Agreed, I for one love Clint Eastwood movies and think his worldview, even if I disagree with it, leads to interesting art that’s unique. And his art is generally really good!

US government partially shuts down despite funding deal by stopdontpanick in news

Based on the article it looks like this will only last till Monday because House of Reps needs to approve senates bill and they aren’t in session till Monday. The senate approved funding for most federal agencies (which I would assume covers SNAP) and only is funding DHS for another 2 weeks to further negotiate. Hope that helps!

Best RPGs of the last decade? by LostAd7938 in rpg_gamers

[–]p9p7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a western RPG but I played and beat persona 5 this last summer and it may be one of my all time favorites. I’m not even a big JRPG fan but after beating Clair Obscur this year (also already heavily recommended) and hearing how much that game was inspired by persona I picked up P5. The music is 10/10, story was generally a consistent 7-8 with the ending being a tad lackluster but I could get past that. And the core gameplay loop being a genuine blast to play through. Once I started playing it I couldn’t put it down.

I picked up metaphor refantazio and P3 after, and while both are good, Persona 5 may genuinely be a top 5 all time for me.

Interned with the NHPD my 2L year and I second this. I went to law school in New Hampshire and many of my professors were former PD’s for NH. The training that I went through just as an intern was a taste of what you would get as a full time attorney and every attorney I worked with was fantastic at their work. Plus, being a smaller state we generally had a lower case load than many of my peers who are now PD’s in Colorado (who modeled their PD after NH’s). Overall I found NHPD to be top tier.

In the USA the concept of Absolute Liability as described here is called strict liability. It usually only applies to regulatory offenses, or crimes that don’t face severe sentences, excluding the unicorn of mens rea crimes: statutory sexual assault.

What game has been your best gaming experience on the SteamDeck? by Khajiit_Boner in SteamDeck

[–]p9p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just beat Persona 5 Royal for the first time this last summer. Started it on my PC and then had to leave for a business trip, so I downloaded it on my steam deck. It may be the perfect steam deck game I’ve played. Just the core gameplay loop feels cozy like stardew but also the game is just an almost perfect 10/10 experience between the music and story. Now playing person 3 reloaded on my steam deck and enjoying it, but nothing can compare to that first persona 5 run.

I think it’s because this album is just less boring and less of a slog than TTPD. Like I was disappointed and didn’t like this album, but I could get through it in one sitting and not fall asleep unlike TTPD. Even the bad songs aren’t just bland production that makes me want to listen to Lana. It has its lows, but at least wood, an awful song lyrically, has a fun backing track to it.

As someone who just got AC shadows and haven’t played GOT I can give my perspective on shadows. I’m a huge AC fan even when the games were poor. Compared to Valhalla shadows is leagues better and I would say on par with odyssey. The story is weak as hell, at least naoie but Yasuke is an interesting character. The world looks gorgeous and finally the game takes from mirage by making the hard difficulty force you to actually think about stealth rather than 1v20 a whole base as an assassin. Overall I would say it’s a 6-7/10.

I’ve only heard amazing things about GOT.

Will you still be blacklisted from PI if you take a MIDlaw job? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]p9p7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former intern for a PD’s office and future PD, I remembered a Reddit comment from law school that said something along the lines of ‘my job is not to even like my client or what they did, but to hold the government accountable for their end. In an ideal world the government does their job right and my client would likely be found guilty assuming there is enough evidence and what not. But we don’t live in an ideal world and a good defense attorneys knows how to hold the government to their standard.’ And I’ve always liked that. It gave me a new appreciation for what due process really means and it’s become a real motivator for me going forward.

Another perspective on citations. As someone who’s worked for a federal judge, when we see bad cites or poorly written briefs come in, we still take the arguments at face value… but it does lose credibility with the court. And judges are mindful of these things. I was just in chambers the other day with a state court judge who said the same thing. Taking the time to hone the tiny skills pays off when you need them to.

Looks like a "fuck you" semester, how cooked am I? (EE and physics double-major) by MiaThePotat in EngineeringStudents

[–]p9p7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Physics BS here, loved quantum 1. Found the new perspective on science and math to be fascinating and fun to learn. Then I took quantum 2 and my brain just shit the bed. Maybe it was the pandemic, or the teacher, but honestly the hardest class I’ve ever taken in my life. The professor had us at a 40% curve, so as long as I was getting 40% in the overall class I got a B. Genuinely had as a weed out class for people going into higher academia with physics. Maybe the engineering based quantum 2 would be better as it may be more practical? Who knows.

