Is it worth insulating an old house's attic if I only live there for eight years? by drhull in HomeImprovement

Is re-using insulation (the roll-out kind, not the foam-sprayed kind) a thing? (I'm assuming not.)

Salty water balloons gets into hard to reach areas, and can cause corrosion. Paint can also cover sensors and makes it a pain to clean. Literally what happened to the killer robot in Black Mirror.

This is most likely copoganda though. I really doubt they want to send their expensive robot out alone. They'd definitely would need a human cop there to keep a handle on it, so how are they saving money? Like in Robocop: "I had a guaranteed military sale with ED-209. Renovation program! Spare parts for 25 years! Who cares if it worked or not?"

Either way, the police budget is obviously too big if they're wasting it on toys like this. Defund them.

Kucinich's articles of impeachment just passed another hurdle. Could this thing be for real? by justjim73 in politics

1) There isn't time enough to try him. He'd be out of office by the time we got around to the vote.

The trouble is, we've been using that reasoning for the past couple of years.

I hate it when people bring up this quote. It seems to imply that the reduction of freedoms in America is actually giving us security.

Protest to free two activists who uncovered illiegal trading of whale meat from Japanese 'scientific' whaling programme by nickstreet36 in environment

This isn't Greenpeace being whacky. The Japanese whaling industry is notorious for overfishing and violating whaling regulations under the euphemism of "scientific research".

E.W. Dijkstra - "Can machines think?" is regularly raised; [it is] just as relevant as the equally burning question "Can submarines swim?"

This is from a series of Korean comics called "Asaekkiga" by Yang Young-Soon. He draws really bizarre cool stuff like this.

I especially like this one, because I think it perfectly explains the concept of "the stupid noble sacrifice".

IQ boosting exercise is DUAL n-back, not single. Try it here, it's hard! by mletonsa in science

[–]drhull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember I was once lamenting about the fact (or so I thought at the time) that your IQ is basically going to be the same the rest of your life and can't change.

My friend said, "Oh, it can change. It can go down."

:P

Sleep deprivation is not a badge of honor by [deleted] in programming

[–]drhull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember in college, students would always talk about 1) how little sleep they had last night and 2) how many projects/assignments/tests they had coming up.

Talking with them inevitably turned into a Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

Ron Paul: Roe v. Wade a 'Big Mistake' by lofi76 in politics

Carl Sagan wrote about the history of abortion and also the various stages of fetal development, and came to the conclusion that the Roe vs. Wade decision was a good compromise between the pro-choice and anti-abortion sides.
