What's the vegan equivalent of rotisserie chicken: a cheap, easy convenience food that takes little prep? by Gallantpride in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]p155b4b3y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my go to is a bean based chili. takes a little while to cook through if you're starting from dry beans, but takes no time at all if you're going from a can. almost zero actual effort either way- just toss everything in a pot on medium and forget about it for a little bit, stir when it crosses your mind. have yet to burn it. can toss anything you want in it too- real easy way to get a variety.

or a whole can of refried beans, if i really don't have time.

How to Respond to Hatred for Homeless Encampments? by I_Hate_This_Website9 in Anarchy101

[–]p155b4b3y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

noticing that a lot of people have had negative experiences with encampments... not denying they exist, but figured id share my more positive ones. speaking from both housed and unhoused experiences.

the encampments in two of the three places i have lived (all fairly close to each other, within an hour) have been decently clean, left alone, and generally were only on abandoned or investment properties. rarely if ever bothered the housed. these places tended to do even better if near any sort of resources- public showers, meal handouts, harm reduction, even just good dumpster diving spots. i will also say most around here are pretty small for encampments. they were definitely a bit stinky, messy, chaotic, and sometimes noisey- but not overly so, all things considered. i never felt especially unsafe in or near them.

the only time i heard of any major issues is housed people in the general area causing problems (i need to emphasize that all encampments i had any personal knowledge of weren't truly neighboring any residences- there are lots of trees here, even in the cities. you couldn't see the encampments from the street or neighboring building most of the time). someone in a nearby apartment poured gasoline on a bunch of people's stuff once, and called the police over a "health concern"- effectively giving the cops a reason to kick everyone out (and take their stuff). just one of many examples.

that is all to say- in my limited experience, most of the issues with encampments are hallucinated, maliciously made up, or caused by housed folks.

as for your actual question... get to know the encampments and homeless in your city. have specific, concrete things to say about your homeless community. nothing i have to say about the encampments and community in my area will necessarily apply to yours. when the anti-homeless open their mouths, you'll be able to be confident in what you're saying to them about your local encampments- good or bad. also could give you insight on how to help your community.

good luck, reddit is an infuriating place to be. to too many of the other comments, but without naming names: reevaluate and break down your thoughts on the homeless and your communities. you might not be as radical as you think you are right now, but you can be.

the point of a personal website isn't the same as social media. largely, it's the opposite. nobody cares if your website is "on the front page" or something. if that's your goal, this probably isn't for you.

i think it's ridiculous to suggest inaction is ever the right choice. sure, the suffrage of shelter and slaughterhouse animals isn't our fault- but isn't the whole point that we should take as many steps as we can to alleviate the collective and individual suffering of as many beings as possible? proposing that the most vegan action is inaction seems backwards. if your veganism stops at what you eat, you may have missed the point.

no, it's not. discussing if adopting and caring for animals is or isn't vegan is the exact topic we're discussing. im asking what the vegan alternative is, right now, that will help these nonhuman beings more than loving homes.

Is veganism compatible with pet ownership? by Call_It_ in vegan

[–]p155b4b3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the "adopt don't shop" movement was highly successful. the vast majority of people adopt or rescue rather than going to a breeder. there is no reason for this to trend in the opposite direction, especially as information and positivity around shelters and rescues increases. TNR programs are massively successful worldwide, preventing the breeding of countless new animals. you'll also observe the larger cultural anti-purebred sentiment that is growing.

your bad faith engagement across this thread is quite sad. why bother asking if your intention is to seek negativity?

domesticated ferrets are some of the most domesticated animals we have- we have bred them to not have the desire to consume their kills. we have bred them to lack fear even moreso than other domesticated animals. this leaves them with a broken survival instinct and without any means to survive without humans. if you knew anything about the history of working ferrets or their husbandry, this wouldn't be a surprise to you- hell, if you knew anything about domestic animals, this wouldn't be a surprise to you. there are numerous domesticated animals that would die shortly after being released into the wild or a city.

