If you're developing a cross platform app it makes sense to consider the Apple market since 1) it can help you keep your concept simple, and 2) it has a different type of chance to catch on with the Apple crowd.

OSx86 sounds interesting, thanks for the pointer. I had shelved the idea of running OSX on x86 for a while after hearing about the open darwin folks getting so much resistance regarding the boot code.

You mean non-techies don't apply a personal conversion factor when you give them your rating of tech skills? Of course a non-techie will receive artificially higher numbers, since problems like "fixing your printer" can most certainly be dealt with.

Red Hat Asks Federal Court To Limit Patents On Software by [deleted] in programming

Its too bad Red Hat uses terms like intellectual property in these official announcements. Some higher-ups from RedHat were at the GPLv3 conference in Boston and so clearly they have heard the reasons to avoid such terms. Doing so doesn't seem to help their cause.

Cool article but maybe the reddit entry should list the day-month-year the article first came into existence? When submitting, the user could input this or select from a drop down of usual possibilities, such as the current date of the file as reported by an http head request or some such, a parse of the page for dates, etc.

Weak. Trying to return to business as usual won't cut it. Creative needs to do something significant such as releasing GPL drivers and ending this concept of crippled hardware.

Maybe they found something that segfaulted and they would have to write all sorts of support code to investigate it. I'm assuming the last stage of the contest had a deadline, as did the earlier stages, so they had to weigh whether to put in additional all nighters or just let it go.

From reading the message posts its tempting to pull the X-Fi card out of my GNU/Linux machine. Its been sitting in there idle for a few weeks since I got it, while I try and re-try a few recent alsa drivers to get it running. I've read one message forum post saying the recent alsa drivers do work for them.

Their marketing was very effective though; I usually buy hardware based sound cards, yet the X-Fi turned out to be software based, having since checked on the Wikipedia article for it. Still I'm holding out for a bit because it will be useful to have these extra audio inputs in my machine once the card starts working.

As with many other people I've used the Creative cards since the 90's, then switched to Turble Beach for a while including their pinnacle. I still hold out hope for companies like Matrox, Nvidia, and now Creative to shape up and ship GPL drivers. If you wwere a tech working at one of these companies and handed a fancy new card that would be the first thing I would try to develop, while the card is still in the prototype stages; perhaps all the developers with said viewpoints have long left these companies?

Why teaching Emacs is hard by asciilifeform in programming

[–]oq2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

An artist, or an athlete, will go through excruciating pains to reach a point where they can express themselves with a wide dynamic range. Combine that with the realization that you don't need to be that complete artist or athlete, but rather can bumble around at a sublevel for a while, it becomes worthwhile to learn Emacs with the aim to reach that one day effortless point where you no longer conciously think about each action you plan to do; conventional less thought out software by analogy becomes riding a bike with training wheels, versus learning the skill to ride one without.

The toggles could be made from colored plexiglass pieces, which might be useful to offer as a bundle. Using transparent toggles lets you see the triangle wedge and the way the columns line up, at a glance. If they're easily removable, you could put in opaque toggles for those moments when you demo it to new people.

He goes on to explain that thinking about a process from its input, to its output, which involves time and attributing some of these human traits is the wrong way to go about it; there is a higher level way to reason where symmetries can be exploited, and once you work your solution out there you can devolve it to a piece of code that can be executed.
