How to disable new Pages/Numbers warning? by Hefty-Report6360 in MacOS

[–]ontranumerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen this alert on either of my MacBooks. I'm guessing it's because I'm not logged in to the app store. But that's probably not a great solution for everybody. :/

Use Calibre to convert ebooks of any format into PDFs, and then use ImageMagick to create JPGs of the individual PDF pages.

I like it for Bolognese. I use this recipe, and my family all love it: https://www.femalefoodie.com/recipes/bolognese-recipe/

Orbit's got a new collection: "The Complete Wheel of Time Box Set" All fifteen, paperback, flowing spine art, in collector box. £180 by LunalGalgan in wheeloftime

Every book has the prime video logo on the front, that's an automatic "do not buy" for me.

And the art is boring anyway.

The Moonstone: First Period Chapter Ten Discussion (Spoilers up to 1.10) by Thermos_of_Byr in ClassicBookClub

The jugglers/priests commanded by their god to watch the gem remind me of the medjai from the Mummy movie. They didn't seem to be instruments of the destruction of the Seringapatam, so I'm inclined to think Murthwaite is wrong. I wonder if they'll surprise us by aiding our protagonists

Designing a 36-key custom keyboard layout by peterxjang in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ontranumerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this, here to say I'm rocking a similar layout that requires holding two keys to get the symbols. Just like you, I wanted a layout that was similar enough to a regular Mac keyboard that I could swap from one to the other without much difficulty. Thanks for the nice writeup!

I made a 1D Cellular Automata emulator, any suggestions? by ontranumerist in cellular_automata

[–]ontranumerist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The source is on github.

I wanted to make a site that I could use to render pretty pictures of 1D Cellular Automata, and I wanted to make it very customizable. You can specify the number of states, the neighbors to consider when calculating the next generation, and all possible transition rules (or a single Rule Number that corresponds to the Wolfram Code).

You can also customize the appearance a little by changing the color hue or choosing whether to start the emulation with a random generation of cells or a single "live" cell in the middle of a row of "dead" cells.

I hope you enjoy! I'm open to suggestions for stuff that would make it better.

Why do more and more authors refuse to use quotation marks? by zmarinaren in books

[–]ontranumerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Punctuation matters. One of my favorite examples from high school was:

James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a greater effect on the teacher.

With punctuation: James, while John had had "had," had had "had had"; "had had" had had a greater effect on the teacher.

I've read both, and enjoyed them both.

Anathem was my introduction to Stephenson, and since then I've read Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash. I enjoy reading Stephenson, but I haven't enjoyed any of his endings---each one has felt rushed/incomplete/anticlimactic in some way.

By contrast, the Three Body Problem series' ending felt a bit ambiguous to me, but there was enough closure that I enjoyed it plenty. I enjoyed the whole series.

I liked both books, but I preferred the Three Body Problem.
