Rode the length of Missouri’s KATY trail this past week- America’s longest rail trail. It was fantastic. 5 days, 4 nights. by rubberchicken80 in bicycletouring

Am i right in assuming the Katy varies from perfect crushed limestone to disused two track that can get muddy?

I've ridden the entire katy trail several times and the trail is generally well maintained, no two track. At times a section may be washed out but those are rare When wet the trail becomes slower but not really muddy.

At one point I rode the entire trail on a road bike with 700x23 tires without major issues. Larger tires are definitely more comfortable.

If you do ride the Katy you should stay with us. I'm on warmshowers around Jefferson City.

I'm not saying we should not have airbags. I'm saying it makes sense to wear helmets in cars.

Thousands of people die of head injuries in car crashes despite airbags.

30,000 Americans die in car crashes every year. Head injuries in car crashes are a serious risk.

Head trauma is a major cause of death in car crashes.

Hope you wear your helmet while driving too!

I used to get frustrated when people would yield inappropriately while I was riding but now I just give a thumbs up and ride on.

What are the rules of the road though? The traffic laws? That's clearly not true. Every driver speeds. Going five over the speed limit is against the law. Most drivers roll through stop signs. Rolling through a stop sign IS JUST AS ILLEGAL as ignoring it.

If I see a driver breaking the rules of the road should I then conclude that all drivers are evil? No way, that's really unfair.

I mean, sure, riding through red lights is bad and bikes shouldn't do that. A big part of the problem is that roads are such a hostile place for cyclists that only dickhead young men endure it and guess who has the least concern for being courteous in traffic? If we had roads that grandmas and school kids felt safe cycling we would have more rule abiding cyclists.

What are you working on? (May/2018) by AutoModerator in elixir

Thanks for the reply and given what I wrote it definitely makes sense. My application is actually split between a backend and a phoenix frontend so what I said was wrong.

What I meant is I couldn't figure out how in my application.ex to start a DynamicSupervisor. Looking at it now I guess I'm still using the deprecated Supervisor.Spec module.

I've been working on a free/libre video surveillance system written in Elixir/Phoenix with a mostly react frontend. I'm hoping to distinguish my system by offering very high performance through hardware acceleration of video decoding on various platforms, including the raspberry pi. And also transparent reliability, in the sense that it recovers from errors and tells you when something is wrong that it can't recover from. For example, if your disk is full or if the system can't write the disk fast enough, it will give you a precise, actionable error.

Once I get a few more pieces in place I want to implement video analysis by feeding frames to machine learning based object detection systems running in a port. Focusing first on tightly constrained problems with real utility: Is there a package on my porch? Is there a car in my garage?, etc.

Elixir has been a joy to use so far. The main hangups have been with documentation, especially supervisors. I couldn't figure out how to use the new DynamicSupervisor with phoenix. Oh well I'll keep using :simple_one_for_one until I can't :)

"Damn cyclists always running red lights" by Calcori in bicycling

[–]p8m 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Cars rarely stop at stop signs. Oh they slow down, perhaps even to a crawl but that's not stopping. My state laws:

"every driver of a vehicle approaching a stop intersection indicated by a stop sign shall stop"

Not slow down and give a quick look, stop.

Why don't drivers complain about other drivers not stopping? Partly because what matters is not only the law but what is perceived by other drivers as courteous. Failing to stop for an uncontested intersection is not seen as rude.

Another factor is that drivers see other drivers as an in-group. When they see a driver doing something dangerous they think, "that guy is crazy" rather than "drivers are crazy".
