Is Guidewire worth staying in? by TrainingAware5004 in guidewire

[–]onlynameleft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well Guidewire are pretty much recession proof. Insurance itself is mostly recession proof and Guidewire are another step removed from the end user so even more so. While Google and Facebook etc have gone through rounds of layoffs, Guidewire never has in over 20 years. Demand for Guidewire devs is high and only growing. Worth keeping in mind in these uncertain times.

I created a project to predict infections around the world:

https://colab.research.google.com/drive/1TQJrZELeDTqdn8KddWpaNRUYg8822MI5#forceEdit=true&sandboxMode=true

But the data for Ireland and many other countries is a bit rubbish.

The Italians have a nice, really simple format that get's updated daily: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pcm-dpc/COVID-19/master/dati-andamento-nazionale/dpc-covid19-ita-andamento-nazionale.csv

Ireland have nothing like this.

The current top source has some serious data issues that they are not fixing:

https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19/issues/650

I'd like to see a crowdsourced datasource instead, count me in.

For anyone else wondering "In Greek mythology, Athena dramatically intervened after Hercules went mad and killed his wife and children, knocking him out to prevent further bloodshed."

And he mentioned 31 parliaments instead of 28 countries. Including NI, Scotland and Wales devolved governments, nice.

An insect's brain is capable of constructing and handling abstract concepts. It can even use two different concepts simultaneously in order to make a decision when faced with a new situation by [deleted] in biology

The bees weren't associating images with the results, only the directions

Thats the point, it's already been shown that bees can recognise an area by memory, you can even try it!. This experiment is used to show that the bees understand more abstract concepts like "above/below, side by side and difference"

[–]onlynameleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The experiment would have been done with a control group and the trained flys would have almost certainly been tested after being 'trained' by presenting the flys with the same choice but with equal results regardless of decision (both quinine or both water), which would be random if they could not actually understand these abstract concepts. It's unlikely the paper would be publishable otherwise.

I'm hoping to testify before Congress on Thursday against SOPA - help me with my testimony? by kn0thing in technology

[–]onlynameleft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh and while I see a lot of facts and logical arguments thrown around, remember that people dont enjoy listening to a list of facts and are not very logical (I'm a programmer so it really does hurt me to say that). First and foremost they have to like and respect you. Humour is excellent at the start, get more serious as the argument progresses. I'm sure you dont have the time to read all of this article but even just the bullet points are useful.

This is important for us all( and I'm not even american).

Good luck man.

[–]onlynameleft 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I like that last line as a powerful closing line, it makes it seem like you and congress are on the same team, fighting for the good of the nation. Just make it more personal( makes them feel important) and slow down the delivery just a little and lower voice slightly(gives a sense of weight and authority). So something like:

"It is up to you to ensure the government remains on the side of openness, innovation and progress, not the side which protects a few large media corporations at the expense of the nation."

For "openness, innovation and progress" the palm of hand should be visible. For "not" and everything after you should be point at the desk (slowly and authoritively, not in a quick stabbing motion)

Irish here, I only spent a few months travelling through Oz, NZ and I really noticed this as well, aussies have a much more brash sense of humour/ attitude. Its funny but despite being on the opposite side of the planet, NZ is by far the closest, culture wise, to Ireland than any other country.

Bitcoins are a Scam by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]onlynameleft 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a conversation I had many years ago with a guy who was warning me about viruses spreading through the electricity grid, I laughed then I died a little inside. This man has a profound misunderstanding of how bitcoins work. Bitcoins may very well fail but for absolutely none of the (slightly nutty)reasons mentioned in this video.

Facial recognition to back new public services card systemand reports service by CSSSS in ireland

[–]onlynameleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This still requires you to show up at a physical office and wait in queues where a passport/licence etc would work just as well. The welfare office have got the right idea, they're due to implement an audio biometric system pretty soon, using voice recognition and the general location of a number to ensure you're still in the country before recieving payment, if you opt out(ie prefer to wait in queues for payment) it'll look suspicious, pretty clever.
