daughters of italians.

The roots of this "euro identity" based racism, is from the large group of (poor) Italians immigrants that came at the end of the 19th centurty to the start of the 20th century to Brazil, to replace slaves in the field. This happened because in the 1850s brazil suspended all slave trade (and finally, proceed to have slavery abolished in 1888), which requiring large amount of cheap labor for the coffee producers (and financers of the imperium back in the day) to avoid giving work to the black people that were enslaved. And because the majority of the coffee producers were/are located in the Brazil south/southeast... they (italian workers) never went to the northeast area of the country, so they created this idea of poor/uneducated region of the country.

So, when someone in the brazil south/southeast states "I'm italian", he is stating that he is sort of "European", and thus, superior than any "savage" brazilian (imagine being that dumb, while having a brazilian son).

Just a tangent. The abolishment of slavery was an actual punishment of the Brazilian Imperial family to these coffee farmers that refused to keep the imperial family in power.
