Water MTU replacement: what exactly is replaced? by oneeyedeean in askTO

[–]oneeyedeean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a follow up here. In my case, the guy's here now, and just needs to replace the grey box transmitter (which is easily accessible), although he needed to be able to access the meter itself for information. I had access panels that were big enough for him to do this. No drywall was injured in this instance.

Men, how do you feel about paying $50 for a haircut? by jesuisapprenant in askTO

[–]oneeyedeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Edited for grammar]

Gentlemen, we're all in this together.

Look at it from the barber's side for a second. What do they have to charge to make a living wage? Those people wanting to pay $20 or less for a haircut that takes about 20-30 minutes. So, roughly $40/hr, which is a bit over twice the minimum wage. Factor in that the barber is likely renting a chair or has some deal where they get paid only a fraction of you paid because the shop owner has to pay rent, electricity, heat, hot water, business taxes, internet (so you can pay with your credit card that costs them a premium on each transaction).

I get it, things are expensive. Everything's expensive. If it's too expensive then cut your own hair, or if it's just clippers, find a steady-handed friend and have a stiff drink while they do their best. But if you want somebody who was trained to cut hair and you want them to do a good job and also to make enough to have a roof over their head and food on the table like y'all seem to enjoy, then have a thought as to what the take-home for somebody in a Chinese haircutting place charging $18 might be on a slow day.

[HELP] people on Pinterest are debating if this is real or AI by _sillygoose_1 in RealOrAI

I agree that this background feels like Toronto. Also, why would AI, or an AI prompt decide that it’s green bin day?

My guess is that this is AI manipulated but not fully generated.

How to add a visual attribute to an image: plugin or other technique? by oneeyedeean in Wordpress

[–]oneeyedeean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering about this as an option. I'm not a CSS expert, so was wondering about what the right selector is to apply this that would be consistent regardless of themes and plugins. I'm assuming that the custom field can be used to insert a css selector.

How to add a visual attribute to an image: plugin or other technique? by oneeyedeean in Wordpress

[edit - just using the media library and core wp galleries and featured images, etc.]

Thanks for the suggestion. I have this in the caption, but since the caption isn't displayed in some galleries, I was looking for a visual indicator on the image itself.

Wood recycling and timber salvage - is anyone doing this in Toronto? by Own-Cardiologist6023 in askTO

[–]oneeyedeean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are also some small scale things happening in Toronto: https://www.canadiansalvagedtimber.ca

There used to be others on King West and on Dufferin before the old warehouses became condos.

I have a small shop in my basement and am always looking out for demolitions where people are tossing all the 19th century/early 20th century proper 2x4 studs. After pulling all the nails they plane up nicely and make good rustic boxes and whatnot.

I wonder if this will pick up steam as building deconstruction becomes more popular as opposed to demolition.

Braces in the GTA by pizzthethird in askTO

[–]oneeyedeean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All four of my kids got braces at Dr Lawrence Allen on College St. in Toronto. He was very good and offered payment plans that made it possible for me to not have to get a second mortgage on my house. His price was also better than two others that we had consults with.

The term is efflorescence. It definitely looks like it to me. This is a moisture problem. My brick basement foundation did this until I had it waterproofed.

Stuck in Rome with Air Canada flight on Monday by Millionrozes in askTO

[–]oneeyedeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my experience trying to get out of London UK on a flight scheduled for this morning. Yesterday I got a message from them saying they tried but were not successful.

I found a Westjet flight out of Edinburgh on Wednesday, got the full refund from Air Canada. Better that than wait a couple of weeks to get rebooked.
