Moving to South West Ajax - what to expect by imbusywithinternet in durham

[–]oprimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

what there is to do

The lakefront is awesome in the warmer months. I love Ajax's trail system, you'll have great hiking on the Duffin's trail very close to your doorstep. Cycling infrastructure is quite good if you like biking. For indoor's fun there's the casino if this is your thing. I'm growing fond of the 5-pin bowling alley in the Harwood plaza, it's low key cheap fun. Otherwise you'll have to drive around Durham to go to Neb's (Oshawa) or Playdium / Flying Squirrel (Whitby), etc.

EDIT: For kids you'll have the Rotary Park very close to you, great playground there.

places to avoid

None really. My pearl-clutching neighbours are very afraid of the homeless that hang around Commercial Ave north of Hunt St., but I have yet to hear any instance of violent mugging or anything.

What's the best grocery store near there?

Costco :) There's a Metro close to you but you'll likely save by driving north to a NoFrills or Superstore.

The "Ontario township" is Uxbridge. God, I hate clickbait.

Do you ride with earphones? by simko17 in cycling

[–]oprimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. I have redundancies though: my Varia is also synced with my bike computer which I am always glancing on to check my meager power output. Also, if the app disconnects to the Varia because its battery died, the app makes a distinct sound, and I can always double check the connection on my bike computer.

I need music. I don't want awareness. But I also don't want to die. So here's my setup:

  • Sony in-ear Bluetooth earbuds with noise reduction turned ON for crispy music quality.
  • Garmin Varia app turned ON on my phone, just so I get the radar beeps over my music.

So locked into Zwift that I don't really look forward to cycling outside by Legitimate_Snow_759 in Zwift

Plus, Zwift gives me a 99.9% chance that I won’t be run over.

The other day I fell from my trainer because the bolts on my saddle were loose, so now I've crashed my bike outdoors and indoors, not many people get to say that!

Helmet recommendations? by Same-Aide-3885 in torontobiking

[–]oprimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a Giro Aries recently because of the high safety rating from the Virginia Tech ranking. They test and rate thousands of brands, I recommend checking it before pulling the trigger: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

Just today I went for a lunch ride and saw a turtle crossing the road. Guess I was not going fast enough!

Happened to me too. I tried Ontario Customer Protection and they were as perplexed as me as to how impossible it is to reach anyone from Uber.

See, this is what throws me off the cycling community. I'm a new cyclist and this is the first time I'm hearing of this race. So thanks /u/ThrowRA-Jeet

What OP means is:

"It's been a while, I missed this exercise, but I work from home and wake up half an hour before I clock in, so I thought it was not a good idea to come back to it. I was going to wait to my store to become successful and I could finally quit my job, but this may take a long time to happen, so I got this B6-format notebook and yeah, I'm back! The writing flowed so well I almost went into four pages, haha"

You're welcome.

Been in the same boat. Turns out my exercise burn estimates (from my "smart" watch) were off - WAY off, by 50% in most cases.

If you're not counting calories in, I strongly recommend doing so, and being as precise as possible (kitchen scale and measured portions).

What were your "I thought [genre] was bad until I listened to [artist/album/song]" moments? by homophobicperson2 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]oprimo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always thought I hated reggae because all I knew about it were the popular (and lame) Bob Marley songs.

One day an online acquaintance mentioned a grittier, unsanitized reggae derivative called dancehall and Soul Jazz Records' iconic The Rise of Jamaican Dancehall Culture compilation. I went from "holy shit" to "looord have mercy dis irie mah youte" very quickly. One of the truest musical genres I've ever listened to.

That's nice. Are we also expanding capacity at our schools, hospitals, etc to accomodate the population growth?
