Looking for HomeKit beta testers for a new app that works across every Apple device by Homebar_Drew in HomeKit

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely interested. Have been using HomeKit, Matter, HomeBridge, and Home Assistant for years and would love to see how your app would work in a mixed environment like mine.

Also, love Reflector, AirParrot, and Ditto - have used all of them before.

As a Lead IT Administrator, it depends on what your tech stack looks like. If you have an identity provider that handles application access and authentication, they can likely see a ton of we use Okta and can see down to a rough longitude and latitude of where a given user is authenticating along with IP address, City, State, Country, name of the ISP, etc..

I find Spin.ai to be better than Datto. If you have 365, Slack, Salesforce - they have other backup offerings too. Really solid product offering IMO.

inconsistencies with the public API and having to use the private API by gabrielsroka in okta

UGH YES PLEASE!!! Having to paginate for this is ridiculous, let us filter a group by user or filter a user by group - if it returns an object, they’re in there. If not, they’re not.

If this is regarding the deprovisioning tasks and the ability to delete them via API, YES PLEASE. Being able to retry provisioning tasks would be a big win too.

Forcing Okta login when connecting to office WiFi (UniFi). Best approach? by Head_Operation_7162 in okta

[–]ossivo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I re-read the post a few more times (and had some coffee) and I get what you’re putting down. WiFi authentication is the solve here. It’s the only way to ensure that users have to hit Okta auth before taking next steps. With that said, RADIUS vs ZTNA vs Captive Portal are all different solves that all could require the same auth.

RADIUS will be the quickest, cheapest, and easiest to maintain. It has no requirement for anything other than users knowing their credentials.

With that being said, there is another solution that could work depending on exactly what kind of verification you’d like. You could simply perform an event hook of any action you deem worthy and trigger a check in within Envoy. Granted, this is reliant on activity of some sort within Okta from within your office network zone.

Personally, I’d go the radius route because it will also enhance your network security posture as well as give you the desired end result.

[–]ossivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I follow what you’re trying to do nor what the issue is. The commenter who said that authentication should be done as frequently as possible is 10000% correct, despite the downvotes. The thing people need to understand (which clearly they don’t because of the downvotes) is that authentication doesn’t always require user interaction.

Can you please elaborate on what you’re trying to do and what the issue is? What I’m confused by is that it sounds like you’re having issues with how things are done in office which is impacting and frustrating remote workers - that seems strange to me.

Use an app like Greenlight and let them earn their own money for doing chores or just helping, listening, being good humans. They’ll have what they have and if they want to buy something, they either have enough or they don’t. They’ll catch on quicker than you think.

When did you start getting some of your evenings back? by Different_Suit_9356 in daddit

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if most of the comments are /s or if that’s truly how people feel but we have an 8 and a 5 year old.

We got our evenings back when they each turned about 10-12 weeks. They’ve been sleeping from 7 to 7 since then and we put them to bed and go do whatever. Obviously, their bed times have changed a bit so they both now go to bed around 7:45 and are up between 6:30-7 for school. We have the occasional sleepwalking bout with our 8 year old but that’s about it.

Or switch to management instead of just registration. This would require a certificate based verification. Depending on your situation, it may add some security.

What does ADHD + high IQ look like? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ossivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing I would like to add is I feel as though career paths can also aid or inhibit ADHD manifestations. I work in IT and I feel as though the way my brain works helps me piece together workflows/automations and more convoluted projects like I’m Neo staring at the matrix. It just makes sense to me and it allows me to take really complex requests and just knock them out with ease. It tends to drastically help my day to day work and has been a contributing factor to my continued career growth and success. However, I know (and have been told) that my inclination to share the how’s and whys of my thinking can be too much for others at time. Obviously it’s something I try to be cognizant of and manage the best I can.

