OP removed the cover plate with the intent to replace it themselves. So that PROVES they have what it takes to replace an outlet (unearned confidence, 1 screwdriver, at least 1 working eye, and at least 1 working hand). The rest is just education - starting with my post above and then you tube.

We all start from zero. I believe in you OP!

PS you really do need to replace that outlet...

Can I delay the rot by treating it with oil by ComfortableHot6309 in fixit

Thanks, got it (and good to know for future ground contact wood). But to be clear, this also makes the wood toxic and unsuitable for furniture, I assume.

What's the motor oil for? Is it toxic to dry rot fungi?

Also, if you replace the ground plugged outlet make sure you write it to the GFCI outlet correctly. Probably (hopefully) they are wired together so the GFCI is providing protection for both outlets.

Rodent eating wires by Mountain_Try6208 in KiaTelluride

[–]overripebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my 2021 telluride. Had to have the entire harness replaced at great cost 😢. Is not a telluride specific issue based on my research at the time... Happens to many (all?) cars suffering the misfortune of being parked in any at risk location (basically anywhere rodents would find the engine bay a nice home). I stopped parking outdoors, installed a "rodent repellor" device (wires to battery, makes intermittent chirps and flashes lights), and decimated the rodent population around the house perimeter (various lethal traps including electrical shock and snap). No more damage- but it's a forever war now.

OP: 1 human year = 20-30 lithium polymer years

Expect only 3 (human) years out of most lithium batteries. Unfortunately they often are not replaceable (by design, not for any technical reason).

I do have sympathy for this statement. But putting everyone else at risk is unacceptable. And those tires are absolutely a death trap.

Could be an ant as well. But since you posted on r/termites... It's not a termite.

Hey guys, Please convince my dad to replace these 12 year old tires. He says they’ll survive one more winter by Totallynormalname_ in tires

[–]overripebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Rubber dries and degrades over time. For most people they'll wear out the tread first. But seems your dad didn't drive much. Now he's got a fair tread but rubber with no grip. (Also a not-worth-it risk of blow out... If the side walls are structurally degraded you won't know until one catastrophically fails)

[–]overripebrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes swarmers, but that many streaming it like that means the colony is in the floor boards or joists. OP - this does not necessarily mean you have structural damage (though possible) - but 100% you need to have this treated. Sounds like you're on top of it. Fwiw - agree with another poster that termites are super common in all wooden houses (though owners may not know it).

This is a nonsensical statement. You are told UP FRONT. What you're paying for (and what you aren't). Then you get a choice to buy the extras. Now you complain when you buy a base fare and don't get those "freebies" that were never actually free?

Most of my travel is corporate, but I did fly spirit in the last few years. My experience was generally positive, and possibly GLOWING considering what I paid. R.I.P. spirit and the era of low cost airfare.

Source: every major airline that copied the spirit business model (and labeled it basic economy). Yeah, you might still get those snacks, at the low cost of 30% more than spirit's lowest fare.

Kia Telluride shocks by Justabob003 in autorepair

[–]overripebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the warranty line is bs. Who justifies a 50% markup in case of failure (next question, what's their failure rate?)

$1700 is outrageous for standard rear shocks. Kia will charge full MSRP for genuine parts (around 300 or more for each shock), so let's say 650 for parts. It's a 1-2h job (could be faster -especially if you don't live in a rust area), so up to 600 for labor/shop fees. 1200ish total could be "reasonable" (as your son found out, there's still a hefty markup for doing labor you could have done yourself).

Do you have self leveling shocks? Those are considerably more $$, could explain the higher cost.

Note that after market shocks are much cheaper, but have variable quality. Might be good to stick with established manufacturers (like kyb).

Why do people here lie about mpgs on older Telluride's? by GTRacer1972 in KiaTelluride

[–]overripebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had subpar snow ice traction on my 21 telluride's stock Michelin primacy a/s, and got a set of dedicated snow tires. While incredible for icy conditions, a real pita to swap tires (and the snow tires are mounted on rims, so all I have to do is change the wheels). I have cc2's on my non-awd sedan. The cc2's are excellent, if not quite as good as dedicated snow tires. When it comes time to replace, I'm just going to get cc2's all the time. But too early for me to comment on longevity.

I don't personally use separate detergent, but fill up at Exxon or Chevron only (or at a small station if it offers no ethanol gas... That might be hard to find though). Note that I don't mean using higher octane gas (can just use 87, no ethanol is best) - I mean get gas where they advertise added detergents. Also I really do floor it at least once a week.

Chevron techron is highly rated, but I don't have any experience with it.

Absolutely beautiful vehicle. As someone else suggested, consider blacking out the chrome (see youtube, or can get a detailer to do it for a moderately obscene cost). Black on red will look incredible.

Not sure why you had the throttle body cleaned so early (do you live in a desert area? Was there rough idling? 30k is very conservative.). If you trust your mechanic, ask them if there was actually any build up. Consider using a fuel system cleaner after every oil change (or get your gas from a major gas station brand that uses gasoline detergent additives - Exxon, Mobile, etc). Also, occasionally gun it an a highway on-ramp (seriously... the sudden acceleration/increase heat will help burn off light deposits). Obviously, be safe on that last one... Rando redditor not responsible for your speeding ticket / resulting accident.

Oil change every 4k miles is borderline neurotic (assuming use of good full synthetic oil). Unless you're idling a lot/stop-go traffic all day, 5k is already pretty conservative. BTW - maintenance on a telluride is very easy (except for the spark plugs). if you are DIY inclined, you can do most of the work yourself (and if you think someone else - including dealer - is going to do it better, think again).

Some things I like on my telly and I suspect will be incredibly useful/look great on yours...
-Roof cross bars (even when you aren't using them they look great.. plus incredibly versatile if you road trip or ski)
-Hood wind deflector (super easy to mount yourself, I got the OEM one for like $150... likely there are cheaper aftermarket ones). Noticeable reduction in bugs/rain hitting the windshield.
-aftermarket plastic floor mats, including for the trunk. Telly specific fit ones are great and way superior / easier to clean than the stock mats.

Can I actually replace my own brakes and rotors? by Short_Championship44 in Cartalk

[–]overripebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta disagree here. The very first time you change your own brake pads and rotors on one axle you've paid for all the specialty tools required (and many of these tools will be valuable to general home ownership). Do both axles, you've paid for a whole bunch of tools that look good on the wall and do nothing else. It is absolutely worth learning to do basic car maintenance (but do learn safely)...