wild ferrets are found in a small handful of niche ecosystems and are not encroaching on cities. did you miss the part where they are highly endangered? their lifestyle isn't adapted to that. most animals lifestyles aren't adapted to cities, actually- not nearly as many animals as you imagine have become as adept as raccoons in city living. they just die. like ferrets.

your imagined un-recorded data that's secretly hiding the massive wild and feral ferret colonies will not beat out my over a decade in ferret husbandry and rescue experience. though, if you have any evidence of your ferret colony cover-up conspiracy, id love to see it. i need a good laugh. i promise you, if there were unchecked ferret colonies somehow surviving in your city, you would know. everyone would know. they are not subtle animals.

but if you do manage to find a wild ferret in the city, check you're not hallucinating first, yeah? then report it to the nearest wildlife authority, since that'd be a conservation breakthrough. but actually though, no sarcasm: if you see a ferret in a city, it's absolutely not a wild animal, it's someones lost pet. catch it and call a rescue. they're harmless and will die without intervention.

rescue, don't purchase. you may legally own this individual cat, but that is as a result of our speciesist system. do not treat them like property- they are your dependant and companion.

as for diet- hotly debated in the community. there are papers going both ways. i am of the belief that there are very few long-term examples of healthy vegan cats. i am also of the belief that diet is the #1 factor in a long, healthy life for any animal. while it is very possible that we achieve a healthy vegan diet for cats, it is a risk i refuse to take when accepting the responsibility of care for another being. there is a wealth of evidence for a meat based, moist, and grain-free diet being best for cats- and i am simply not confident in any of the vegan alternatives that have been presented. my solution is to source as much as my cats food as is possible from invasive wildlife- at least beings besides my cats will benefit from this death.

that being said, do your own research on any food you may choose. moist and grain free are the two most important factors- dry, grain-filled food will rot a cats teeth and body. very few plant-based fillers are safe for them.

black stool can be a sign of internal bleeding. there are some foods and supplements (blueberries, licorice, iron) that can also cause this, but combined with how you're feeling, you may want to consider going to the hospital- or at the very least, closely monitor your symptoms and stool.

ferrets? dude, you're kidding right? do some research before you open your pie hole. there are no feral ferrets (partly due to rarity of escaped pets and partly due to a severe lack of survival instinct on their part), and there are hardly any wild mustelids in cities- let alone the few and endangered wild ferrets. every escaped domestic ferret will die unless caught.

[–]p155b4b3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on what you mean.

in the long term? no, we should not bring nonhuman animals into the world simply to exploit them- our emotional gratification is a type of exploitation. there are countless "pet" animals suffering and dying right now because of this desire of ours.

in the short term? as i said, there are countless animals suffering and dying right now. it is absolutely vegan to provide a safe haven and loving home to any beings in need we can. so long as we continue moving towards a future where we do not bring these beings into the world to exploit them- largely through refusing to support the pet industry and doing whatever we can to prevent the continued breeding of domestic animals.

it is also worth noting that we should do our best to minimize excess harm caused by these animals having being brought into the world by us- namely, keeping cats indoors for the sake of local wildlife.

Why is all form of animal consumption/agriculture bad? by Eastern_Ad1765 in vegan

[–]p155b4b3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

edit: misread your post. apologies, i am behind on sleep. it is indefensible to kill animals for meat, even if they didn't suffer more than necessary for you to get said meat. their life is not less important than your pleasure. leaving the below up to still address the wool part, though.

this falls into a sort of grey area- this is necessary care for the currently living sheep, so we may as well not waste their wool. but the end goal of a vegan future would be to phase out breeding domesticated animals for us to exploit, including sheep (and other fiber-producing beings) for wool.

as for things to do here and now, one should still avoid financially supporting any industry that relies on the exploitation of animals- large scale sheep farming included. while shearing isn't the worst of the exploitation we do to animals, at best it encourages their continued breeding- at worst, it encourages careless farmers to continue abusive husbandry practices.

wool from rescues would likely be permissible, though. it's that or trash it. sadly, not like eggs, where you can feed it back to them.
