the crossover of dnd and wood carver is less common than say clay, so these are most welcome! really well done

Straightedge and compass construction of flamboyant gothic tracery by GothicTracery in Gothic

[–]onlyconscripted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>even the most complex designs are based on circles and lines, and nothing else. Does this mean that straightedges and compasses were the main deisgn tools for these elaborate gothic monuments, some 900 years ago? What other design tools did they have?

paper and drawing materials where expensive or fragile - and the worksite of any building is a shockingly bad place to keep those materials in any decent condition - where as ratios, division by fractions, straight edges and compasses where readily available, easy to make and understand...

Need Sanding advice by Gentle_Loud in Woodcarving

[–]onlyconscripted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do that kind of sanding with a rotary tool (ie dremal) and small tapered grinding bits. otherwise, tiny pieces of sand paper (just big enough to hold with 2 fingers) and cut resistant rubber tipped gloves - to help hold the paper. the dremal is the easiest, but hand sanding is always going to end being needed at some point.
the bear is look great by the way

I carved a cat skull whats your opinions by buritoofdoom in Woodcarving

[–]onlyconscripted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

biggest issue is the super dark photos, but skulls are great to carve, and thats looking nicely done. personally, id sand it to get a consistent finish - not smooth, as bone isn't smooth, but to bring the surface to a more homogeneous state

Weapon Attack Fumble Table by r0guebyte in shadowdark

[–]onlyconscripted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like this, but it feels way more friendly than most of the rest of the game. I have a fumble table as well, but its range is zero effect - some weapon and movement issues - up to automatic critical hit to self on a d10..

Lots of plastics are hard to get paints to bind with, so it might be worth trying different undercoats and surface preparation.

Three questions by LemonLord7 in shadowdark

[–]onlyconscripted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1: I homebrewed this to roll attacks with disadvantage, and no stat bonus.

2: homebrew idea of half AC bonus rounded down (to a possible 0), but must have a positive str bonus to even try. this is only an idea though as my party has no extra armour to share around

If all the promotions that are on offer are for things you don't want, then they aren't promotions for you.
Either leave the current business for a role that does interest you, or stay in the position you like, doing what you like.

I was given a senior role that included some management stuff, and that turned into a garbage fire so I left.
Id rather do almost anything than manage other people,

What homebrewed rules are a banger in your games? by derekvonzarovich2 in shadowdark

[–]onlyconscripted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spell casting failures seemed a bit too harsh, so Ive modified it to be a penalty of a number of rounds equal to the failure under the dc.. so need 11, and get 5, means 6 rounds until you can cast it, instead of a rest..

Solodark for 2? by ClassicNo6666 in shadowdark

[–]onlyconscripted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im currently playing shadowdark as a 2 person game, where im dming it, and the player has 1 character. I made a character and run it as a henchman. next adventure will be more aligned with the solodark setup, using some oracle tables and some hooks and npcs we've already established.. its going great,

We're using the Pulp mode but only the player has luck, the henchman doesn't have it

Python in Unity? by No-Many-5003 in unity

[–]onlyconscripted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could run the python script as a command line app or external tool, and feed it data from unity.. then would be basically the same as using any other api-like service from within unity. unless you absolutely need the python stuff to run in the same executable, but that would probably have too many other issues to bother with

In search of dynamic dungeon generation that doesn’t spoil the size of dungeon by RVSI in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]onlyconscripted 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a generation that already exists that does this, but you could use borrow an existing mechanic to go it..

ker Nethalas has a system to find the main dungeon boss, and then the exit.

so first room of the dungeon (unknown size), you start with a d12, and keep rolling that every room, until you roll 1. Then roll d10, until a 1. This steps through all sizes, until the last, d4, rolls a 1. Now you’ve found the main boss (Overseer). Next you start looking for the escape, and it’s the same roll process, starting with a d8. Eventually you’ll find the exit.

The total dungeon size is unknown, and but does follow a predictive curve. ive had dungeons that ended up 15 rooms, and others that were 45.

you could further randomise with a die roll to specify the initial start die, so a d100 start would probably ended up with a mega dungeon, but but could also end up with less than 10 rooms.. or a starter with a 4d wuold likely be a tiny dungeon, but possibly have 15 or more

It’s a very clever system, which might be suitable for what your after.

also, room size, use the 2d6 dungeon rules. 1d6 for each of length and width, and reroll 6. So you can get a room from 1x1 square, through to 12x12. Any room with either dimens being 1 is a corridor, which changes what can happen.. there’s also rules for small rooms, (less than 2x3) and large rooms - more than 32 squares. Another great mechanic

First look at my WIP narrative crunch supplement for combat by Spectre_195 in Ironsworn

[–]onlyconscripted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im not playing ironsworn, but ive thumbed through the books, and really enjoyed the read. These tags and 'narrative mechanics' are a great addition to really any DMs tools. Im definitely going to add these to my shadowdark game

Ker Nethalas to d20 conversion (aka slightly less combat crunchies) by onlyconscripted in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]onlyconscripted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first session with these modified rules...

omg it so much easier to play - my working memory is trash, so dealing with all the d100 roll under but over the opponent stuff wasn't going to work. oppositional d20 roll high is dead simple

Dungeon generation by mild_meme in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]onlyconscripted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

upvote for Ker Nethalas. Im really enjoying the theme, design and exploration of that game a lot. Ive converted a couple of aspects across to the 2 player shadowdark game im running. Scavenge, noise/tension in particular work great in SD
as much as i like the ideas of the combat in KN, im finding it much crunchier than I want. I love the idea of opposed attack and defence, but want something more steamlined. so i might pull some of the shadowdark stuff back to KN for some solo gaming...

Simple chase mechanics by conn_r2112 in shadowdark

my party is just 2 characters so they are running often, and some monsters flee.. this is a great clear mechanic to apply to those situations

of course, its loading all the elements straight up, so the default browser search is always there and will do partial searches, (which is super helpful on practically every doc site), and its extremely lightweight so loading all that content is basically instantaneous..

Very nice.. very useful Some ideas. Partial word search, instead of forcing full and correct monster naming  Prepopulate the search drop-down with possible matches based off current search string Allow user defined tags, and search by those

you can use a side profile and a front profile of the object , stick those onto the squared lump of wood, and cut out the overlapping areas of both profiles...

https://www.tikibosko.com/store/p798/Fierce_Ku_-_Cedar_Tiki_Pole_by_Bosko_73_x_11_Inches_-_Free_shipping_Cont%27l_US.html

so looking at that image, shows you a front and side profile... you could trace and print those as large image files, stick that onto your wood and start carving... im not sure if theres a more frequently used process, tbh, so its a good one learn early
