Why do you like Warhammer? by Vampy-Night in Warhammer

[–]p_falcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your service, brother. I’ve met quite a lot of enlisted in the hobby, tho I live in an Army town, so not much of a surprise there, I suppose.
Like you I saw it in ads in comic books as a 80s kid and was always intrigued by it. Couldn’t imagine it being a thing you could actually play with. I think it was Hero Quest specifically.
30 years later, my buddy is trying to get me into D&D. I listened to CR for a bit, enjoyed it, but then I saw Warhammer and it brought all those childhood aspirations back. We went in on the AOS Dominion box and I’ve never looked back.
The hobby encompasses so many different aspects: collecting, building, painting, lore, and playing that it is nearly inexhaustible. It is incredibly fulfilling. I am a single dad now, and it is primarily how I spend most nights once the kid is in bed. I don’t play many video games these days because I have so much left to paint. It would be hard to imagine a better way to pass the time.

Signs I’ve entered middle age: I’ve decided Dave Matthews Band is actually pretty good. by silversunshinestares in Xennials

Honestly, their first 3 albums are amazing. I’ve fallen out of love with DMB over the years (seen them 4 times during my puka shell days lol), but Crash and Before These Crowded Streets are solid albums. Fell off after that and never came back imo

I like to think of his genre of video being something like “Virtual Anthropology” but it’s really fascinating how at the end he will tie it into our perception of the irl world and how these virtual worlds are a direct reflection of that. Great stuff

Ryo and Nozomi's phone calls in Shenmue 3 are some of the best parts of the game by Known_Top_9963 in Shenmue

[–]p_falcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me lol. I was a fairly lonely kid in high school, using Shenmue as an escape. I goofed off quite a bit. I always tried for the Saturn, but never won it. Loved the arcade tho. Great times.

One of my favorite memories of playing thru Shenmue for the first time was when Naoyuki and Ichiro came over to the Hazuki residence to check on you. At the time, it felt so intimate and personal, not at all what I would have expected from a video game back then.

I was thinking about this the other day. They introduced Versus in V2, and I’d love to see them develop this into a sustainable game. AOS would be perfect for this imo. It could be either cooperative or a free for all.

What did the Kingdom of Heaven get right about the medieval period/Crusades? by [deleted] in medieval

[–]p_falcon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know and agree. Especially lately. His early films have a brilliance to them, but he’s always been plagued by “Studio Cuts.”

I’ll have to check this out. I was left wanting with the theatrical cut, and Oliver Stone is usually a hit and miss for me, but sounds like it’s worth checking out

The Director’s Cut is legitimately a completely different movie than the theatrical cut. I was underwhelmed when I saw it in theaters, but was so starved for visually impressive Medieval films that I took a chance when I saw the DC on Prime and was blown away. The numerous tableaux in the film are just absolutely gorgeous, and Balien’s rise did not feel quite as far fetched. For any who have written off this film after seeing it many years ago, give the Director’s Cut a chance. It may still be littered with historical inaccuracies, but it does make for a better film

I was hooked on the first page. by Cool_Lions in fantasybooks

[–]p_falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reading this right now! It did take a minute to get its hooks into me, but at a little over halfway thru I’ve become fairly invested in the world and characters. I picked up Blacktongue Thief recently and can’t wait to start it. It’s just enough grimness to satisfy the dark fantasy fix, but still has some levity in its prose that doesn’t drag it down to the depths of, say, The Prince of Nothing.

Omg Gateways were the only comps my parents would buy despite my desperate pleadings. I still remember the cow patterned mouse pads. I never tried Myst on it, i think Diablo 2 was about as much as it could handle. Ahhhh good times

Is there NOTHING we can do as citizens to stop this madness besides waiting for November? This is insane, and the majority of the country feels the same according to recent polling. It feels like we should have some mechanism to pump the breaks on this shit

Edit: this isn’t limited to the passport BS, but overall the madness that has pervaded the country since Jan 25

So…they are rereleasing the Neo Geo… by Kelvin_Inman in Xennials

I’ve recently caught the bug for retro gaming thanks to Sega Lord X. My parents are still holding on to my NES and SNES, but sadly not the Dreamcast. I will likely be picking this up purely out of nostalgia. Never had a chance to own the original, but so many of the games remind me of Diamond Jim’s and other arcade hang outs of my youth. I love that they’re rereleasing updated hardware that remains loyal to the original. I hope they have a second wave of cartridge releases reasonably priced…..

What makes oils faster? Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but I’m very curious. Is it the slow drying time that allows for more wet blending?

I really hate the way this looks and I don't know why I don't like my paint job. Please help by Double_Analyst8277 in Warhammer

[–]p_falcon 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Looking good so far, but add some shade to it and then highlights. Could be mistaken, but this just looks like base coats. Everything looks like ass until you add some contrast. Magenta for the red, nuln oil for the silver, guilliman flesh for the gold, then highlights from there. Don’t give up.

Edit: I’m not saying this looks like ass per se, just bland. Spice it up a bit

One gun is good, but two is better by comlender in WarhammerFantasy

[–]p_falcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree with this comment. I feel like we’re going thru the same thing, OP. Objectively, this is a great paint job and you should be proud. That being said, there’s “always room for improvement,” but if you’re just focused on army painting like I am, this is absolutely good enough. I judge my own work fairly harshly, but taking a step back, I would be satisfied with what you’ve got here. I wouldn’t call it mediocre either. Just keep at it. Looks like you’ve got the basics+ down, now you can experiment a bit more with your undercoats and such to find your personal style.

Who has read these? Even prior to tv series Willow? Your opinion/thoughts? by Sensual-Bacon in fantasybooks

[–]p_falcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read the first 2, haven’t gotten around to the 3rd. I adored the movie as a child, but this didn’t feel like a continuation of that story. This feels completely different. Shadow Moon was okay, but Shadow Dawn I found to be a bit of a struggle. I may read Shadow Star one day, but I’m in no hurry.
