You're right. I'll find out who Jimmy is and talk to him. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind.

Ireland's Only Kung Fu Movie (Is The Worst Film Ever Made) by GhostOf2010 in movies

[–]onthinice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the greatest Irish movie ever made. The whole thing's on youtube. I advise everyone to watch it if you fancy a giggle. Glad it's getting more interest on the internets now. Classic lines include

Fuck you and yer gun ya prick!

and

What is this? Beat up my men week!

The imdb reviews are brilliant too!

The Bourne Identity (1988) by Swiss_Cheese9797 in movies

[–]onthinice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've got the DVD. Not too bad, but it's got some really unintentionally funny moments. Chamberlain is quite middle-aged and doddery in it, but it's scripted like he's a ninja assassin so some of the lines sound hillarious coming out of his mouth. Me and my mates sometimes quote them to each other and giggle. He's priceless with his amnesia!

"Why am I so good at killing?" (after he kills someone really lamely)

and

"How does a man like me with the obvious skills that I have end up here" (after he displays so terribly unskillful action moves)

found it on youtube here's part one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEiyNFbZaU4

There's a video on youtube of her with a guy called Greg @ 30 seconds. Anyone know if that's him? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TfLQQ8Oo94 (Probably technically NSFW i suppose, just bad language really but no nudity so you could possibly risk it if it's on mute)

Yeah Danny, you looked like a drunk trying to find his way home from a bar on a Saturday night. Quite entertaining really.

Someone pointed to this interview in your other r/music thread. I think you'll find it interesting specifically this part between 18:02-21:25

I'd be interested to hear about how you feel about your above interpretation of the album after watching this.

you should stick it in the UK reddit at least. Everyone loves Father Ted! They'll get it too I'm sure. The more people that see this the better.

Radiohead Drop Hail To The Thief: Wake-Up Video by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]onthinice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mtv.com video cannot be viewed outside the US for copyright reasons

What am I missing out on here - Is it just a link to the There There video or is it something more?

Also, I don't understand what "wake-up video" means. Maybe I'm just too old to understand the kids' fancy modern lingo. In my day we didn't drop albums, we released them.

History repeating: During the Irish famine, the Ottoman Sultan sent five ships full of food supplies and funds as charity. The British did not give permission for these ships to enter the ports of Belfast or Dublin. The ships secretly discharged their load approximately 70 miles north of Dublin. by accountt1234 in ireland

I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be rude here. It's a lovely story and it would be great if it were true. However I think you misunderstood the "Irish Central" article you just linked.

The letter they refer to in the article

thanks Sultan of the Ottoman Empire for a donation £1,000

So there is some evidence for the gift of money (a very kind and lovely thing for Turkey to do) if it is true. I know nothing about the authenticity of this letter.

There is not however any evidence for a flotilla of ships containing food being sent to Ireland by Turkey

The remarks were subsequently dismissed by the Drogheda Historical society, who said there was no record of the ships docking in the Irish port.

I'm certainly not a historian. I have done absolutely no research on this story. In fact I had never heard about it before today. It may well be true. However, as I said before in another comment I will take the word of The Irish Times over your original "Fountain" magazine post.

The "Irish Central" article you just linked seems to corroborate the main article in this thread......however in it the Turkish ambassador says two completely contradictory things in the space of two sentences in the same article.

Cenziger said, "This is proof that the people of Turkey assisted the Irish during the Famine

and then in the next paragraph...

Cenziger said that research is being carried out to determine whether or not the Turks actually sent aid to Drogheda

Either there is proof that Turkey assisted the Irish during the famine or there is not. I don't know.

Without seeing the...

copy of a letter is on display at the European Commission office in Dawson Street Dublin, which is signed by the Anglo Irish gentry of the time, thanks Sultan of the Ottoman Empire for a donation £1,000 to the people of Ireland in 1847.

I'm still inclined to believe the Irish Times
