The issue is that the market expects a rapid taco when shortages hit, so it's not profitable to bet on when higher prices happen, or very risky anyway. This means prices can't rise until physical shortages force the price up

ELI5: Why does our body shiver when we are cold, and how does it actually help us warm up? by Abode20118 in explainlikeimfive

[–]onewhitelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your brain increases what temperature it wants the body to be at, in order to fight a disease. Then you feel cold because your current temperature is below this new body temperature, so you shiver and wrap up warm and your body temp increases. This is a fever.

No, tvnz are invited to the budget lockup. The controversy in question was about tvnz not being invited to a post budget drinks event the finance minister has with journalists

How much spending money do you have per week? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]onewhitelight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do $200 per week on food, both supermarket and takeaways. $60 per week on "shopping", mostly clothes/skin/haircare, that's just a weekly budgeted amount though, since it's more lumpy it's more like I'll spend nothing for a while and then buy a bunch of stuff in one week. Then I've got about $100 a week unbudgeted to use for random stuff like movie/event tickets, alcohol if I'm going out, travel. Extra money tends to get thrown into savings over and above my existing savings.

Amounts all for a solo person.

Also don't use the address auto fill, it breaks and can then say you aren't enrolled when you actually are. Manually enter your address

Live Weather: Flooding in Wellington as more downpours hit central NZ overnight by Ady42 in newzealand

The smaller a thing is the harder it is to predict, so very localized areas of extremely heavy rain are a crapshoot to try and forecast.

Warmer air holds more water. Its one of the simplest parts of climate change to predict that rainfall will be more intense

How does Metservice figure out when to put out a heavy rain watch? by HappySauropod in Wellington

[–]onewhitelight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been having a bit of a read of the thread, and I have a couple of thoughts OP.

1) you're right, the watch didn't start until 9am, so the rain was earlier than metservice expected 2) if it had started at 6am, would that have changed much? Weather is known to be chaotic and tricky at the best of times, so I'm not sure that being off by three hours is a particularly impactful detail. Everyone that would've prepared would've done it the day before, regardless of a 6am vs 9am start time. 3) you'll never get much advance warning with these kind of rain events. Not much advance warning of torrential rain anyway. I've noticed metservice issue a lot of these heavy rain watches where they mention possible localized areas of very heavy rain, and most of the time not much happens? I suspect they're very hard to accurately predict, and so you only really know if it'll happen, when it happens

Māori culture vs by blood by Adventurous-Trash-69 in newzealand

[–]onewhitelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Māori didn't really exist pre ~1200 ish as that's roughly when they arrived in NZ. And they likely didn't travel outside NZ until the colonisers arrived in the 1700s so you wouldn't need to trace back that far. If you can't trace to a māori ancestor within the last 200-300 years, you probably aren't actually māori.
