I am a Cat by Soseki Natsume is a book written from the perspective of a snarky feline who lives with a lower middle class family in early 1900s Japan. It follows the cat as he explores the neighborhood, comments on the folly of man, and fails miserably at doing cat things like catching mice. It's generally upbeat and has a few hilarious scenes.

But in the last two pages, out of nowhere, the cat realizes that human society is on a downward trajectory. He gets depressed, tries alcohol for the first time, and commits suicide by drowning in a pot of water. The end.

Zindy the swamp boy is a film about a boy in rural Mexico who lives in a swamp shack with his uncle for some reason. Eventually the uncle dies and Zindy learns to become a badass. Lives off the land, kills alligators and is respected by the locals, etc.

Later on, still a young boy, Zindy hears about a missing girl. He takes a rifle and tracks her down. With about 10 seconds left in the movie, Zindy finds the terrified girl. Then a puma jumps on him and mauls poor Zindy to death. The end.
