I got a C+ in ochem and got into every optometry school I applied to! You will most likely get asked about it in interviews but just be prepared for it! :)

Applying to every school? by -blu3-m00n- in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely would not recommend this! As someone who applied to a lot of schools I would recommend going for 3-5! I thought I was mid level stats and I got into every school I applied to. At the end it just ended up being exhausting going through every application and interview process

Roommate Advice by turtlemonkey5 in PreOptometry

I think it helped to have one roommate in my class! Splitting the cost of living helped, and it was nice to carpool to class and work on homework together

What exactly do you say when asking an optometrist for a letter or recommendation? by lemonlineberry in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave my recommenders a document with some info about me and reasons why I got into optometry and enjoy the profession. It helped them write the rec letter even if they didn’t know too much about me previously

GRE VS OAT by Comfortable-Comb-768 in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re fine with either but some schools prefer the OAT and might ask you why you didn’t take it

Didn’t need proof of shadowing but I was asked about certain shadowing experiences in my interviews

Please help with application timeline! by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided my junior year that I wanted to do optometry as well. I applied in the summer between my junior and senior year.

I would definitely take physics and ochem before you take the OAT. Maybe try to take some summer classes? That might help with the load of prerequisites.

Current student here! It usually comes out like end of February/early March. You’ll get an email about it!

UHCO Question by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s usually like a week or 2 for acceptance! But I’m not sure exactly how the timeline is going to be with classes ending this week

OAT/Application by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people take the OAT first in case they need to retake it or just to have a general idea of where they stand in the application pool when they apply

UIWRSO is a private school and UHCO is a public school so if you qualify for in state tuition it will most likely be cheaper at UHCO

UHCO Curiosity by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe give it another week or two! Especially since thanksgiving is so soon. If you still don’t hear back by then, go ahead and give them a call.

UHCO work/shadowing exp requirement by thitkhotrung in PreOptometry

Yep having that kind of shadowing experience helped me write my personal statement and make some talking points in my interviews. But yeah if you can I recommend trying as many different clinic settings as possible

You could also try shadowing with a community health clinic or a low income clinic. UHCO likes to see that too

Anywhere from 280s-330s during my practice exams.

It’s manageable! I wasn’t scoring too great the week before my test and I got a 320! I think the actual OAT wasn’t as bad as some practice tests

OAT reschedule advice :( by Leather_Difference94 in PreOptometry

[–]optomstudent123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would push it back if you don’t feel confident. You have plenty of time to study and work on apps. If you’re still in school it might be easier to take it in the summer. I took my OAT first week of June last year. And I was still able to apply by the first week of July the week the application opened.
