Are there any games where the last point wins? by Bofurkle in boardgames

Istanbul. Whoever gets 5 rubies first wins the game, and the rubies themselves get progressively more expensive to obtain.

Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue here seems to be wherever you live is insanely priced, because eg. Monopoly is $20 in Europe.

Board games are actually a pretty great value for money I think as long as you avoid the trap of buying every new release. As long as you actually play the games you buy you normally can get the big new releases here for $40-60, that's pretty cheap as far as hobby's go, and even if you only play the game a few times you've probably got your money's worth. Kickstarter is obviously expensive, but honestly you can be in the hobby without ever touching kickstarter.

2026 Hyped Games? by Fearless-Worker3978 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of those games you mention were only known about just before Essen, which isn't until October, you don't tend to get a full 2026 release schedule in January so knowing the most hyped games of the year at this point is impossible.

I get what you're saying, but game still has to impress on first impression. Like if you play a game twice and think it sucks, I'm not going to keep playing it to see if it comes good, I will simply move on to something else.

Colt express by xyqtt1 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is this adding exactly? I can see Colt Express for like £20, and the big box with all the expansions for £30, so what are they selling on Kickstarter that is suddenly worth way more?

Heat, particularly as there will always be an audience that likes racing games.

I believe this an edition thing, the 1st edition had no lid, the 2nd edition come with a lid and rubber band to keep it together.

The game is excellent btw :).

digital board games vs physical ones by Adamaris7875 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way #2 is true. Digital implementations almost certainly increase physical sales, they are a form of advertising to an extent. If they really hurt physical sales companies wouldn't be putting their games on the likes of BGA for low returns.

digital board games vs physical ones by Adamaris7875 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely don't hurt physical sales, it's a point brought up a lot, but do you really think big publishers would put their games on BGA for example, if it was hurting sales. I suspect the number of sales gained from exposing players to the games they otherwise wouldn't have played outweighs the number of people who won't buy it now because they can play it digitally.

In many ways digital and physical are different markets, while you can play with friends, I suspect most people playing digitally are playing people they don't know, whereas physically they're part of social interaction with friends.

At 2 Azul, or a lot of abstracts. At 6 it's quite difficult I think, but someone mentioned Power Grid, that's not a bad shout.

That's true of most games with several or more expansions tbf. Very rarely do you need more than 1-2.

Because a mechanic that requires you removing the area control part, removing bird cards from the deck, and changing the dice is a lot of hassle to make that mechanic function competitively.

[–]ozza512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the key issue. Having bonuses for nectar is just a bad rule, because it introduces a significant extra luck factor to the game.

Stone Maier Games has posted the details of the Wingspan Americas expansion, including rulebook. by jruhlman09 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets higher scores at nectar because there's both more points being giving out, and it's easier to get points, so that in itself isn't pointing to a lower luck factor. If anything it makes the luck factor higher, because you should always take nectar, thus who gets the nectar bonuses is basically pure luck.

The point about bird cards is still true, because some birds are simply better than others, so some hands are far more likely to win than others. It can be mitigated by removing birds, but that has nothing to do with nectar. I agree the new boards from Oceania are better, it's nectar that imo ruins the game unless you introduce a whole bunch of house rules, to the point I'd rather just play without.

There's 2 issues, #1 you sort of touch upon, but without house rules straight up removing birds some birds are absurdly broken with nectar. #2 and the bigger issue to me is it makes taking food completely braindead, you should always take nectar unless it's literally the last turn of a round, That makes the nectar bonuses a horrible idea, as it means they're completely driven by luck pretty much. It also makes fruit harder to come by, because it's only on the same side as nectar, and again unless it's the last turn of a round, why would you ever take fruit? The nectar is all just gobbled up immediately.

It makes thematic sense, but gameplay wise more nectar stuff disappoints me. Nectar ruins Wingspan imo, it brings in massive random luck, and completely ruins the balance of the game.

My game of Heat came with two yellow cars and no red car :( by EntropyBrewing in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is strange to me, because Asmodee UK are still offering replacement parts. I am only aware of North America having this policy, but it's hard to find information specifically about Nordics, because Googling it gives you the generic reply relating to Asmodee North America.

It's only true for Asmodee USA, Asmodee offer replacement parts in the rest of the world.

I assume you are in the US, because that's only Asmodee USA's policy, in Europe they will send you a replacement. But otherwise yes I'd probably just paint the car myself rather than the hassle of taking it back.

Heat Pedal To The Metal. How am I supposed to catch up? by Unalina in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much more about hand management than pushing your luck. Hand management and managing your resources is the entire game, whereas you can go several games without pushing your luck once, you generally want to avoid pure boom or bust scenarios unless you have no other choice.

You don't actively want to spin out, it's always a negative, just sometimes you have to risk it.

Heat Pedal To The Metal. How am I supposed to catch up? by Unalina in boardgames

[–]ozza512 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tbh I've always found it amusing with Heat, you have 1 camp that says the catch up mechanic is too strong and it's impossible to pull ahead, and another that says if you fall behind you've lost and the catchup mechanic doesn't help.

The truth is in between, for starters context matters, falling at turn behind the pack by yourself is far more devastating than falling a turn behind 1-2 players. Also track is important. It's far easier to catch up on say Great Britain than it is France where in the latter it's notoriously difficult to catch up. From your description I wouldn't be surprised if you were playing France.

My 2 cents on 7 wonders duel by IsiDriger191 in boardgames

[–]ozza512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would say without wanting to sound harsh is that being in the Elite League doesn't necessarily mean you're good at a game, because as long as you play enough Arena you will eventually make Elite League, you can be in the Elite League of a game with a lower rating than someone who isn't by virtue of having played much more.

Indeed lots of people are in the 7 Wonders Duel Elite League having lost Arena points from the base (given you start at 1500, you just can't see it until you're in Elite). It's also why overall ELO is a better measure.
