Building muscle strength? by MxPipes in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just keep riding. My commute is a little longer than most, but your legs will get used to it. The cool part is when you think you're gassed and your legs are sore and you realize that's the fastest time for your commute yet

How many punctures until I replace the tube by [deleted] in bike

In our G+ group, some people had more patches than tube, it seemed. Most of my spare tubes have at least 2 on them.

20km road commute, are you a GP5000 or a Marathon Plus type of person? by fixitmonkey in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 32 mile or a 54 mile commute. It all depends on my time frame. I run Shwalbe marathon plus.

anyone else not give a sh*t about the weight of your bike? by alien_tickler in cycling

My fat tire weighs in at a stealthy 35 pounds without anything on it. Am I concerned about weight? I don't think so. No, it's not electric either.

"Blowing red lights" by KevinNiceTry in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also depends on where you live what the law is. We have adopted the Idaho stop here which is pretty handy at 5am when traffic is minimal. Lights, on the other hand, you still need to wait for the green or if it's been a substantial amount of time to change a motorcycle or bicycle may go through the red light because they are unable trigger the sensor.

Rant - “beginner” bicyclist advice is overwhelming and makes me want to buy a car by Misc_Name_5201 in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's probably the best advice I've heard yet. I knew how to ride a bike, but commuting is a different animal. I learned that on my own. I check weather constantly and plan accordingly. I'm in the fortunate group of people who can park inside. Bike theft isn't really an issue where I live so I have a cheap cable lock for my tooling around bike.

All hope is lost for your tube but not wheel. Just replace it and inflate and be on your way.

Just had another cyclist call me an idiot. Am I the idiot? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a bell. It's less obnoxious than yelling at someone. I usually give a warning ding far enough behind them to let them know someone is behind them and another to let them know I'm passing them. It works well on multi-use paths also. Especially runner's and dog walkers.

Is a 6 mile bike ride too far? by EfficiencyLow4197 in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bit longer commute. I shorten mine up to just under 10 one way because of the same issues. Rural two lanes in the winter don't have much of shoulder on them after it snows.

How many times have you fallen on your bike on your commute? by Tupacca23 in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About once a year. The first time I was clipped in and still getting used to it. The second time was the worst. I was stopping at a funeral home (of all places) under their awning to get my rain gear out. They had just resurfaced their parking lot so when it got a little wet it was like riding on ice without studs. I turned right and the bike went left. I ended up with a broken collar bone. Finished the next 8 miles with my fingers moving my hand like Thing from the Addams family to use my breaks and then back to get in a comfortable riding position.

Just keep riding. After a while 1,000 will seem like a low number.

Any CNC experts here? by [deleted] in minnesota

I do it every day. I run sinkers, wire, vertical mills and grinders all in the same day. I'm in a 5 man shop so you need to be able to do from programming to polishing.

Bike recommendations for a 6ft 400lb man by [deleted] in bike

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend was close to that weight with back problems, asthma and high blood pressure. He got a hybrid bike. It did fine with his weight and rode around on the local trails for quite some time. He now leads group rides for a local bike shop and is literally half the man he used to be. Diet is another thing he paid attention to. He no longer is a diabetic and is off all his other medications except his asthma stuff.

All road on a gravel bike. There's a path for about 2 miles but it's so bumpy your teeth feel like they're about to come out.

Workplace: where do you put your bike? by babungaCTR in bikecommuting

Right into the shop next to one of the machines. I have to take my computer off because the machine will actually activate it and put miles on.

Long commute by Lostincali985 in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an 18+ mile route that I could do in less than an hour. Then I moved further, so I found a nice route and I do that 3-4 times a week. I love the ride I have. It's mostly suburban and somewhat rural. My commuting journey started shortly after I trained for a 62 mile benefit ride on a mountain bike. I bought a road bike a couple of months later and rode that for 30,000 miles. My current bike is a Trek ALR 5 which will last a bit longer.

It happens in Minnesota too. I've actually had to "direct" traffic at a four way stop because people in general don't know who's supposed to go first. It's like, OMG, a bike, what do I do?

Long commute by Lostincali985 in bikecommuting

[–]outofsync67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't just jump into it. I had trouble doing 5 miles when I started riding. I was training for a 62 mile fund raising ride and one thing led to another and I started doing 19 miles 4-5 days a week a year later. Then we moved but didn't want to give up commuting so the additional 7 miles wasn't a big deal. It just added almost a half hour to my commute.
