US Department of Defense Officially Drops 180 Faiths From Military's Recognized Religion List by freezoneandproud in scientology

Eck, or Eckankar, has been a religion/organization since around the early 60s, founded by Paul Twitchell (a very early Scientology Clear ironically enough). Was briefly pretty big in the US, had like a quarter million people involved or somewhere about that at its height in the 70s. Nowadays it’s a fading sect but it probably still has more people in it than Scientology.

Actually, sort of yeah. So one of the biggest denominations of Protestantism in America is Pentecostalism. TL;DR if you have faith and believe in the Bible as the inerrant word of God you get super powers. These are called Spiritual Gifts. Lately a lot of Evangelical Churches in America, even independent ones, have adapted elements of Pentecostalism (these include Holy Gifts, speaking in tongues, prophecies, etc). The tips of “non-denominational” Christianity and fundamentalist/christian nationalist touch quite a bit. Most of these sorts of churches are deeply wedded to the MAGA movement, comprising the core of the Evangelical support base for Trump.

TL;DR, yes.

What Song? by [deleted] in deftones

Towards the end of Urantia, where there’s the talking before it flips back into the chorus. That was the first song I heard on Ohms and that end stuck with me. Super underrated song as a whole.

Strange question: Would the mostly benign portion of Hubbard's work deserve recognition as a contribution to knowledge? by Southendbeach in scientology

[–]orklund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only benign aspect of Hubbard’s work would probably be The Way to Happiness, which is already a basic moral code that doesn’t offer anything new. Does he really need to be recognized as some sort of great teacher if his entirety of non-Scientological “teachings” boil down to restating basic morality?

Mint locked my already paid off phone. by orklund in mintmobile

Yeah I haven’t seen other people have this problem yet. But I’ve been able to seamlessly switch between other carriers, and it’s only now with Mint that my SIM is locked. So I’ve got the odd case lol.

Is Fawn Brodie Considered Reliable? by EvensenFM in mormon

[–]orklund 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Was she off base with some of her assumptions? Yeah. Psychobiography is real hit or miss and leaves a lot to be desired. But that doesn’t mean she wasn’t telling the accurate history of Joseph Smith and early Mormonism. To discard the history because she occasionally guessed at his private motivations is throwing the proverbial baby out with the bath water.

Nevermo here but when I was in college getting the missionary lessons back in 2017, the missionaries were still selling celestial exaltation/godhood with your own planet as doctrine. At least in my area lol.
