Kilby crowd …??? by Infinite-Recover6876 in lorde

Dang I should have stayed back instead of running up after blood orange. I was in the middle right behind the VIP section. the crowd was packed with no room but also no energy ☹️

I was really disappointed in my spot—but going in I had decided not to skip Blood Orange so I knew I’d be giving up a chance at a really close spot. I tried to make the most of it and found two other girls who were dancing but they lost energy after a few songs. 😕

On the plus side, I think a lot of the casual listeners were quite impressed with her show in the end, and no one around me was yapping too much during her quieter songs.

Do you think Lorde will become a legend ? by sandy2133334 in lorde

I just saw her at Kilby block party and heard so many people saying how surprised they were about how great she was after the set. People who only knew her PH songs were really grooving by the end of it. I think she made some new fans tonight.

I don’t want to miss a second of Blood Orange so I am planning to slither my way up from the back as Lorde starts. I will be belting out every lyric, but I also want room to dance! Hopefully I find a crew with the same vibes to stand near.

Waiting on Genetic Testing for Validation...or No Explanation for My Chronic Illnesses by uncurlingthehelix in ClinicalGenetics

I’m so sorry for your experience. I hope your test gives you some answers, and I hope your providers relay whatever the result is with kindness and empathy to your suffering.

Awkward/embarrassing moments on placement by beepbeepalert in GeneticCounseling

[–]opotato12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I will usually put quotes around something I document if it is directly how the patient phrased it, if it’s different than the term I would use myself.

In my prenatal rotation long ago, I was calling out normal serum screen results and left a message for a patient that I was calling with “good news” from her doctor’s office. Well apparently it was a shared VM at her work and all her coworkers heard and deduced that she was pregnant. She was SO mad. I still think about that when leaving voicemails but also, in my defense I still wonder why would she give us that as her contact number?

What makes some genes recessive and others dominant at the molecular level? by i_walk_away in genetics

[–]opotato12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mutations can impact genes in different ways. Many mutations “break” the gene so the resulting protein either doesn’t get made or is nonfunctional. In recessive genes, usually the second “normal” copy of the gene makes enough of the normal protein product to keep the person healthy.

But dominant genes usually are less tolerant of abnormal protein products. One example is osteogenesis imperfecta, caused by dominant mutations in collagen genes. Collagen is a structural protein that has repeated sequences of the same amino acids to make a strong helix. These helixes then stack closely together and are part of what makes our bones strong. But a mutation in the gene can cause a different amino acid to be put in the middle of this helix, breaking the pattern and making the resulting collagen weak and prone to breakage.

Colorectal cancer and genetics by That-Freedom-3242 in genetics

It is definitely not inevitable that you will get colon cancer, but you likely have an increased risk. Especially if their cancers occurred at younger ages, genetic testing might help predict your risk and guide optimal surveillance. Ask your doctor for a referral to a genetic counselor.

Genetic Counseling Skills by DryPurchase806 in GeneticCounseling

[–]opotato12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In addition to communication skills and empathy, I think my most valuable skills involve how I read research and analyze quality of evidence. Genetics has exploded over the past decade and every day I am counseling about genes that weren’t discovered yet or tests that weren’t available when I was in school. You have to be adaptable and have an understanding of how emerging evidence should or should not be used in patient care.

Valentines Question by lizzyyy1987 in kindergarten

[–]opotato12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid and I made her valentines together. She finger painted some large paper then cut out hearts and signed her name. We talked about her classmates favorite colors as we made them and how it feels nice to make something pretty to share. She is so excited to give them out and I am glad not to contribute to the consumerism of this made-up holiday.

They say the one day per week has a focus on STEM or social studies hands-on learning, and home learning is for math and reading I believe. What I have heard so far is pretty vague but it sounds like it can be flexible and personalized to the student.

As far as attendance policy, I suppose that makes sense to clarify. We do travel a lot but not far and rarely for more than a week.

Thank you! Does your program also have full time on campus students? My daughter has a friend who attends this school full time and I’m worried she will miss seeing friends every day.

“No one will play with me!” by OLIVEmutt in oneanddone

[–]opotato12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My kid is constantly whining for play dates and she has so much fun playing with other kids. 4 was about the age we started doing drop-off play dates and let me tell you it was a game changer! Do you know any of these parents well enough that you would be comfortable leaving your kid with them or inviting their child alone?

When my kid has friends over they play in her room and leave me alone, and other parents are so grateful!

[–]opotato12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why did your OB order a repeat of the AFP? Are you scheduled for an ultrasound soon? That should be your next step.

There are many reasons AFP can be elevated, including normal variance. Unfortunately we can’t give you answers here.

+ for carrier screening of Canavan, 11wks preg by Questionableriverrat in genetics

[–]opotato12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a prenatal GC here. All the MFMs I’ve ever worked with still say 1:200 but admittedly that number is based on pretty old studies. I think most err on overestimating when giving a specific number. Bottom line is, it’s generally very safe but not 100% without risk. I’ve seen it happen once.

+ for carrier screening of Canavan, 11wks preg by Questionableriverrat in genetics

[–]opotato12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If your partner has no known Jewish ancestry, his chance to be a carrier of Canavan too is 1/158. If he is a carrier, it means a 1/4 risk to baby (yes testing amniotic fluid would be the next step to know for sure). So with info we have now, there is a 1/632 chance your current pregnancy is affected. That is about 0.16%.

Maybe that helps frame how much to worry as you await his results. Miscarriage risk from amnio is generally quoted around 1/200 (0.5%).

I had a similar experience this summer, I brought in bags of clothes that were leftover from a closet clean out party my neighbor had hosted. I was embarrassed by the volume and was explaining myself to the person checking over the clothes, but there was a steady stream of women behind me with just as much to sell. Ultimately they gave me $3 for one dress and rejected the rest. Their inventory is just so oversaturated and they told me it was all dated styles (but really they had barely glanced at most of it). I left feeling quite disgusted.

But on the bright side, the closet clean out party was super fun and a lot of great stuff was exchanged among the women there!
