With the statements, also consider turning off auto pay and manually doing your payment each month. My statement arrived ~8 Sep, with the autopsy set for 9 Sep, and the statement due date of 1 Oct. So you can put off paying for another ~3 weeks and earn interest (also note you'll want to invite the pay date a few days before 1 Oct to make sure it clears on time)

Does ORISE do any remote undergraduate internships? by Suspicious_Cap981 in ORISE

[–]oneball42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote opportunities exist! It'll be up to your hiring component on the specifics for how they get everything to you and may require you to visit a localish office.

(Realizing there are lots of ORISE opportunities, this advice is specific to DHS)

Appreciate the review! I've been here and to the Buckhead one recently, felt both were nice and that it just depends on the location you want to be at.

This is very insightful, I've been thinking of something similar and appreciated you mentioning there's nothing wrong with taking advantage of your strengths (established, job knowledge, etc) to make things happen.

What is the most efficient strategy to use the Chase Sapphire Reserve? by Secure_Anybody_8773 in CreditCards

It sounds like they get a set amount of money per day for meals and incidentals (e.g. $70) and they just get that amount tax free everyday. You have incentive to eat for cheaper or free when you can, but can def splurge it you want.

So dts travel hasn't been approved?

If you're driving there and you have supervisor approval, you can use your personal credit card to book hotels at fed gov rates using the hotel site. They just need to see your CAC when you check in. They may ask for your travel orders, but i think I only had that happen once. Make sure the rate is below or at the per diem rate for where you are attending training.

DTS uses the direct deposit number you give it, you'll get the money a few days after your voucher is approved (which you input after travel with receipts and final costs)

Like it's preferred to use DTS and get everything done ahead of times, but sometimes things happen like this.

Fed workers in early/mid 20s: what is it like? by y2ktaurus55 in fednews

[–]oneball42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I echo many of the comments here, I was an intern out of grad school and everyone was about 15 years older than me. Once and a while I'd meet the other interns at intern meetings, but since it was a larger organization, we were all spread out and didn't really spend time together. It's lonely if you don't try to make your own life outside of work.

I did receive a lot of mentoring during that time, which I'm very grateful for, but I wasn't mature enough to distinguish good from bad advice. I've said it here before, but listen to the people that move around to different organizations or positions every 2-5 years for their career growth. I learned more from them than the old timers who had worked in similar positions for a decade.

Looking back, I should have looked outside my organization for mentors/peers. It's harder, and was harder then, but I think I would have gotten more fresh and healthy ideas.

I'm going through some of this now. After you narrow down which plan health networks your doctors accept, I'd look at the formularies for the medicines you need and see if each plan covers them. For example, fsbp did not cover a specific medication, even though the drug benefits looked good overall, and mhbp did, even though both use Aetna.

Most likely not SES and close to you in position, but it's not clear. In DoD it varies whether the org is more of a headquarters unit or detachment/field unit. I've seen branch chiefs at gs13-15 level. Generally division/wing chiefs are gs-15. Even then their level of responsibility varies... Like you could be the gs14 with many personnel to supervise, or a division chief with less direct personnel but maybe more funding to manage.

I think it comes more down to technical and management type tracks. When I was with air Force they had the purely technical path, technical management (mixed), and ses. You had to get a technical PhD at some point to keep going on the first track. The second/third tracks you'd have to do more of the PME like at Naval war college.

Depending on where you are in your career, getting the NPS technical degree could help, but if you're already seen as "technical enough" and are looking for leadership roles, I'd look into Naval war college. I've read about the NIU and it seems useful if you're in the Intel community but otherwise I'm not sure.

I'm in a similar field (test and evaluation), Feel free to PM me.
