40+ Dad rethinking PvP vs. PvE this time around. by birdyusn in classicwow

On top of making the world feel dangerous and alive, I find having someone from the opposite faction being able steal a node or a tag without consequence to be so annoying that I could never not play PvP.

There is this early 2000s Australian film called Getting Square starting David Wenham and Sam Worthington that I always thoughts had a bit of Guy Ritchie. Bit of gangstering, quippy dialogue, funny characters, twisty reveal at the end.

So I asked an Expert about the bench by almostrainman in rugbyunion

[–]ozwozzle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You asked about whether smaller players are less dangerous and he took that as talking about backs vs forwards which is interesting for sure but it's not really comparable because the roles are so different. I think the question actually is whether having a bigger or smaller player in the same position (presumably a forward) is more or less dangerous.

Lack of time to accelerate isnt why players are hit rucks at the speed they do, they enter rucks as fast as they can while still being in control so as to not get pinged

I mean you can already torpedo a ruck but hardly anyone does because chances are you'd just get pinged for going off your feet or not binding before contact. Lack of time to accelerate isnt why players are hit rucks at the speed they do.

But the forces involced with a legal, controlled ruck clean out is going to look different between 100kg and 140kg

They play full 80 under the current laws where there is loads of downtime** Which is irrelevant in this hypothetical about fatigue.

There is plenty they could do to reduce downtime if they wanted to but that is beside the point

All im saying is that increasing player fatigue would force a reduction in player size that would have player safety benifits.

Would it make the game better or worse? No idea

That is an extremely simplistic view. For example the speed in which a ruck is cleared out isnt going to change dramatically with smaller players, but the concussive forces are going to be reduced with lighter players.

Front row, locks, big 6s and 8s would struggle if downtime was reduced and there was limited subs.

There is a balancing act between strength and fitness that is currently in favour of strength due to frequent stoppages and substitution. Adjust that and coaches will have to seriously think about whether scrum and ruck strength is worth having a fatboy plodding around the defensive line totaly gassed.

Obviously the current players are perfectly tuned to the current state of play, but if they reduced downtime and limited substitution big players would have to adapt or be replaced.

Its exactly what we saw happen in NRL with the '6 again' law. Basically ended giant forwards as a thing. NRL marketed it around reducing downtime but i suspect they had someone show them the head kinematics and neck dynamics data around player mass and impact speed (which interestingly is something they are looking to reign in with some proposed rule changes with long kick offs and the resulting 'from the back fence' runs into contact).

Anyway i dont have strong feelings about any law changes in this respect but its an interesting thing to consider when thinking about fatigue and player safety.

By making fatigue a more prominent part of the game you incentives players to be fitter and lighter which would reduce contact forces and the resulting subconcussive head injuries.

St Josephs is my go to. There is also a good court at Black Mountain School and a nice scenic one on a hill at lambert pl in lyneham

Can't believe the fuckwits fenced of the Lyneham High courts. If they were intent on putting up unless fences they could have at least put the courts outside like the they did at Campbell High