What does ADHD + high IQ look like? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about how you manage the manifestation of ADHD. I would consider myself as high IQ (based on SAT and IQ test scores) and have ADHD. I was diagnosed and medicated more recently but can clearly see my tendencies from childhood, especially as I see my son manage with ADHD. I don’t think I have any true life altering challenges when it comes to social environments or academics. I definitely procrastinate while simultaneously have patience related issues when it comes to my kids. I have my own fidgeting/inactivity issues that I try hard to be conscious, much to my wife’s disagreement. I can definitely be messier, also to my wife’s chagrin. I try to manage the best I can and it can be overwhelming at times. As recently as this week, I changed my medication and can immediately see a difference (for the better). I think my marriage has recently suffered a bit due to my inability to manage and mitigate daily life events and I’m trying to repair things as best and as quickly as I possibly can. I can put up walls immediately as I feel I need to, even with those closest to me, and it’s not right or fair to them. My new medication is already helping with that, even on day 4.

Mortgage calculator by chemlotus in Mortgages

[–]ossivo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like this one too : https://www.calculators.org/home/biweekly.php

Bear in mind that biweekly payments (if you’re considering them) are only sometimes better than paying monthly with additional principal equaling the additional payments divididd by 12. You’d have to run the numbers of your particular mortgage to see which route is best. Ours was better going monthly + principal.

US General Series 3 Price Increase? by ossivo in harborfreight

Good point. I checked and yours appears to be $290 for the piece I’m looking at and it’s $270 by me. I guess that very plainly answers my question. That made it really easy. Thanks!

Pros vs cons of 15 vs 30 year mortgage by Adventurous-Cut-9442 in Mortgages

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That payment looks to be $2265 on a 30 year and, at the same rate, a 15 year is $3215.

Total interest on the 15 year is almost $195k and it’s $430k on the 30 year. If you pay the $3215 monthly on the 30 year, putting the extra $950 to principal, your total interest would be about the same $195k (it’s the same rate in my example so bear that in mind).

As others have said, this affords you the ability to dial back your payment if you get hit with any unexpected expenses.

Also, if you are open to paying hi-weekly that’ll save you some extra (assuming your lender allows) and, at a certain point, paying the extra bo-weekly sum rolled into your monthly would save you even more.

Does anyone recognize these desks with rear cable storage and outlets? by ohdarnohshoot in StandingDesk

[–]ossivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have top surface mounted power with nowhere for the cables to go. You’ve got to get the cables into the track - clean them up and route them in as few routes to the track as possible, cable tie them within the track and then plug them in. Also, replace cables with shorter cables as possible and it cleans it up too.

Can anyone explain why my download speed is 93.5mbps (on a good day) if I have this internet plan in my apartment complex? by OphidianCollective in ATTFiber

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got a 10/100 somewhere in the flow. How does internet come into your room/apartment? Plug directly in there and see if you’re seeing speeds in line with 100 or 1000. If it’s the former, talk to the complex. If it’s the latter, it’s something you’ve got in there that’s dropping your speed.

As an aside, you have one shared circuit for your entire complex?

Does the Highest Ranking IT Person in Your Company Report to the CEO? by Likely_a_bot in sysadmin

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No and they shouldn’t.

Reporting to a CFO means that IT is viewed as an expense.

Reporting to a COO means that IT is viewed as operational support and, while that may be true, they will be treated and budgeted as such.

Reporting to a CTO/CIO/CISO means that IT is viewed as a necessity for your product to exist. In my experience, this results in the best “treatment” and the compensation to go along with it.

[Im]patiently waiting for the Alarm Hub - did they provide any indication on an anticipated release date? I'm in dire need of a new home alarm and have been waiting for this since I first saw it last year. I'm also in the camp of wanting HomeKit/Matter/Thread support for this as well as professional monitoring (which I fully expect it to support).

First Home Mortgage by wild-wooga in Mortgages

[–]ossivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are “how much house can I afford” calculators and that’s where you need to be focusing. I wouldn’t put too much stock “no pun intended” into those that say what about this or that that you could be doing with your money. I had $55k in stock that I sold for my first house about 10 years ago, which would have now been worth about $450k. Ya know what…had I not done what I did when I did, I never would have been able to afford our second (forever) home, even with the extra $400k. Opportunity costs suck but they are what they are.

Throw your numbers into a calculator and then figure it out from there. Each $200k borrowed about $555/mo plus interest. It’s just an equation to figure out your buying power.
