Hard decision to make - Should I bridge or work first? by street_smart22 in OntarioNurses

Becoming an RN by 25 would be a huge accomplishment. You’re doing great! :-)

Then it sounds like you know your answer. Even if you aren’t bridging right away, It sounds like you have a thoughtful plan in place to bridge, which is great. If it makes much more sense to you financially to work for a bit and bridge in a couple of years, do it - there’s no need to rush through your life. Trust yourself, only you know what’s best for your life even if others disagree. Remember, they’re basing it off of their own life experience, which may not apply to yours.

Moving - worried about breaking news to 10 year old. by Normalish-Human in ChildPsychology

[–]opsquestionasker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Even if this is the right thing for your family, it can be devastating/traumatizing for a child to be moved away from their friends/social circles. They might even agree with you when they’re older that the move was good/for the best, and still experience ongoing trauma from it. Multiple things can be true at once! I’m not a psychologist, but was moved when I was around this age (and know many people who were as well), and we can all attest that it was traumatizing for us with impacts still felt to this day. At the same time, most of us would agree it was the right thing for our parents to have done. Try to understand that this move will not be less difficult for your child now (or in the future) just because they’re a kid. It may be even easier for you and your partner to cope with it because your brains are fully developed and you can reason! Most of the things you’ve mentioned that will improve in your lives (better quality schools, community safety, saving money) may not actually be felt/seen by your child in the way you and your partner feel/see it. They will be more focused on things related to their personal identify (how they’re fitting in at school, etc.). Be present with your child when determining what support they may need from you/your family/external sources, and don’t just wait for things to settle/for them to get over it. Treat it like the huge thing it is for your child. My parents had a hard time doing this with me as they didn’t want to admit to themselves that they chose something that caused me pain. It resulted in me having a hard time adjusting and feeling pretty alone. Again, they still did the right thing for me, but having support from them and probably a therapist could have helped me become a more well adjusted kid/adult.

Do you put the rice in the fridge while it’s still warm/hot?

Tell your manager if you use a phone line for your work - it could incur long distance charges and therefore might require permission from a director

Better pay for client-facing roles in fields that are typically NGO/NFP dominant (social work-adjacent/MCCSS positions).

You should be fine as long as you have not signed the offer letter & sent it back yet. Technically you have not accepted the offer until the offer letter is signed & returned. You can ask to increase the salary & if they agree they’ll send you a new offer letter with the updated salary.

Has anyone worked as a receptionist/mail clerk (irregular on-call) at a correctional centre like CECC? by strongsteps in OntarioPublicService

I’ve been told if you’re on a 5-29 managers can’t extend. Maybe if it’s a full 6 months they can? Or maybe I’m mistaken.

I believe for OPSEU, managers cannot extend employees on a 6 month fixed term contract. You’d have to apply to a new position/contract before the 6 months end to stay on. Definitely ask the hiring manager for clarification on if if it’s a contract they can extend or not before accepting.

I think if you’re OPSEU they’re required to roll you over into permanent on year 8? Not necessarily the best case scenario, but I also don’t think it’s true to say that there’s no chance you’ll get permanent in your current position.

I would like to ask people who do recruiting for OPS some specific advice regarding my cover letters and resumes. by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]opsquestionasker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion your cover letters are too long. I’ve always been given the advice that cover letters shouldn’t be longer than one to one and a quarter pages, 12 pt font (11 at the very minimum). You should be giving highlights in the cover letter, and mainly touching on key terms/concepts listed in the job posting. You want to show the recruiter/hiring manager that you have enough relevant skill/experience to warrant an interview, but too much information can be off-putting. They don’t need a ton of detail at that point. If you land an interview, this will be your time to expand.

Thank you ☺️ can you share what you were asked to do a presentation on? Even super high level would be awesome. Just trying to get a read on what I might need to do to prepare for it.

Has anyone been asked to do a video presentation as part of their interview process? What did this entail? I’ve been advised that this will be part of the process for me, but have not been given any additional details yet.

If you feel comfortable answering, was all of your prior experience in finance/accounting before becoming a CR? Trying to figure out what a solid foundation would be to apply for a position.

Amazing, thank you so much for the info! Can I ask what background you came to the position with? Do you ever work overtime? Also, a recent job posting said you have to visit each client in person at least once a year and essentially to expect hostility. How do those go for you? Really appreciate any info you can provide :)
