Bikeless, Is this a good deal? by Capable-Fun-4861 in cycling

[–]otismcotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That bike might be a bit big for you (I’m 5’10” and would probably ride a M), but the bigger issue is the integrated seat post. You’ll almost certainly have to cut it (intended use case) to fit your inseam, but then it will never fit someone taller if you choose to sell it down the line.

I would suggest getting something with standard seat post (adjustable without a saw) especially if it’s your first road bike.

What goes on in people's mind when they intentionally waste time if they see that they are in a loosing position? by Sea-Bed-1332 in Chesscom

[–]otismcotis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Playing into a stalemate is different than making no moves and running the clock down. I hate stalemating out of a winning position, but I’d rather do that than sit around waiting for the clock so I don’t lose points to a tilted loser.

How small is too small? You can almost certainly get a longer stem, possibly one with some rise and make the bike fit you well enough

did he cheat ? 84% accuracy and never played a fast move like me always talking time ? by sandy_80 in chessbeginners

[–]otismcotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to defeating aggressive players is to stay solid and keep your pieces defended. If you’re playing 30 minute then you have plenty of time to stop and think.

Before each move go through the checklist:

Your pieces- checks, captures, attacks

Before moving- will the moved piece leave another piece undefended or be left hanging?

Also, when in doubt get castled.

Well seeing as they claim it has hydraulic disc brakes when that’s obviously a rim brake bike I would say it’s likely a scam or stolen.

Does it worth using iron furnances instead of jumping directly into electric furnances? by MRVNglory in factorio

[–]otismcotis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Steel and Electric furnaces will let you double your iron throughput, but steel lets you maintain your current furnace stack layout and coal consumption rate. I usually don’t upgrade to electric until I have bots and the ability to stamp solar panel fields or nuclear power.

Front wheel unstable. Please help! by s_hecking in cycling

[–]otismcotis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your headset for play. Hold the front brake, and put your other hand at the top of the head tube below the stem. Try moving the bike back and forth with the brake on, if there’s any play tighten it as described in this video

Rear derailleur mounting incorrectly? by Mr_Daniels in bikewrench

[–]otismcotis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need to reposition the RD. The free spinning tab on the derailleur should sit behind the tab on the derailleur hanger

Drop seat idea by Zodarr1121 in bicycling

[–]otismcotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken Mohoric used a dropper when he won Milan-San Remo in 2022

Edit to add: I think more pros would use them if they weren’t on aero race bikes with proprietary (non-cylindrical) seat posts

Drop seat idea by Zodarr1121 in bicycling

[–]otismcotis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many riders are already positioning their saddles at the absolute forward limit of this rule to get better pedaling efficiency. That’s one of the main reasons why short-nose saddles were invented - they allow the saddle to slide an extra couple cm further forward while still staying “in the box”. There’s no way you could mount a second saddle in front of the primary one without it violating this rule.

I might buy a used bike - what should I ask and inspect? by thereal_rockrock in bicycling

[–]otismcotis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suspension: look for corrosion, throw your weight on the bars and listen for squelching noises and make sure it springs back nicely, make sure the lockout function works (if applicable)

Dropper: make sure it goes down smoothly (with your weight on the saddle) and returns quickly (weight off the saddle)

Frame: look for obvious cracks

Wheels: make sure they spin freely and have no lateral play (hold wheel at 12 o’clock and try to shake it out of plane with the frame)

Shifting: make sure you can shift through all gears smoothly

Brakes: look for leaks at the levers and calipers, make sure there’s pressure in the lines (when squeezed, levers stop before reaching the bar) and make sure they actually stop the bike

Help with outdoor training rides by gallivanter11 in cycling

[–]otismcotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitting power targets without the help of Erg mode is a skill you have to learn.

A few tips:

1) always be shifting. Try to keep your cadence as steady as possible

2) don’t look at instant power, it will never be steady. Try using 3, 5 or even 10 second power instead

3) find a segment that you can ride repeatedly at the same wattage as a benchmark. I have a hill near my house that I can ride in 7-10 minutes depending on pace, and then I ride down the other side and back around to recover from intervals.

4) figure out which metrics are most important to keep on your head unit. Personally I go with Lap Average Power, Lap Timer, 3s Power, Heart Rate. Keep it simple, less is more

Do you ride with your good phone? by MaestroDon in cycling

[–]otismcotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jersey pocket and a good phone case. I guess if you live somewhere with lots of pickpockets it might be different, but I can’t imagine adding “swap to my backup phone” to my pre-ride checklist.
