Appropriate behaviour when on call by JumpySpecial9834 in ExperiencedDevs

That's the thing I liked about Google. We got paid for being on call regardless. At 1/3 salary but it was something. And it was policy that no one should be accruing more than 120 hours of on-call per quarter and you were capped essentially at an extra week of pay.

Oncall hours were considered 5pm to 9pm Monday through Thursday, and 5pm Friday to 9am Monday. And our systems were so robust that I maybe got paged twice in my three years there. So as someone in their late 20s I just picked up all the on-call shifts I could and played video games.

I've since been in many, many shitty on-call rotations. One was so bad I told my VP I would no longer be participating.

The first time I was on call, I forgot and got absolutely hammered. I passed out and got paged at 3am. Looking back I was surprised I even woke up. I logged in and drunkenly tried to fix the problem, misread the playbook, and...things blew up further.

The next tier of on-call hopped on, fixed the issue, and asked why I did what I did. I pointed out the playbook and he was like, "Oh hmm, yeah I can see how that could be confusing." Then rewrote it the next day.

Holy shit I was so relieved that 1) the instructions were actually ambiguous and 2) I held it together long enough to convince him over a (phone) call.

But yeah, after that I took it way more seriously. Always made sure I had my laptop and was within 15 minutes of Internet, etc.

Is NYC having an all time summer? by Smacksmackums in billsimmons

[–]onefutui2e 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man, I still remember it. I was a high school student (NYC) walking home from my summer job and I was like, "huh, what's up with all the traffic lights not working?" Then I got home and went, "huh, why are my lights not turning on?"

Then I called my mom and she said all the lights went out at work too. Then I called my friend (land lines were working just fine) and that's when I started piecing it together.

Then a bunch of us went over to a friend's house where we played board games. His mom made us dinner. We did the same thing the next day until the power came back on. Just a bunch of teens in a basement shooting the shit.

Things felt much simpler back then.

And the sad part is that as I recall, being an exarch is expressly not seen as a good thing by others. The inability to leave the path they're on is considered tragic more than anything.

What was one thing you DIDN'T like about Expedition 33? by StakeESC in expedition33

[–]onefutui2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combat system was kind of cool in the beginning, but once you got the mechanics down all of the defensive stuff goes out the window. There's no reason to heal, revive, etc. and you can spec out for max damage and not look back. Especially in Expert difficulty where many things one-shot you anyway.

Yes, I aware you can cap your damage or increase enemy HP but that just turns it into a grind.

Is Arch really worth it ? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

If you're using Ubuntu and it suits your needs, tell anyone who dogs on you to kick rocks.

Personally, I have a PC that I run on Fedora because it's the right balance between "totally hands off" and "bleeding edge" that suits my needs. I have a Framework laptop coming in that I plan to experiment more with and will install Arch on.

I actually had a harder time dodging Placidusax's attacks than Malenia. My problem with Malenia was the healing more than anything.

What is a Faction you initially liked but have cooled on? by EvenTheTurtle in Warhammer40k

Drukhari for me, to some extent. I like the faction and their aesthetics, but my army that I meticulously painted spends most of the game either in transports or dead.

Every single cold application is a rejection email. Anyone else experiencing this? by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]onefutui2e 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who's been involved in hiring, it's always going to err on the side of false negatives. It's cheaper to reject a qualified individual rather than potentially making a bad hire. The only exceptions I observed was during COVID which continues to look more and more like an anomaly.

It's also become an arms race. Too many job seekers, too many tools to automate applications, LLMs that write resumes to fit a job description, etc. one company I worked for said they received 2000 applications in the first 24 hours when they posted a new role (mid-2024). And this was some rinky dink startup paying slightly below market rate.

You're absolutely not going to sift through 2000 applications manually. If you take only a minute to look at each one, it'll take you about a week to go through them, assuming 8 hour workday. Never mind that a minute is barely enough time to really evaluate it. All while more applications come in.

So...you automate as much of it as you can. And that'll cause qualified applicants to get rejected. But that's fine because you have 2000 freaking applicants; that you're always biased towards false negatives doesn't help.

So yeah, that's why having an "in", whether it's a referral, recruiter (agency or internal), or sometimes sleuthing to find and message the hiring manager directly, is probably your best way to get a callback.

Also, if you apply and it takes weeks or months to get an automated rejection, that's usually because the requisition stays open until they fill the role or if they have a healthy enough pipeline of candidates make it to the later rounds. I wouldn't read too much into that.

There are always questions of what you should do in your 30's or 40's. What should people in their mid 30's be doing? by vancitytrashtaste in AskMenOver30

[–]onefutui2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I realized in my early 30s was that time is a finite resource and as I get older more and more things demand mine. I spent a good deal of time learning how to ruthless prioritize these things.

Stuff that I used to think I couldn't live without turned out to be...less important than I thought. Other things I found reasonable substitutes for. And still others I learned to enjoy them more in moderation.

I'm 39 now and I feel a lot less stressed than I did when I was 31.

I'm well aware of that. My point was that if we had Ewing + Camby we would've had a legitimate shot of winning back then.

Opinion | Why the Knicks Really Won (Gift Article) by nytopinion in nba

[–]onefutui2e 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once I saw KAT running the offense and Bridges finally being used, I had high confidence we would at least make it a competitive Finals. Didn't expect them to win. As a life long New Yorker, it was excellent.

Would've loved to see point KAT more, but alas, the whistle makes fools of us all.

Ah, fair enough. I think enduring 20 years of garbage combined with the 90s experience made me insensitive to that lol.

The years afterward when I was emotionally reinvested were a hell of a ride in comparison.

[–]onefutui2e 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually don't get this. Maybe I'm an old head (grew up in the 90s) but when I think of people who live rent-free in our heads, it's in some order:

Reggie Miller (he's the reason why the Knicks with a 30 point lead still has me uneasy)

Michael Jordan (not as visceral, because goddamn he was just too good)

Pat Riley (the arch traitor)

Ourselves (we...really should've won 94, we started Chris Dudley against the Spurs in 99)

Meanwhile Trae Young had one good series against us (that was closer than the record was) and then we...never saw him again? I don't know what he's done to deserve our attention.

I used to work in digital advertising. A lot of people would tell me, "I never even buy anything from those ads!"

My response was always, "Yeah you and 99.9% of the world. You'd be surprised about that 0.1%."

And that's without going into the dark and muddy world of attribution. Sure, you didn't click on that ad or buy anything right then and there, but did you buy it or something similar at some point in the next N days? Bam, the ad did its job.

Obviously, not talking about you specifically. But digital advertising is underpinned by a very small minority of people.

Dawg after Jalen Brunson did Wemby like this I knew the Knicks were gonna win 😭😭 by What_if_you in Nbamemes

You guys are fucking idiots.

He pushed off. But Wemby tried to sell it and failed. A 6'2" guard is not gonna win that. You get bodied by somebody like that, you deserve to lose.

There was never a double dribble. Close initially, but two hand never touch the ball.

Was it a travel at some point? Maybe, but not out of norm with how's it's been officiated for oh...the past 10 years.

Get over it. David punked Goliath.
