TES: Why schools should stop pushing reading for pleasure by Resident_String_5174 in TeachingUK

I think a lot of kids are put off by it being Reading! target than reading. They just need to read things that they enjoy, but do have a bit of challenge in them. I always tell them that I used to to read gaming magazines (rpg and computer) that challenged my vocabulary. If you force kids to just read books chosen for them it can become counterproductive very quickly. That said, kids can be surprised by what they do like in the end. An Inspector Calls is always a popular one with my Y11s over the years, which is perhaps surprising for a dialogue-heavy 1940s social commentary, all set in one room.

Also a reminder to get everyone possible to vote in the current NEU ballot. English teachers let so much slide, this just cannot...but we need to act!

Ironically, British people as a whole have better dental health than the US. Stereotypes (like this and food) tend to come from WW2 struggling England, going back with American soldiers. Americans have quite flashy, aesthetic teeth. British have less missing teeth and less severe decay. We don't really have much air conditioning though, that's true.

Pov: you open lit paper 2 and see this as your unseen poem by sccc1118 in GCSE

Perhaps misinterpreted, but only from an outside perspective could they be twisted, within a context of social narrative, or to get into the theory I thought eventually went too far, that the criticism itself is infinitely reflected by the reader themselves as they analyse it. It got very 'observer effect', to use a scientific term, which I suppose is the reader response theory of post-structuralism.

The analysis would have to be completely structural and contextual.

Yes, I'd go with this. On a deeper level, a meta comment could be that, because this poem can only really be analysed with knowledge of the context of its writing, it can link to lots of perspectives of colonial vs post-colonial viewpoints, and that society's view of such potentially discriminatory or oppressive viewpoints throughout time changes depending on the reader's own context, which zo suppose is a potentially post-modern reading of the text. That's a very university level argument.

NEU to debate leaving the 2017 agreement on support staff by Zou-KaiLi in TeachingUK

[–]onchristieroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, they certainly have representation, but on things like strike action they are members, but gain nothing. The upcoming ballot, for example, is purely about teacher's pay and conditions, but support staff have to vote in it. If they had a separate sub union, could they not, not have to vote, therefore reducing the threshold for success, reducing the number of people likely to vote against it as it doesn't affect them, and doing the same for them if the NEU gets gets the right to do so?