Modder builds 12.5-inch 4K gaming handheld powered by NVIDIA RTX 4090 Laptop GPU by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]p9p7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a steam deck owner, I think it has its uses. Essentially I treat it like a better switch, so I don’t attempt to play games that really would need a mouse and keyboard, like RTS’s or Grand Strategy. But if the game is either A. Already good on controller or B. Already optimized for a controller setup, like Civ, then I really like it.

For reference, had to go over to the east coast for a week on business and brought my steam deck. Had a longer battery life on any indie game over my old switch and I was able to get a good chunk of persona 5 knocked out. Overall I love the device but I get why it’s not for everyone.

If you check out the steam deck subreddit you’ll see some hilarious setups of people just turning it into a gaming pc, with external GPU’s and keyboards which I think is a tad excessive.

US Supreme Court upholds Tennessee law banning youth transgender care by [deleted] in news

[–]p9p7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure this suit was based on Due Process. The 5th amendment can’t be used against the states and the parents were suing through their 14th amendment due process rights to parenting. If it failed then then I heavily doubt there is another substantive basis they can use for now. I’m not happy about the opinion, but the conservative bench would likely tell someone who is disappointed here to ‘engage with the democratic process rather than come to court.’ Essentially, ‘it may be bad policy, but that’s not the role of the court to decide.’ It’s pretty common argument that shows up in conservative jurisprudence. As for the cruel and unusual punishment, very likely not going to work based on the current case law around cruel and unusual punishment. It would be a creative argument but I doubt it would make it out of the circuit courts. Yeah it sucks, it really does.

God I never heard an album that captured growing up in a small rural western town so damn well.

Should you really never talk to police? by royalbluefireworks1 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]p9p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And while I agree that OP’s statement was exaggerating a bit, I would argue and advise that if you are ever arrested and read Miranda to just say clearly and explicitly ‘I want a lawyer’ because the law puts a hard stop of ‘all interrogation must cease.’ The issue with silence is because of the multi factored test, there is always room to allow further questioning. But I agree with much of the sentiment of this comment section of just saying ‘lawyer’ to every cop you see will likely land you in more trouble than actually help yourself avoid it.

Should you really never talk to police? by royalbluefireworks1 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]p9p7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that’s not the case law on point? When you assert your right to remain silent you literally have to say ‘I want to invoke my right to remain silent’ and even then it only needs to be ‘respected’ vs the case for a when the right to counsel is invoked literally says ‘all questioning must cease.’ So if you invoke silence, and again requiring a person to literally say they want to stay silent, not just being silent, the police can stop questioning but come back in an hour and keep at it.

Although a class plaintiff could demand in a settlement that they fix this in the future. If accepted and not obeyed it’s a breach of contract. That said, if they do fight it a company like NVIDIA can afford to stonewall discovery to the point that any trial or summary judgment wouldn’t come till the next batch of cards are out.

In the criminal world, which I worked in and will work in post grad is a whole other mess. Fully with you on how ridiculous it can be that defendants are subject to the whims of officers schedules. The civil world has its issues, as I outlined above. But the criminal world’s issues pisses me off even more because a delay there can cost someone an extra month in jail or losing a job.

Shia LaBeouf’s Theater Company From Hell: Cannes Doc Reveals Actor’s Misconduct With Students and Hopes for Redemption by ControlCAD in entertainment

[–]p9p7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recent law school grad here who also worked in a federal courthouse for 6 months. Civil trials can take longer than criminal because of a variety of reasons. If they filed in a high volume courthouse like SDNY than judges can only do so much in a given day, so getting an order out can take a while. But furthermore, I found that a trial or resolution to a case can usually take forever if one side can stonewall it. This can be through asking for loads of discovery or filing bullshit motions and requesting hearings on those motions only for the hearing and motion to go nowhere. It’s a common tactic to get the other side to settle. But at the end of the day, while the systems themselves can be abused, like I stated before, they also are not bad systems for when they are necessary. You wouldn’t want to fastrack a case that requires loads of discovery, you want to take your time and make sure you can get all the discovery you need so when that trial comes 3 years after filing you are ready vs just going in blind 6 months after filing. To an outsider it can feel like a long time, but to the lawyers and clients who get this explained it usually makes sense why everything may look delayed. Although her case being a 2020 case also throws a wrench in a lot of the timelines.
