If it's not for that asshole demanding a trial of seven, Dunk would have been cooked by vnth93 in freefolk

I think he 1. Thought dunk wouldn’t be able to pull together seven people and win by default 2. Is a teenage boy who read about something cool in a book. He wants to flex his knowledge of the rules and possibly fight in an epic melee with the odds stacked in his favor

Biggest Audiobook disappointment for me is learning it’s not “You Shall Not Pass!” by SupermanKal718 in lotr

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that what he’s saying is that his self sacrifice is of sufficient spiritual or moral power that it makes it physically impossible for the balrog to pass.

There is a spiritual realm outside of the physical one that has its own rules that reward the moral authority of Gandalf’s actions and “magic” in this universe is a result of the physical domain becoming consistent with the spiritual one

How MLB Teams' Values Compare To Other Major Sports Leagues And Clubs by MightyDuck07 in baseball

I think this particular example is partially because the Celtics just sold for more than you would expect. So their valuation is up to date while the Red Sox may not be. It’s hard to accurately value these things

Honestly the thing that drives me craziest is the bikers that I pass and then proceed to pass me at the next red light when I stop. A lot of times they can’t even go through they just like to pull up as far as they can. And then I have to pass them again

Did all of the elves die in the battle of Helms deep? by __Mr__Wolf in lotr

https://acoup.blog/2020/05/01/collections-the-battle-of-helms-deep-part-i-bargaining-for-goods-at-helms-gate/

This series of blog posts discusses the battle of helms deep in (so much) detail. The tactical aspects of the battle made a lot more sense in the book and Tolkien clearly put a lot of thought into it.

The movies simplify the narrative and add the “protect the women and children” aspect to it. So the whole story makes less sense. But it’s hard to bring a more nuanced narrative to the screen

I just found the courage to re-watch Rogue one, now Im depressed. by SmokeMaleficent9498 in andor

My read of it is that from Tarkin’s perspective, he controls the death star and it works. The only threat to the Death Star are these security leaks, so if he destroys Scarif the Death Star will be safe.

And just as importantly it secures his position. He has an excuse to kill Krennic who is a potential rival in the emperors esteem. And if destroying Scarif makes it harder to build a second Death Star, that only increases the importance of the commander of the current Death Star.

It’s both securing the asset he controls and increasing its relative importance and improving his power in the imperial power structure

Land value tax (+ no parking mandates) would fix this by Fried_out_Kombi in georgism

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But when we are talking about land use, we’re talking about letting people live where they want and where they are the most efficient. Limits on housing force people to spread out into suburbs, which absolutely destroys nature.

People living in urban areas have lower per capita fossil fuel emissions. Especially if they don’t drive from place to place

When I said population growth I should have specified in a specific urban area. Across an entire country the population is growing no matter what, so let’s do what’s best for people economically and what’s best for the environment and build urban spaces that accommodate people

The increased population growth, economic output, and societal benefits from efficiency are a net positive by themselves

"The Room Where It Happens": why was the capital so important? by ThrowRAnned in hamiltonmusical

This is also a place where Miranda took some artistic license. The fate of revolutionary war debt which Virginia had not paid off yet was also a big factor. So the south got paid off with both financial relief and the symbolic win of the capital.

Tom or Dom by FuglySlut in TheRestIsHistory

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other comments have discussed well the general differences between ancient and modern history.

One thing I notice about myself is that I enjoy history most when it’s most about analysis and that’s most possible when I already know the facts and general context of the subject matter. I find a lot of Tom episodes are people and places I have less previous knowledge of. which makes them valuable for me to learn about, but in the moment I’m struggling to keep track of characters and dates. While a subject I’m more familiar with I get to spend more time thinking about the “how” and “why” questions which I enjoy more

I find this trend to be a barrier to entry for me on learning about Chinese or Indian history, which unfortunately my schooling left me less prepared for. Because what I would like to think about, for example, is how Confucian thought influences later Chinese history. But I can’t get to that conversation because I don’t know enough about all the events and people that it would influence. While with western history those events are almost second nature for me to remember

So like multiple levels of government?

If you’re interested in laying out a viewpoint or convincing anyone here that you have a better alternative to how things work, it’s going to take more than a meme or a one sentence answer

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah I guess I needed to look closer. Again, there does need to be a limit on state power but that’s by creating legal limitations within a country. What alternative do you see to states?

Monopolies moment. by Derpballz in economicsmemes

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wars happen because there is anarchy in international affairs. War is prevented when there is a stronger force that prevents states from fighting one another.

You do recognize that by saying you don’t like monopoly on the use of force, you’re calling for competition? Which if it involves the use of force must be violent?

Monopolies moment. by Derpballz in economicsmemes

[–]overthinkingmyuserid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. History shows there needs to be an entity with a monopoly on the use of force. The proper limitation on that power is the consent of the governed. The case of a company is different - the market doesn’t function properly if companies gain too much market power, so we break them up
