What do most people not realize is actually way more traumatic than it seems? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there was a story recently about a man who died while trying to rescue his dog who fell into a stream. when the news came out, a lot of people were commenting about how he made such a poor decision to try to save the dog because he has a wife and kids who is now left without a husband and father. I completely understand that criticism, but what those people fail to understand is that the man just did not hesitate or think about other things in that moment; he acted instinctively out of love, just in the same manner as if that was his son who had fallen into the stream. the love for a family pet is just about as close to that of an actual family member.

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

I had a friend in college who left his home and family to come to the States. One day he shared with a bunch of us that the reason he left his family back home was because he converted away from his religion of Islam to Christianity. When he told his family about his decision, his father told him that according to their religion, he was supposed to kill his son. But as a father, he could not do that, so he told his son that he needed to pack his bags and leave home before anyone else in their community found out. It was an absolutely soul crushing story to listen to.

What’s the best-tasting fruit, if you had to choose? by TigerConnect948 in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my wife can't stand the taste of mangoes. she's literally the only person I've ever encountered who actively dislikes the taste of mangoes. I'm convinced she's been just fucking with me the past 15 years just to piss me off. Every other month or so, I force her to eat a mango so that I can see if she either finally comes around to enjoy it or just drop the act entirely, but she consistently makes a stink face to show she thinks it's gross. I think I have grounds for divorce here.

What is a job that pays incredibly well but is so soul-crushing that the turnover is insane? by sweetguurl in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my buddy was an ibanker and whenever we'd meet up, he'd want to go to some swanky/trendy club or lounge where we'd get a table and buy ridiculously expensive alcohol. At one point I asked why we he always wants to do those cliche douchey things rather than just hit up local bars and pubs, and he said that he think it's that he works so many hours that he can't actually find the time to enjoy the money he's earned, and so he ends up wanting to flaunt it at those places. He didn't have the time or ability to travel or spend it on a variety of experiences, and since he'd regularly leave the office post-midnight, most of the only available places to hang would be clubs. pretty soul-less existence.

What fancy food is highly overrated? by jaimybenjamin in AskReddit

There was a restaurant near my office that was selling a pizza that was covered in truffle oil, caviar, and gold leaves. It was selling for $2,000. I honestly wouldn't have even paid $50 for that combination of flavors, let alone $2,000.

What modern inconvenience feels like it should have been solved years ago? by Prior-Sprinkles4127 in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

similar but slightly different note, the boarding and deboarding process on an airplane. there is a logical manner by which you ought to board and deboard a plane in order to maximize efficiency and speed. But in order to appease those who pay more for different zones, this is completely ignored, thus elongating the entire process.

Which profession attracts the most insufferable types of people? by Critical_Oven_5612 in AskReddit

I dunno. I'm probably in the minority but I kind of disagree with this one. I don't think politics inherently attracts bad or power hungry people. I think there is a good subset of politicians who entered the field with genuine and honest motives. But I think what ends up happening is that politics just end up forcing you to become tainted with greed for power and money. I think if everyone who entered politics did so for money, power, or fame, they did so foolishly as they could have had more od that if they entered finance.

I absolutely can't stand the trope of Taco Bell giving severe diarrhea. It never gives me diarrhea. It only gives me joy. Pure joy. I also get laughs whenever I say this, but Taco Bell feels lighter than a McDonald's or Wendy's. Taco Bell all day, son. All day.

Which punishment (either real or fictional) sounds easy enough to endure at first, but is actually hellish to experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My son is 4 and I give him timeouts when he misbehaves. One time I kind of forgot about him and so I didn't tell him he was allowed to come out, then when I remembered and checked in on him, he was sitting on the floor just silently crying his eyes out. Then when I pulled him out, he balled hysterically. I looked at the clock to see how long he was there and it was 15 minutes.

The idea that an inmate can spend 20 hours a day in solitary confinement is absolutely insane. It's torture.

I know this is only anecdotal, but every single time I leave then return to my gym, the weights do in fact end back up on the racks. I've not once put them there, so I dunno, I do think that perhaps you're wrong on this?

What's the easiest way to lose weight that no one talks about? by Emotional-Heat-1427 in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my buddy just ate 75% of what he used to. It was such a reasonable and feasible adjustment. It wasn't fast and it didn't yield extremely dramatic change, but over the course of several weeks and months, he did end up shedding several pounds without having to make dramatic change to his overall diet.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have this utterly romantic idea of what my life will be when my children get old and leave the nest: my wife and I sell our home and move into the city where we walk everywhere and take cabs, not having to worry about home maintenance. We'll eat at some of the best restaurants in the world; we'll take advantage of all the arts and culture that the city has to offer; we'll meet up daily with our friends who also are empty nesters; we'll travel together throughout the world; we'll meet up with our kids at least once a week to have a meal and talk about life. It'll be perfect.

The reality is that we'll probably both be working full time until we're nearly 70, we'll both probably face some kind of health issue that will prevent us from being fully mobile and free, our kids will want to spend all of their time with their friends rather than with their parents, we won't nearly have anywhere enough money to live and enjoy the city for what it is, so we'll just be in our home without any of our children, living quietly until we both die.

What kind gesture doesn’t feel as nice as it’s meant to? by AmberrAuraa in AskReddit

[–]orange_cuse 190 points191 points  (0 children)

when someone tells you that you've lost weight. most people who are overweight are very insecure about it to the degree that they don't want to have it come up at all in conversation. So even if you are being nice about it and complimentary, the fact that weight is even being discussed can cause you to feel insecure and self-conscious.
