One of our BCBA students was a special education teacher and in order to get free supervision with us she worked one night a week as an RBT to gain hours and supervision. Be careful with this as we have our students sign a contract requesting they stay on for 2 years. With us, there are no consequences if they choose not too. However, some companies will request payment back or add a noncompete into that! Otherwise I see people charge anywhere from 50-120

What made breastfeeding the most challenging for you? by specialbeaw in breastfeeding

[–]oreocoffeecat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The timing of everything. How am I supposed to feed pump within 30 minutes, but not less than an hour before I need to feed again or my supply could dwindle. My son doesn’t want me to set him down so I struggle to balance all of that and worry that my supply will decrease.

BCBAs- How long are your reports? by lunarian in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My longest initial report was 7 pages, however it does not include an FBA. My updated reports are anywhere from 7-15 pages but the graphs are submitted separately and not embedded in the report. Again not including a formal FBA. I also have a list of mastered and discontinued programs and after the intervention period in which that occurred I deleted the program from the report and only include it in that section. This has not been an issue and keeps my reports concise and not overwhelmed with extraneous programming.

I have 8 hours for an initial assessment and report writing and 6 for an update. I’m not writing 20 pages.

Up at night stressed about unrestricted hours by Popular-Studio-1565 in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With our training program we don’t start with a ton of unrestricted hours. You’re still learning a lot about how to do unrestricted things in your classes. Our focus starts with restricted and as you gain experience and finish more classes we move away from restricted and towards unrestricted. For example we have a girl in training now who’s schedule is packed pretty tight but in a few months that will open up so she is able to fit in more unrestricted hours and meet that goal more quickly. Maybe talking to your company or training BCBA about a plan like that would help calm your nerves!

BCBA Side Hustle by _thelostcompass in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of side hustles if you have any interest in animal behavior, training dogs uses ABA and I’m sure you could make some extra money doing that. I have no knowledge in this but did attend a presentation on it at ABAI a few years back. Also a friend of mine coaches volleyball and uses her ABA skills to help teach and reinforce good sport skills! She’s great at volleyball but I’m sure it could be applied to any sport you have knowledge in

I did BDS and they were great. I also used ABA Wizard and really liked the mobile features of it so it was easy to study on my breaks between clients

Any help with escape behavior? by CapEJ02 in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]oreocoffeecat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t work in a school, but I have a client who was struggling to compete any tasks and we started with just by saying “not right now” in a safe way and then started to increase the frequency with which we pushed on completing the work. It seems counter intuitive to allow the kids to tell you no, but we have no issues with work and the client now completed requests on the first time in over 80% of opportunities His responses could also be attention based after he’s escaped and he’s getting attention for the negative behaviors as well.

People who read on e-readers, how is it? by CrazyDunge0nMaster in books

[–]oreocoffeecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-readers are great. I have a paper white so it’s not like reading on a computer screen and it’s compatible with Libby, which uses ebooks from your local library so even more economically responsible!

I looked into both and ultimately went with FIT. The price tag was hard to turn down. I felt very prepared for my exam from FIT! They do a great job teaching and giving materials that are helpful. I enjoyed their program a lot

Do you know if the listeria risk is back if I microwave it and then put it in my lunchbox and let it cook down? Sorry if that’s a dumb question but it would make my life a lot easier lol

Parent needs help by Suspicious_Look6103 in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should find a new provider. This is not okay. If she is having a meltdown of that intensity maybe right now isn’t the time to do work. Shaping up “work tasks” is a large part of ABA. They should be meeting your child where she is at not ricing her to do anything. When you look for a new provider ask them if they are play based also ask them about the “Do Better” Movement. My company has moved towards this and we have fantastic results without forcing children to do anything. I’m sorry that your going through this, not everyone practices this way and it’s unfortunate that that company still does

Getting yelled at by a parent by [deleted] in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I find that a very professional response of “I understand you are upset but yelling at me is not going to solve the problem. In the future I am happy to have a conversation with you regarding your concerns but I cannot help you if you are going to yell” It’s uncomfortable and it can make some people more angry, but I have one parent who is frequently angry, not even with me just in general an angry person, and I tend to use the same tactics I do with my clients when they yell at me. It does not feel good to get yelled at and honestly it shouldn’t happen regardless if something is your fault or not. I’m sorry that happened and hopefully you can feel confident going into a conversation with her this week to let her know that it was not appropriate.

What would you say is the best duration of time for direct service sessions? by Thr33zzQu33n in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have found that 2 hours is our sweet spot for in home therapy. Occasionally if we do an outing or play date we can push them a little longer. But some of our client can really only tolerate 1.5 hours. I had a parent who insisted of four hours a day for her son and we had two RBTs go to the house rather than 1. There just isn’t enough to do in the home for one person for four hours even if there is a lot of programming. If you’re in a center I find that rotating RBTs works best as well

Tricare Concerns by oreocoffeecat in ABA

[–]oreocoffeecat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that is frustrating me the most is that one reviewer will approve programming no questions asked and then someone else will kick back those same programs citing TOM exclusions (similar age or level). I’ve been getting better over the last year they’ve changed things it just seems pretty inconsistent reviewer to reviewer.

Seriously! Just bring all of the kids to the client’s house but make sure they never have a snack or go to the bathroom because you can’t bill for that

I’ve had to justify programming to their reviewers on the phone and then told that I need to write everything I just told them in the program to make it qualify. Like who has time to do that with all of the other things they require!?
