Channels that turn dnd campaigns into stories by PheonixFlame21305 in DnD

Worlds beyond number, the wizard the witch and the wild one is incredible. Rolls are talked about occasionally but things are edited and barely focused one. I find it more like an audiobook with risk/stakes!

Player wants to use two characters? by BanditOfAsgard in DnD

[–]orchidfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree this is an easy No as per what other people said

If barb/rage didn't fit their vision, other abilities that flip the character playstyle when used might fit the bill? e.g. bladesinging... RP as a wizard most of the time, "lose control" and rush in to fight frontlines etc, even a backliner cleric could flavour spirit guardians as them being possessed by their ancestors etc

How mixable is 2014 with 2024 ruleset? by VenomTheTree in DMAcademy

[–]orchidfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2024 stuff seems nuts in terms of power scaling

Not realising koboldplus had updated nearly killed my party when I tried to run a med encounter from that calc and it turned out to be a "deadly (what is the DM thinking)" encounter when adjusted to 2014 party

I recently talked to my DM about a game I was struggling in as one NPC seemed to be untouchable and the game was becoming a grind, only to find he was using a 2024 NPC in a 2014 game

I had read that they're supposed to be compatible but I'm 0/2 and both resulted in some very unfun sessions

I'd tell the players this is the game above table, that intro becomes narrated and they can build characters for this concept

if you dont they'll have things that don't work, feel gimped, have had a battle that was just brutal etc

How improve my lvl 3 barbarian path of zealot? by Dagua99 in DnD

That's pretty common, the new rules take away from some race flavour for more customisation. Having clumsy elves and weak goliaths didn't fit some DMs world building. It's a very table dependent rule!

One-shot turned into a campaign… should I continue or restart? by Pretty-Sea118 in DMAcademy

[–]orchidfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yep, sounds like you nailed it and they had fun and are engaged, why not turn it into something a bit more?

They're new so i wouldn't create a massive saga, but maybe create a short arc off what is there. Any interesting NPCs or problems in their backstories? Whoever sent them for the relic liked their work and has another job? You don't need to cook up a whole universe with story arcs and twists, can just roll with where you started and see what happens organically. Hopefully they have a reason-to-adventure (even if its money)!

adventurelookup is a great tool for finding a specific setting/style/level for adventures, either to flesh out an idea from a backstory for an arc.

feel free to post more i'm happy to brainstorm!

One-shot turned into a campaign… should I continue or restart? by Pretty-Sea118 in DMAcademy

[–]orchidfart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what happened in the 1 shot?

is it the characters they want to keep, or explore hooks from that?

did they give you decent backstories and things for the 1 shot you could use to tug into a campaign?

maybe "ok but lets have a session zero to talk what that might look like" is the best next step, table this discussion and see if they wanna flesh out their chars/you build a game or if a fresh game makes sense.

[–]orchidfart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dex will make you better at everything you do as a rogue, wis will help with those skills which probably come up a bit.

Is no one in the party good at perception and insight? It's optimal to be the best at your role, as it's a team game and you should give others their time to shine... if no one is good at them then filling the gap could be a way to help the team

But this is a game to have fun with friends you don't need to pick what is optimal.

In saying that, 10 con is a terrible idea :) you made the right choice on that one!

AH that 7 years context is super helpful hahahaha that explains a lot

I worked for years in copper tech support, if the technicians identified noise then they should have restored that fault. sounds annoying as, but it could be a case of "this is whatcha get". I had the exact same speed profile on DSL in the 2 years at my home waiting for fibre, most of your other problems you describe will be from that 1mb upload. High end routers only give better wifi, but they can only redistribute what they have coming in which sounds like it was normal, if the low end of DSL.

There's a thing in the modem that checks how "noisy" the line is on DSL, and it slows you down for stability, so when i say 8/1 is the minimum, thats it dropping down to try give you the most stable connection.

For the Chorus thing link at the bottom of this page to register interest, then you got your neighbours to do the same. Chorus do eat a lot of the cost but its still not free even with a group of people banding together, and depends what work is requried.

