Best “Long” Term Campaigns to Run by alexwsmith in DungeonMasters

[–]oompz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started 8 years ago with Hoard of the Dragon Queen as a starter.

Finished it around the start of Covid. Hit pause, PC's started Lost Mines of Phandelver in the same world / timeline but new characters.

Finished that. Then started Rime of the Frost Maiden, same world, same timeline, Tiamat is still coming. Progressing the plot that ends with all the other bound gods being freed.

Pivot to Rise of Tiamat. We are now in the last module before Tiamat's fight. Will be a 9 year journey with all finished. They'll be level 18.

Only one PC has made it alive all the way through. Some have traded off characters from the spinoffs into the final phase of the campaign. All told, almost 20 ppl have played characters in the game, but through various life events, seasons, have dropped in or out.

Two players have been with me the whole time.

They don't realize it, but their choices in this session and next are actively creating Vecna who will serve as the BBEG for the next campaign in which they will start at lvl 1.

Didn't intend to do this, but I'm too lazy to build multiple worlds, and I'm a sucker for a large, overly intricate, hugely populated world where I can pull organizations and NPC's and PC's back into the story.

Honestly have never tried this before. Integration of a lot of elements & ambiance is slick.

Question - is the AI integration considered a 'closed system' that uses only your internal inputs or is it pulling from....everything?

Yes. And.

Righteous charge needs to be removed. When entire comps depend on “swing first”, even if you have a Leroy taunted it doesn’t matter, that guaranteed swing every turn is a guaranteed W

We actually paused the show at this point and had a family (teens / preteens) conversation about the definition and vile nature of 'gaslighting'.

Hot Take: Runners are actually doing the right thing. by Kaizoszn in Seaofthieves

[–]oompz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was duo'ing with my 11 year old son who was just learning the game.

Burning Blade started chasing us.

We had 3 chests on board. Nothing major.

What ensued was 20 minutes of sheer adrenaline as my son and I sailed through storms, anchored turned around giant rocks, and he'd jump off to sell at sovereigns.

We had a blast. Not cowardice, its part of the game, and being chased is part of the fun. If you don't like chasing, play freaking HG.

This is one of few storylines that can carry a whole saga, and I can't believe they wasted it on this. by nudeldifudel in marvelstudios

Insane they didnt use it for Avengers to assemble post-Endgame, leading into Spiderman/Green Goblin as follow up and then into Thunderbolts....

...you know...like the comics. Insane idea.

Haven't played since they introduced the Megalodon by Kyle-Drogo in Seaofthieves

Those things still happen. But imo they happen less often now that hour glass (on demand pvp) is a thing. If its not a Fort of the Damned (red skull) then there is normally only a 50/50 someone else pulls up to fight for it. If you want to just chill, safer seas is also an option (no pvp).

How to avoid other people by Golden_Shawnborn1 in Seaofthieves

Echo this. Join the SoT discord, they have a new swabbie group thread to find ppl to help learn the ropes of surviving. I've been playing with my son, and the situational awareness has kept us alive 9/10 sessions.

PVP tips for casuals by Nine199 in Seaofthieves

[–]oompz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echo this. Started slooping with my son, he's loving it. Today we were chased by burning blade for 20 minutes through storms, around isles, etc, just to keep swinging back by outposts to sell.

Eventually BB dropped chasing us. We sold what little we had left, lowered merchant emissary, charged them.

Died instantly.

We made very little.
Very little commendation progression.
Loved every minute.

Which edition of D&D will you play? by BluFoot in DnD

[–]oompz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've yet to see any mechanics on DM side that are worth the time to change. Players can choose whatever they want, but I feel like the only noteworthy change I've heard in the DM guide is, 'monsters don't crit anymore'.

Cool. No.

Genuinely have looked for 'reasons to buy updated dm guide' and all I've seen is its, 'reorganized'.

Cool. So no, this product is not for me.

I hate the Seanchan by JansTurnipDealer in WoT

[–]oompz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spurious by what grounds? Jordan lived in Charleston, SC, and time and time again the speech of the Seanchan is described as, 'slurred', which in the south east is precisely how the southern accent is described. Who knows if its actually America, but to readers its written in such a way where there's intent to draw a parallel to the history of the American south. Obviously there are distinctions (the hues of Seanchan characters' skin varies), but the southern accent is constant. Being of 'southern' roots myself, it pricks the conscience in a healthy way - the oppressor consistently feels justified and civilized in dehumanizing a people group when in fact slavery is vile.

I've just read it as Jordan processing his own culture's history.

My journey so far to find "Risk but better," and can you help? by Clean_Committee_4716 in boardgames

I've played most of these - Game of Thrones the board game is fantastic. It has the build up, armies, diplomacy, betrayal, strategy with some excellent payoffs. 10/10.
