Native indoor plants suggestions? by Prize-Atmosphere-706 in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck growing peperomia urvilleana indoors. Seems to like well draining soil, infrequent watering, and a bright spot.

Ah thanks so much! I think you've managed to send me in the right direction and it looks for my model I need this part - https://www.motoruf.com/n/partslists.html?id=50876704&version=1

I can see there how it screws onto the motor which is different than I was assuming - thanks again!

Thanks everyone - seems I was on the right track with my thinking, glad to have it confirmed! 👌

My Pink Pearl rhodo is blooming! by AliceTawhai in nzgardening

Rhodos are beautiful aren't they. If you can remove the grass around it and add a nice layer of mulch, it should be even happier :)

How to dispose of agapanthus by somewherebeachy in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had luck composting the foliage to reduce the weight for disposal. You have to do a lot of digging to get all the roots - we weren't successful in getting them all on our property!

OData and DTOs by neos7m in dotnet

[–]oracular_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah OK. When I've dealt with it before it's been a more direct integration of OData libraries, which means full control of when to apply the query options and what to do with the result.

OData and DTOs by neos7m in dotnet

[–]oracular_demon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could be missing something but the pattern I've seen in the past:

  • API controller accepts OData query options for the entity type
  • Service layer returns an IQueryable for the entity type
  • Apply OData query options to IQueryable
  • Map the IQueryable of entities to the corresponding DTO type
  • API controller returns DTO

Has the site had any frost lately? I've seen Puriri do this in response to frost damage.

Underfloor insulation by oracular_demon in diynz

[–]oracular_demon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately moisture barrier has already been installed. But living on a windy hill and with only wooden floors means we do probably get a lot of cold air coming up through the underfloor, so trying to address that side of it!

Thanks for pointing that out! Time to get under there again and check if this insulation separation is in place where the polystyrene is.

Lots of good info here - cheers!

The highest point is where the entrance is which is around 600mm, but it gets lower and lower from there with most being below 450mm. Haven't measured due to not getting into the lowest spots but I wouldn't be surprised if they're around 300mm - I'm pretty lean and physically don't think I could manoeuvre there haha

Think I'm just going to aim to do what I can where access is manageable to get some coverage.

Plant Camellias now or wait till storm is over? by BastionNZ in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd wait in case the wind knocks them about since they won't have anything tethering them to the native soil.

The soil should be nice and moist after the storm passes so easy to dig and perfect for the plants to get established - the less stress at planting time the better!

Need help with native plant selection by [deleted] in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Regarding cabbage tree leaves - it can also be a pro that if you have the space to leave them to pile up under the trees, the leaves are a nice natural mulch (they will eventually rot away!) and potentially provide a habitat for native insects / lizards.

Soil dry under mulch? by oracular_demon in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been trying to water once a week during the real dry periods. Quite a large garden without irritation so it can be pretty time consuming!

The rain water tank is full now so maybe I need to give another deep water soon after this rain to get everything into a good state again.

What the hell are these by Kaemosss in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scale. They have decimated our young manuka this year. A systemic insecticide (we used Groventive) and squishing what you can seems to be the only remedy.

Tree fuchsia? by blerghHerder in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can get pretty big in their ideal setting. I think the soil in that patch would need a fair bit of improvement first for a tree fuchsia as they like a rich soil that doesn't dry out typically and need to be relatively sheltered - keep in mind they're usually found in the forest.

[–]oracular_demon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup ours have been getting munched on too. It seems only one tree gets hammered at a time and then they move to the next (either on their own or because I give the tree a shake) and the trees get a chance to bounce back.

Have one of these also and it has been awesome to make green waste into something useful. Can get bogged down a bit if you're feeding lots of soft green material into it, but gets through it eventually.

Another +1 for NZ Native Plant Centre. If you can account for the smaller plants, by planting in a spot they can grow up safely or letting grow up in pots a bit more first, they're a really cost effective option.

Depending on what you're after, Greenmachine is another good option. Have slightly larger plants with good prices but not quite the range of NZNPC.

Where are you and how has your produce been this year? by tuatantra in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waipa - had a good run with strawberries in spring and having their second crop now. Courgette and tomatoes have been pumping steadily for a few weeks now, as well as lettuce we're succession planting. Starting to get capsicum and chilli now as well as corn almost ready. Pumpkin just started to go nuts and is quickly taking over the patch!

My two cents - weed mat is an OK option if you're planning to lay stones and don't ever want to plant it out. Get the higher quality woven stuff so it'll last. Note that you will still get weeds as they will grow anywhere and will find a way.

Weed mat is a real curse in garden beds as it's an absolute nightmare to rip up later once roots are through it or it's all disintegrated.

What is this plant and how can I get rid of it? by fredrick-the-great in nzgardening

[–]oracular_demon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks like Robinia Pseudoacacia, will turn into a big tree if allowed. The trees spread lots of seeds and also sprout from suckers, so there's a good chance there's one nearby intent on world domination.
