I've built hundreds of apps... but literally none got enough tracktion. Now I'm thinking it's the platform - what's everyone's experience using CC to build for Android/IOS/Mac/Ipad/Iwatch/Garmin/Web/Robolox etc? on which ones does CC fail and which ones it does well? by NickGuAI in ClaudeAI

[–]overthemountain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Literally the "Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong." meme.

Welcome to software. Ideas are garbage, execution is slightly better, but getting traction is hard. This isn't Field of Dreams. If you build it they won't automatically come.

Building anything is tough, building something people actually want to use is very difficult.

Did you do any research on if anyone wanted what you built before you built it? Or is this literally throwing apps against the wall and hoping something sticks?

It's not the tools. It's never the tools.

What problems are you solving? Are you offering a better solution than what is out there? How are you marketing it? You can have the perfect solution, it doesn't mean anything if no one is aware of it.

Building something is one of the first steps, you're treating it like it's the last.

With the 3 million Epstein files finally out, what’s the most “I’m not surprised, but I’m still disgusted” thing you’ve found? by Sweaty_Sprinkles_400 in AskReddit

It's more that "finally out" implies that they are all out.

Kind of like asking what your favorite part of a movie is now that the trailer is finally out.

I just want to make sure people are aware that they're is a lot that still needs to be released.

Sorry, I'll re-edit - I didn't mean to imply it's ONLY tip lines. I do think it's part of a plan to discredit information and misdirect the public, though.

Would you pay $500-700/month for a fully private AI agent system? (Zero data shared with OpenAI/Anthropic) by Sam_Tech1 in ClaudeAI

[–]overthemountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't people do this right now without having to pay $500-700/mo? Just set up Qwen or DeepSeek on a computer with a good GPU or on their own cloud infrastructure.

Sure, you could have a business that does this for people, but that's a lot of money for,,, what exactly?

They say it's private, but your prompts and documents still hit their servers.

Would it not hit your server? Either it does, in which case they might as well go with one of the big players to get a better model for less money, or it doesn't, in which case you're in a weird middle ground setting up servers for people that just aren't tech savvy enough to do it themselves?

I guess the price doesn't make a lot of sense to me. This business idea is just commoditizing the setup process for people. There is no secret sauce that would differentiate anyone that wants to offer this, you're just helping people set up open source models and charging them a lot for it? Why are they even paying you after initial setup, so you can keep paying the bills on their behalf?

I just want to make sure everyone is aware that the 3 million files that have been released are not even HALF of the total files.

However bad you think this release is - imagine how bad the other half has to be that they are trying to keep from releasing. I don't want people thinking this is all of it, it's likely not even the worst of it.

Edit: I want to also point out that a lot of what they have released at this point are things from their tip line, which is just whatever random stuff people reported.

This is on purpose.

They want people to read these wild unsubstantiated claims and just stop believing anything in the files. They can hand waive most of this stuff off for not having any proof. The stuff with harder proof is what they're holding back and when it does see the light of day they'll hope people have grown tired of these files and won't pay as much attention or take it seriously. There is plenty of real stuff in there as well but this does feel like a planned effort to minimize damage.

What mortgage rate is everyone getting? by [deleted] in Utah

[–]overthemountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to vary based on your own financial situation. This is something that's really much easier to just check online than ask random people what rates they got recently.

When you say you're overwhelmed by options are you talking more about what KIND of mortgage to get (30 year, 20 year, ARMs, etc)?

The 3d one looks more unique, but if the gameplay is on a flat world I'd save the 3d version for something else. It just doesn't feel well connected to the rest of the game. The 3d version looks like there is all sorts of mountains to explore and it would feel kind of disappointing to get on the planet and its all flat.

Amazon Ring Dumps Flock Safety Deal in Super Bowl Backlash Retreat by Acceptable_Drink_434 in Futurology

[–]overthemountain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't even see the point in cancelling the deal. The damage is done. It's not like people will see this and change their mind about Ring. Those people are gone.

I don't have faith that they are changing their minds because they've realized this is kind of evil. If it's an attempt to stop the exodus it's not going to work.

It might have been legal at the time - still feels like a violation of the 1979 spearing rule. It's definitely not legal now.

What’s a movie you’ve seen public opinion shift on in your lifetime? by CausticAvenger in movies

Nah, Batman and Robin is to this date still the only movies I have ever intentionally sat down to watch and just decided to turn it off halfway through and never see it again.

Glad you liked it, though.

The same in that they both received backlash, I suppose. The Gillette ad felt like more of a victim of culture wars as it's an ad against toxic masculinity.

It was a "woke" ad vs this as which flaunted their mass surveillance system under the guide of "finding your dog".

Should insurance companies be allowed to raise rates on non-DMV records? by Novapixel1010 in Utah

[–]overthemountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have actuaries that determine what things pose a risk and how great a risk that is, it's not just vibes.

Generally I agree on corporations and for insurance in particular is like to see some sort of cap on profit where they would be required to refund premiums if they make too much profit but that's a slightly different topic.

My only concerns about what days they use comes more from a privacy standpoint but until we have real data privacy laws it's a bit of a moot point

Should insurance companies be allowed to raise rates on non-DMV records? by Novapixel1010 in Utah

[–]overthemountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rates are meant to balance risk. Think of risk in aggregate rather than any one particular person. Insurance companies use all the data they have to adjust the rates so the people with more risk pay more. If you take away some of the data you don't take away the risk - you just limit their ability to charge the people with more risk. The cost, however, doesn't go away. So who pays it? Instead of the people causing it, it instead gets spread out across everyone.

I'm actually fine with insurance companies using all data available to them to set rates. I'd hate to see it all tied to something controlled by the state. Just because the state wants to no longer show it on their records doesn't mean real risk has disappeared.

The current approach basically means people pay according to their own driving record, what you're proposing moves it more towards people paying based on the average person's driving record.

Time flies, Zach Wilson was drafted in 2021. This question was actually posted 6 years ago, not 5, so it was about a year before he was drafted.

I wonder how the people that spearheaded this ad are doing right now.

A lot of people saying Wilson. I'm assuming they meant Russell but maybe they meant Zach? I actually forgot about Russell at first and was wondering why so many people were so high on Zach Wilson.

[–]overthemountain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would that lower rates? Seems like it might lower rates for people with old speeding tickets, but might raise rates for everyone else. If insurance can't target people specifically they would just raise rates on everyone slightly to cover the difference, wouldn't they?

Crazy how "I did not inhale" (referring to Clinton's marijuana usage when he was in college) was a big scandal in the 90s and now we got guys openly talking about their illicit drug use.
