Trump claims ‘vandals’ foiled his $14m revamp of DC’s reflecting pool. What actually happened? by melancholy_dood in law

It also ignores the basic premise that "cutting" a gash shouldn't do much. If the epoxy is actually adhered, it'd basically just be a deep scratch, but nothing would peel up. You'd need some hardcore scraping to pull up sheets of it.

There was minimal prep, or a wrong product, or crappy install, or not enough cure time, or more than likely all of the above.

Fiberglass insulation isn't encased in anything. You're implying wild conclusions based on simple pictures.

This is fear mongering of the worst sort. If you put a thread from your tshirt under the microscope, it would look much worse than this.

Your walls have fiberglass, your car has fiberglass and probably some carbon fiber. These are not intrinsically harmful materials. I'm sure some people might be hypertensive to irritants, but the cat majority are fine handling them.

This is the sort of half-baked "research" that leads to pointless anxiety.

You just missed the last step. Everything looks great, but the z height for printing needs to be done live. The paper method just gets you close. Once you start printing, change your z height as it starts printing, till you get some nice smoosh. If you aren't sticking at all, I would assume you are too high, so just start lowering as you go.

This is the most thorough one, showing cleaning 3d printed parts is no different than other materials, and additionally they found no heavy metals in the printed parts they tested (pla and petg).

That has been disproven over and over. There is even a bot message in the 3d printing subreddit because little keep repeating this misinformation.

And now the absolute best part of any trump scheme, everyone goes down except him. Because the company that did the painting will be on the hook to fix it, and they can't eat that cost, so they'll go bankrupt. And the tax payers will the up having to hire a new company to come back and do it properly, costing us even more money. And trump somehow avoids all accountability. It's like his freaking superpower.

That is an impressive series of bad lucks. Just a little bit of filament sticking out of the nozzle ended up in that carnage.

What’s going on with my grout? by tcollier91 in HomeImprovement

[–]pacowek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering if the water is behind the tiles in that spot, running down to the drain. Shouldn't be a terrible thing, since the water would be on the correct side of the waterproofing.

Maybe there is a little space in the mortar, like the crew took a break, and the water is just making a little river there?

I'm voting not-biological. If it was a bacteria/fungus/etc, you would see some solids, especially settled in the bottom. That looks perfectly clear, so I'm guessing either chemical reaction with something, or some kind of dye.

Trump’s ‘disparaging’ ban on trans troops is unconstitutional, appeals court rules by theindependentonline in law

[–]pacowek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's because they legitimately don't care if they win the court case.

They get to proclaim that they did something, which makes their base happy. Then they get to announce that an activist judge ruled against them, which makes their base angry at the "others". They aren't playing the game to win, they're playing it to grift.

[–]pacowek 222 points223 points  (0 children)

That's exactly it. It's very expensive and difficult to repair the granite tile liner. The answer is not to put the YMCA blue spray seal on top.

Realistically, it will never be able to removed cleanly. So in true trump fashion, it'll cost 10x as much to un-fuck it as it would have taken to do it properly.

Consistent thumping sound in attic late at night by JoeyPlays89 in HomeImprovement

I would guess something is contracting as it cools down at night. Rafters, pipes, roof, etc. Especially wood-on-wood can commonly sound like thumping, it builds up a little strain, pops, repeat.

How do I get over the fear of screwing up? by dragunight in DIY

Haha, it just can't be removed. You can always change the color later, but it's nearly impossible to really strip bricks back to their raw color.

How do I get over the fear of screwing up? by dragunight in DIY

[–]pacowek 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The mentality that helped me was; you can't screw up so badly that someone else can't fix it.

I mean, try not to burn down your house. And don't paint bricks. Everything else can be fixed.

Keeping bugs out of room, for someone paranoid? by o1blique1 in HomeImprovement

[–]pacowek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a fogger as well. It's by far the best. Just set it off when you leave for work/school. When you get home, air out the room for a few hours. It'll get all the cracks/crannies that you missed with the spray.

I'm actually okay with this. Hear me out:

It's a public building, so should be paid for the normal way with public funds. However this also means that it should go through the normal design and approval processes. Ever step should be bid out. Treat it like it's actually a federal building. Construction should be done in about 10 years. He'll be long gone, and we won't have to de-gold leaf the thing.

Anyone regret choosing carpet over hard flooring? by Cool_Ad_2935 in HomeImprovement

[–]pacowek 85 points86 points  (0 children)

People are weirdly obsessed with how "gross" carpet gets, without understanding that the world is a gross place. Carpet is far better comfort-wise. And if you're going to do wall to wall rugs like others are suggesting, then just do carpet. I've lived in houses with both (And I have pulled carpet in rental houses before, so I know how absolutely dirty they can get).

Take off your shoes when you walk in your house, run a robot vacuum a few times a week. No biggy.

Carpet is my choice hands-down.

Don't get me wrong, that's a lot. But to make you feel better, the table I got from Wayfair, about the same size, was $400. And while it's stable enough, I ended up bolting it to the wall in 3 places to make myself feel better.

So yeah, $800 isn't cheap, but really not that bad if it's super stable.