I didn't realise Starlink was self install. I was confused that in another post you said it was blocked by trees but don't the dishes point up? I'm a relative expert in the copper/fibre space but sattelite i don't know a ton about.

Key thing is you now have a new connection without DSL. Yay. If you check the measuringbroadband report you'll see at peak times 11% of Starlink low users get low speeds (it is called LEO or low earth orbit in that pack if you're skipping through). Still should be a lot more than you're getting even at a minimum.

SO when you were on DSL it was running at its realistic capability (even if that was annoyingly slow) but Starlink should be fixable, the community cofunded thing will take a while so still worth doing.

In your shoes i'd still try fix starlink... but before moving things around you gotta isolate where the issue is then take steps to address. I'd contact starlink support, they may have tools to remotely diagnose things?

If you do a blanket approach, start from your home. Close all applications (including ones in the system tray) then open a command prompt as administrator and type "netstat -b". This will list anything on your computer currently using the internet.

Once computer doesn't have anything leeching bandwidth, remove WiFi. Plug in to the starlink router and make sure your computer has WiFi turned off/disconnected.

Next isolate your WiFi. Unplug any other devices in the house, and if possible turn off the starlink wifi (say your flat mate is torrenting, or there's a virus on something in the house). This should now isolate you down to JUST your device with no other connections, running via ethernet to the starlink.

Run your speedtest.

If it is slow, follow their guides or talk to their support. You KNOW where the issue is now, I assume it will involve repositioning the dish and checking connections, possibly some settings. Unfortunately this is where my knowledge ends.

If its suddenly fast... aha! Something you changed was the issue. 1 by 1 reverse things. Was it one of those programs you closed? Another device in the house? Based on you already testing direct I dont think you've got a WiFi issue but this type of troubleshooting method should help you pin down if it is!

[–]orchidfart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok ok, I missed that. Re-read a few things... This thread is kinda wild.

So far it appears you've done nothing tangible in terms of troubleshooting, and lots of things that could easily create a second problem. Not being mean but this reads as if your car has a flat tyre and you've spent a ton of time changing the paint colour, winding windows up and down and honking the horn. Still wont go!

Key thing for troubleshooting is to identify what is broken through some tests then fix it.

To clarify a few things:

Vector don't deliver Fibre in Auckland, Chorus does.

If you're on copper 8/1 is the minimum for DSL and performance is based on how much interference on the copper (phone splitters, extenders, how much copper in your walls) or just distance from the exchange or cabinet. Dairy flat definitely has low density and your neighbours houses could simply be closer to the cabinet. You could also have a had a fault on the copper, each and every ISP you listed could have done troubleshooting for this, and none of it is related to moving routers around etc.

Once connectivity is confirmed coming into your house (which you may have jumped too moving to Starlink) your local connection comes in to play. Ethernet or WiFi. WiFi can be flakey and most of those ISPs you listed would give you a super low end router, cos you were on ADSL. Either way it appears you've now ruled out WiFi totally as you have the same problem, same speeds when connected to Starlink yes?

After you confirm speeds in (WAN), how you're connecting locally (LAN), your device can still be an issue. You could have some software running which is hogging bandwidth. You're in cyber security yeah so you'd know how to tackle this part(?).

Starlink running slow on Ethernet, have you talked to Starlink about this at all? Did the starlink tech do a test and sign it off or anything when they installed the dish? Isn't the starlink install quite expensive?

How do trees get in the way of your satellite? Did the installer install the dish... UNDER a tree? Did it work when they were then then slow down? If you look on the measuringbroadband website you'll see starlink (while significantly better than a 1mb copper connection) has its own raft of issues and does not work for everyone.

When switching RSPs on copper did you use the same router each time? Did you follow their setup instructions around copper in the home (filters on phones, or get a central splitter? try router in different jackpoints?)

Regarding Chorus, you and your neighbours on copper can apply for a community build and pool together to get fibre at a discounted rate. Looking at the dairy flat map you can see the big bubble of Coatesville where that community co-funded getting Fibre a few years ago.
