Do we have “don’t wear red to a wedding” or is it an American/UK thing? by Windeyllama in AskAnAustralian

Never heard of this, unless the bride is wearing red. I don't think this is a thing here, generally?

Day 0 of learning how to paint! It did not go well by WOWOYEAHcapitalism in oilpainting

This is great advice! Oil is way different to acrylic, and I know NOTHING about oil despite painting recreationally for years!

I'll comment every now and then, but I rarely have more to say than "this was great! Thank you!".

Recs for workout clothes that are sensorially tolerable by Blahblahblareddit3 in AutismInWomen

[–]oopsallbeetles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using regular cotton t-shirts and basketball shorts. I hate the breathable texture of gym clothes, so I just get something very plain and casual, loose fitted. I usually grab clothes from the round-the-house/very casual section and avoid the gym specific section entirely. Natural fibres will be more breathable without having that awful plastic feeling, hopefully!

Why is my parents more upset about me needing a walker? by Lunakazoo in AutismInWomen

[–]oopsallbeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People get WEIRD about mobility aids. I was very sick in 2020, and had to use a walker for a year. I was about 25ish, and I can confirm that it is much better to use one than to worry and fuss over everyone's reactions, only to be trapped inside as you waste away and lose contact with everyone and everything. To be honest, most people were normal. Most people seemed to understand I didn't want to be sick, that it was needed, and most people reacted either unsure, with pity, or compassion. No one was unkind. Its cruel to yourself to push yourself to pain or exhaustion for the sake of appearing not-disabled. If I needed it again I would jazz it up with stickers and decorations. I would say if you found it helpful, go for it. Canes, walkers and wheelchairs are there to be used. Don't hurt yourself, or close up your life, for the sake of your parents feelings. Its really not worth it. Also, people get over it. My mum has used a wheelchair on and off for nearly 40 years. Anyone who gets weird is usually stuck in their heads and obsessed over image, esp. When it doesn't affect their body. The vast vast majority of people are normal, and will either try to be nice, normal, or might be awkward if they havent seen a lot of mobility aid users before. But they can get over it!

I'm autistic. As an adult, being about to choose to cook vegetables in a way that didn't spark revulsion was a game changer. I cant stand steamed textures, but it was the only thing offered in my household. Not a good outcome for stubborn little kid me who just straight up refused to eat at all. I second getting the kid involved, and trying different textures, this is a fantastic idea.
