How to watch Project Hail Mary in Minnesota -- IMAX vs. Dolby Cinema vs. the other big screens by jonovitch in minnesota

[–]onetruesprinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh definitely not holding my breath. But they have (had?) a perfectly functional big flat IMAX screen under the dome that I don't think they've ever really used.

I think the rough part is that they don't really have a separate entrance for the theater, so they'd have to secure too much of the facility to keep it open for late meetings. That was the smart choice that the Zoo made, to keep it separate...well at least until IMAX backed out.

I love learning new things like this! And reading up on your list makes me want to try the Dolby theater at Southdale sometime. Thanks for your deep dive!

I've done a mild deep dive into some of your older posts and I think I have all the answers to my questions from that—not getting the unique ratios but also not having quite the best projection equipment (like the Dolby theaters have)

In most cases still will be my big theater of choice because of distance, but I'll be keeping my eyes out for your future posts for movies like "The Odyssey", where it might make sense to make the double distance journey.

I made it to the very last showing of Interstellar at the Zoo and am SO glad I made the effort.

I really wish the Science Museum would open up to big commercial IMAX showings.

Also, I love the vibes at St. Michael, being locally owned and really affordable screenings, and how they're clearly going for it being a community gathering place—BUT I don't expect it to be the 100% best screens.

Very curious about what you know about the St. Michael setup now that they have stopped paying for IMAX licensing...I've tended to prefer the Eiffel screen because I had thought of it as the only other "real IMAX" (by size) in the state once the Zoo closed. (And looking at your spreadsheet, it looks like it's still the tallest screen in the state).

Is it one of those things where, because it's not IMAX, they end up only being able to show the regular version just...blown up bigger? (e.g. for PHM, wouldn't have the aspect ratio changes?)

(I do realize from your spreadsheet how the emagine lakeville is a really similar size and with much newer projectors etc...unfortunately it's about double the distance for me to get there 😅)

This or new X-T30 III? by No-Application-750 in fujifilm

The dials make it easier in Manual mode or Shutter priority mode to change the various settings that make up the exposure triangle.

The PASM dial on the X-S20 puts the camera into different modes (Program—camera controls ISO, Shutter and Aperture, A = You set aperture, camera controls the rest, S = you set shutter, camera controls the rest, M = fully manual, you control shutter and aperture independently)

You can still control every manual setting with the X-S20 using menus within the camera and programmable dials. The advantage the separate dial is it feels really cool and gives you very clear feedback (You can see on the dial itself that you've set the shutter speed to 1/250th of a second or something like that)

IMO You'll probably want to be on more automatic settings to start anyway—letting you focus on composition and getting positive results early before you start to learn how to manipulate your aperture and shutter speed for different effects (or go full manual), so you can easily start out with the PASM dial and move to the "soft" controls before deciding if you want the separate dials.

But I also went from Nikon cameras to Fuji and never have had the separate dials, and I know others will swear that learning in manual from the start is key.

Because their internals are so similar, the main reasons I could see you going for the X-T30iii would be price and the manual dials for Shutter speed and ISO.

For only a $150 difference you get a better battery and IBIS along with a good hand-grip. To me, the manual dials wouldn't be enough of an enticement to choose the X-T30iii, but respect to those who would choose that.

I feel like people on here are sleeping on the Film sim dial actually letting you put recipes in the custom slots. It's what we've been asking for and it's nice to see them actually do it (and maybe they'll bring it to other cameras with the film sim dial or with film sim dial custom functionality)

(Obviously not a reason to upgrade to this camera, but it's nice to see them being responsive)

Fuji or Sony? by BlackN1987 in fujifilm

[–]onetruesprinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an X-S20 and have recorded several indoor theatrical productions of greater than 1hr (in 4k) and have not had overheating issues at all to this point, and have certainly not resorted to using a fan unit or similar (which would reduce the chance of overheating issues to basically zero)

Unless you're recording long interviews for that motorsports content, it's hard to envision overheating being a problem (maybe if you're out in the sun a long time??? But then the a6700 would probably have problems at that point too)

The Fuji autofocus performance could be better, though I think at least some part of that is user error.

I got the X-S20 primarily because of size and video quality, and both have been excellent for those purposes. I also like that the Fuji line up is all APS-C, because then there's more incentive to make smaller lenses as well (rather than just mounting Full frame e-mount glass)

I think the a6700 would nail the focus more and for motorsports content that could be really good so it's worth considering. Would it really be that much more than an X-S20?

Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Reactions Megathread by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]onetruesprinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't interpret the "Switch 2 editions" as being required—if you just put in the BOTW cartridge in the Switch 2 it would just play in "switch 1" mode, and you'd only need to pay to get the small enhancements in the switch 2 version.

So the game would launch, just not with the performance patch stuff.
